How many diff bullets do you shoot?

Today I was wondering how I wanted to stock my ammo supplies and got to thinking. Do I really need more than 2 different bullet types?

I'm building my AR10 and its going to be a target and hunting gun. I pretty much already have committed to 175 grain bullets for target shooting(1k rounds already and I haven't even gotten the barrel in yet) and 180 grain round nose bullets loaded to sub sonic for the suppressor hunting

Should I consider lighter bullets for plinking/target or is that just a waist of my time?

Re: How many diff bullets do you shoot?

I shoot one bullet per caliber.

77gr SMK for 5.56mm
175gr SMK for 0.308
124gr FMJ for 9mm (might switch to 147gr, but not until supplies run dry)

Re: How many diff bullets do you shoot?

When something new comes out like the Barnes X bullets or something like that I will experiment. Basically I keep one for hunting and usually one for paper. 2 rifles I have short range paper and long range paper. The same bullet style does not always lend itself to being accurate at both ends of the spectrum.

Re: How many diff bullets do you shoot?

I keep several flavors of things. My AR15 likes 69 Hornady's, 75 Hornadys but not 75 Amax's. My 223 bolt loves 75 Amax's.

I also shoot 55 FMJs through it quite a bit.

I shoot only 40 Vmax through my 204 Ruger except for the rare occasion where someone wants to see what a fast rifle round does to a waterbottle. For that reason I have a box of 26 Varmint Grenades on the shelf.

6.5's I shoot 123 Amax, 130 JLK for the 260 upper, 140 Amax and 140 Berger, 140 JLK for the 6.5-06

7mm/270 (and soon the 7/300 WSM) I shoot 120 Sierra SSP's for close range varmints, 162 Amax for most longer range and 180 Berger Hybrids for the really long range stuff and long matches. I use the 162 Amax and 139 SST for hunting bullets in the 7/270 and the 7 SAUM respectively since the 7 SAUM is a factory model 7 with a 2.855 max length mag.

30-06 I have experimented with everything from 110 RN's and 110 Vmax through 208 Amax. I have bits and pieces of those tests left, but 95% of the rounds are either 150 FMJ's that are surplus for "plinking" and 208 Amax fro LR work.

I have several different kinds of bullets for everything but mostly I keep buying Hornady Amax and Vmax bullets, now some Bergers. Hornady's are so much more affordable than Berger that I mostly shoot the red box instead of the yellow.

Re: How many diff bullets do you shoot?

Guess I'm in good company with Chris and Niles.

.223- 40 & 50 gr. Nosler bt, 55gr.fmj, mostly 69smk, 70 gr. Berger, 77smk, 80smk.
6mm- 87 gr. V-max, 105 a-max, 105 Nosler cc, 105 & 108 Berger, 105 lapua.
308- 147 fmj, 155 smk (both 2155 & 2156), 155 scenar, 175 smk, 185 Berger LR BT.

Re: How many diff bullets do you shoot?

One bullet guy here. 175 SMK's for everything .308. The 175's are good out to a 1000.

The only reason to have another bullet would be for a hunting scenario. The original poster is right on with his choices. No need to complicate things with a 'plinking' bullet.

+1, except I use the 175smk for hunting too. works great for every thing I hit with it.

300wsm either a 190 smk or a 200 smk.

.223 either a 75 Amax or a 52 Amax.(for magazine feed)

308
6.5 carcano, 6.5 jap, 6.5 X55
7mm Mauser
8mm Kurz
8mm Lebel
8mm Mauser

45 Colt
380 ACP

3 in 223

Re: How many diff bullets do you shoot?

well for .308 use, i use a 125grain nosler ballistic tip for deer from a 16" featherweight stick and 175grain smk's for going long.(ballistic tips really only open up out to around 600 yards or id use heavy ones for long range.)

Re: How many diff bullets do you shoot?

DocHoliday13,

Imho i would get another rifle for plinking, AR in 223 cheaper to run.
This would also be a good excuse to get another rifle

If $$ aren't a problem use the 175's for plinking also, practice makes perfect.

I've got 3 rifles where i double up on bullets.
6mm Rem, 87 vmax for rabbits and foxes and 95 sst for goats and pigs.
HS precision 308 155smk for f/class and 165 for hunting.
AW 308 175smk for target, 178 amax for hunting.

I still experiment with different bullets just to see how they perform.

Albert.

I even take it one step further and try to find a load that works in more than one rifle as long as there is not to much of a compromise in accuracy.

Re: How many diff bullets do you shoot?

I stock bullets in my reloading room in .198", .224", .243", .251", .257", .265", .277", .284", .308", .311", .323", .338", .355", .357", .400", .429", .452", and .458".

Lately I have been shooting:
a) ruminants with .277" 130 gr Nos Ballistic tip
b) targets with .243" 65 gr Vmax
c) rodents with .224" 33 gr Vmax
d) concealed carrying .355" 90 gr Gold Dot.

Re: How many diff bullets do you shoot?

Well... let's see: at one bullet per shot that would mean I shoot thousands of different bullets.

Serously, though, initially it's fun to play around and try the heaviest bullet that the rifle will shoot well, but in the end I settle on one or two good similar bullet/load combinations for the purpose of the rifle and stick with them. That's the only way to really get to know the performance envelope of the system.

Its more about where I spend it and not how much I dump. haha

I have a 223 and I literally only shoot one bullet weight with it. 55 grain. I might be getting into a second weight, maybe 69's, when I build a service rifle.

My 6.8SPC however I shoot 5 different bullets. I'm trying to figure out if I wanna trim that down to like 2 or 3.

It gets confusing when you start shooting more than 2 bullets haha

Re: How many diff bullets do you shoot?

I have been shooting a 6.8 spc for two years. I have settled on the 90 grain sierra flat base hp. In my gun it shoots three and five round groups in the same hole, or all touching at 100 yds.. At 200 it drops almost none. I use h-322 powder at 29.4 grains. My ar.15 has a sixteen inch ss barrel , 4-14 power scope. I shoot two 150 lb. white tail with it one shoot apiece at 100 yds. last winter. They did not move one more step. I have tryed all the other types of bullets and they were not as consistently accurate. Thanks George

Yall save me a seat!!! Some people reload to shoot, sometimes I find myself shooting just to reload!!! I do eventually find a good load for a rifle and stock up. My favorite is a 22-250 I have that I found the sweet spot for the Hornady Vmax and the Barnes TSX..... I got lucky I guess, but I don't have to change my dope a bit to shoot either one. Deer or varmints, take your pick, point and shoot!!! (then go load some more!!)
