In light of the Ammo threads we have had I figured I’d make one for magazines. I already know AJs answer. Haha. No you can only carry so many but how many do you have for replacements, use, rainy day etc.

A few boxes. I don't even know how many I have. Bought a lot of GI mags at about $5/ea a long time ago. Still in boxes most of em.
Something needs to occupy the top shelf of the shelving units for ammo, parts, and components.
Last week I dug out a seldom used double AR case and found about 30 AR mags I didnt know I had. And some G19 mags.
    I was happy.

They add to my toxic masculinity. With a beard, a pocket knife, always opening doors for my lady...... having a job I go to every day.....
    Living the life I love.

    BMA! BMM!

Only 7 lol! Got to have spares and rainy day stash tho. Come on Veer!

Yeah. Load somebody else down with it.

    Maybe consider going belt-fed?

Yeah, but it comes with it's own unique problems. Finding out that large box of what you thought were double blue tip incendiary projectiles was actually just another box of links all along isn't quite as interesting. But ten thousand of those fuckers do go a long way... Yeah, I'm the guy that bought up all the M9 BMG links a few years back from that one vendor. I'll be loading and linking until I die and probably won't be making a second purchase.

As for mags, I used to keep 'em stuffed in 100rd. BMG ammo cans... Until those started becoming magazines themselves! Lately I've been dumping all the mid size cans and loading 'em into 40mm cans, which consequently are also 200rd. mags. Can't use the 200rd. cans with the tripod though so I don't load as many. I really depend on govt. auctions going my way with this, but lately I've had to pull cans out of my ass.

You can stuff damn near fifty mags in one 40mm can and still have the lid fit. That's nice if you ever plan on having to store 'em loaded. Wanna say 44 fit but I was awful fucking tired and I think I miscounted it on second thought. Anyway, it's more than the BMG cans, they hold 30 GI mags or 25 Magpul mags. So I guess I have 150 or more 5.56 and another 60+ Grendel. Bags of Glock mags. Random numbers of other assorted one offs.

One 200rd standard capacity magazine, which ironically cost less than a 30rd magazine most days:

Along those lines, I haven't bought AR/M16 mags since November 2012. I might want to get a jumpstart on the next Congress. Are the Brownells metal mags worth their salt?

I got a can or two of those. They're every bit as good as the green followers and milspec enough for the army. There are some with the brown follower but different floorplates that don't say Brownells. They're pretty much the same.

How many magazines is enough is a commonly discussed topic. Presuming a person isn't collecting magazines to use for sale or barter, here is my answer. In the short term, I would have as many magazines as needed for a normal "load out" for each weapon, and about 25% of that many in reserve in case of loss, breakdown, or when magazines begin to malfunction. That way, there are enough magazines to rotate use, and replace magazines as needed.

For long term (as in magazines will never again become available) I would think at least twice the amount in paragraph one, but really, the sky is the limit. It is akin to asking how much ammo, how many bandages, how much food and water, etc. The basic answer is as much/many as possible.

    Loaded? Lessee....
4 on each of two plate carriers, two on a belt, 6 in a 10 speed bandolier, 6 in a patrol pack and 8 in four double mag setups stashed in strategic areas and one beta mag just because. So that's about 30 not including the beta mag. Another 60 in backup storage. I need more, obviously.
Does the 50 mags for my FAL count?

    5 per rifle minimum.

@powdahound76, absolutely makes my day finding good shit I forgot I had. Makes the wife call me a hoarder. I am good with that ;):giggle:
I went looking for magazines one day and found a 50 cal can full to the top with 5.56 that I had forgotten about. :D

I have over 100 AR mags. Not all are 30 rnds. I have quite a few 20 rnds as well.

A couple hundred for barter. All metal no plastic.
In the past I was much more of a Magpul mag fan. They are still really good if stored full with the caps on. But for long term loading durability without caps, I have been leaning toward mags with steel feed lips. I have a few stainless steel HK AR mags that have basically been loaded for 12 years now, they haven't spread or cracked yet.

    I like the metal ones.
Im not a big AR guy, just like the idea of a metal mag in the rifle.
I am quickly becoming an AR guy with classes and lots of practice.

I have a lot of Magpul in the plastic wrapper for barter material or use if needed.

    Got to have 20’s.

Have a precision AR shooting prone? Or in a tight spot?
A bunch of my 20 rds are Colt mags. Work just dandy.
Probably worth something to a collector as they are way old.
Worth having good mags to me!
Put a ten rounder in my HSG slick on the side of my plate carrier . Figure if I gotta eat dirt that'll help .

I've got a half dozen ten rounders only cuz that's what's legal in Commifornia. Fortunately, the beta mag sits somewhere between the ten and twenty rounders in depth. 100 rounds of "hello, will you be my friend?"
