How is 7PRC better than 7 Rem Mag?

FWIW, the next gen 7mm bullets are unreal.

I ran the numbers a while back for a 180 ELDM at 2500fps, thinking about my lowly 7x57. Crazy.

Almost made me want to take off the handy little 2-7 Monarch off of my 6-1/2lb Ruger 1A and mount something with knobs and a Christmas tree.😂

Only about 1/2 joking…..it’s a 8.5” twist…….plenty of throat…..no mag constraints…..I’ll shut up now.

That means I’m wrong. Still seems strange to make that change for almost no difference. To me it seemed the first article was being vague intentionally and just throwing 300 PRC in there to push it to the public

300 RUM problem is mag feeding with the heavies.
Difference could be cost to manufacture.

It doesn’t matter if 300NM is slightly better, as long as 300 PRC meets the threshold and objective requirements, and is cheaper.

I have zero insight into this specific procurement though.

Pretty much already said, but in a nut shell, a shorter & fatter case design is better than a longer & skinnier one.
- A shorter & fatter powder column can burn more efficiently (with the correct powder)
- A shorter case design allows the use of longer bullets without the OAL drawbacks of a longer case

Someone is always trying to build a better "mouse trap", but many of those new designs will not really offer anything better over the original design, it will just be another way of accomplishing the same outcome. IMHO, there is real measurable difference with the newer shorter & fatter designs versus the older longer & skinnier designs.

Yeah, the 180 ELD-M is unmatched up to the 285 .338 in that lienup

It has almost identical BC to the 375 cal 350 gr SMK that was all the rage 10-15 years ago.

Truly incredible bullet

I think y’all are forgetting that the powders, because of shortage, had to change. I believe Hornady was loading the heavy 7 with RL26, which no longer exists. RL26 would push the 175 another 100fps over H100 pretty easily.

I have no idea what Hornady uses, but VV N565 is readily available and gives basically identical velocities as RL26. It is also less temp sensitive. For my money it's a better powder all around for chasing max velocity.

Mmmm, powder became less available to the public because the majority of it was going to gov’t contracts and ammo mfg’s. I’d bet they could still get 26 or their blend of it if they wanted. Don’t forget that either. They are not constrained to the same powders you and I are,

Just from QuickLoad, but in terms of velocity, pressure and case fill, R26 gets the highest velocity for the lowest pressure & case fill by a pretty significant margin on a wide range of cartridges.

Being old school, (you remember, where we were taught that 2+2=4) i have to say this in defense of the 7mm Remington Magnum and the .300 Winchester Magnum. (This same goes for the .375 H&H in Africa.) They may be more than a bit long in the tooth, but they are and remain top and very popular hunting rounds. That said, out in the boonies, and you need rounds for your rifle, the local gas station will probably have a box or two. Maybe not your preferred brand but it will be something you can shoot and save your Hunt!

Might need a 7PRC or a 300 whatever the next time I reach out for the maximum ranges at Arena in Blakely, Georgia, but until then, I’ll probably stick to my GT. (Being old school, if I was going to build a 2000 yard rifle, I’d probably have it chambered in a long throat, 6.5x300 Weatherby Wright Magnum. ).

In my words, “Hunt” is the key word, your uses may vary.

I agree with the first half. 6.5 anything is not the answer for 2k
