Depends upon whether you get to check it out/see/test it beforehand.

IMHO, I wouldn't waste my $ on Gen3, so get the best you can afford, even if you must wait and save.

Depends upon the quality of the NV, ambient light, IR illumination, many other environmental and equipment factors

I highly recommend you educate yourself on these NV forums.

Re: how good is night vision ....

Oops, that was a typo, I meant to say don't waste your $ on Gen2. I'll edit my original response so it reads correctly now.

I agree with Chris that I wouldn't buy anything less than Gen3.

Friends don't let friends buy Gen2 or other NV crap.

Sorry for the confusion! Happens when I type too quickly without proofreading.

Re: how good is night vision ....

Like anything else in this game that requires a decision; figure out what you want to do with the gear or what problem the gear will solve for you.

I have both binocular and monocular NV, (both G3) and both allow me to "see" in the dark, duh. For my use (thinning feral hogs on my ranch), either works fine, although I don't use the rifle mount (monocular) that much because I walk, ATV, or truck around to different locations in rough terrain and all of those activities or tough with a shoulder weapon up to your face.

If you can, get out and try some NV locally until you figure out what satisfies your needs/wants.

Re: how good is night vision ....

The best acuity you can hope for from Gen3 is 20/35 to 20/40.

The tubes used for light amplification deteriorate from the day they're built, and decay faster while under use, so buying used you get the double-whammy.

If you're serious about NODs, I'd suggest you go over to AR-15.com and browse their night vision info. One of their member/sponsors is a guy named Victor di Cosola (screen name Victor) who is the Brian Litz of NODs. Victor runs Tactical Night Vision and his products get universally glowing remarks from other ar-15.com members which, if anything, is an even tougher audience than Sniper's Hide. Victor also cherrypicks components and builds Gen2 NODS that rival Gen3 performance for ~2/3rds the cost of Gen3. With the possible exception of TNV's hotrodded Gen2's, I have to concur with what's already been said about them. And for Allah's god's sake, don't even think about Gen1.

Re: how good is night vision ....

kylongshot, I'm guessing that's you who posted a similar question at the Predator Master's forum. Victor also posts there.

For hunting use, a much cheaper solution might be a visible light laser illuminator, like this one. It's a flashlight that mounts along side your scope and shines an intense and concentrated laser that will illuminate a target at several hundred yards distance brightly enough that you can target it with a regular "daylight" scope. It's a fairly new technology and still has a few kinks, mostly related to temperature, but I've read good things about Laser Genetic's dealing with customer problems, and their quality does appear to be moving in a positive direction.

Two potential problems: The first is the light spooking the game. I've only seen very scattered accounts that it does, which left me thinking that either those guys were looking for something to carp about or all the rest were only shooting paper targets with theirs. The other problem is locating the target. Imagine trying to locate a 'yote at 200 yards in the daylight if you were only looking through a 9x scope. That's not a lot of field of view, but any NV scope of the same magnification will have the exact same problem. An NV scope might help you shoot it, but it might not be a lot of help in finding it. Same goes for the laser illuminator.

Anyway, for $600 vs $3500, it's worth a look.

Re: how good is night vision ....

i did post on predatormasters, just trying to get a idea on whats good enough for me, i cant justify the raptor, i cant pay 6000+ for a scope.Ive looked at used models but i dont wanna buy one and it be messed up or only work a week

Re: how good is night vision ....

You can save yourself a lot of money and not much if any performance drop off by going with one of the 740 / 760 scopes vs the Raptor.

Contact Victor he'll set you straight.

Night vision is pretty good. Shot this raccoon at 400 yards with 60% moon, with the aid of a PVS27, just an example.
