I currently have a SPS tac in .223. When I shoot this barrel out I would like to replace it with a 1-7 or 1-8 to shoot the 80 to 90 grain bullets. What am I looking at cost wise to get a new barrel installed on my rifle. What other cost go with buying a new barrel.

Here is my brake down
-$350 for a good barrel blank
-$____ Instillation?
-$____ chambering the barrel ?

I just do not know the process of changing a barrel and the cost involved. If someone could enlighten me I would greatly appreciate it. Also if there is a better Idea for a caliber conversion please tell. I like the .223 because it is a little bit cheeper to reload for and I still get sub MOA out of it. My range is only 300 yards FWIW.

Chamber/install $250-350. True action $100-200.

Depends on who does the work.

Have you tried the 77Sierra match Kings in your rifle? I have seen a few of these shoot very well with the 77 and Benchmark powder.

I charge:

$200 to fit a std barrel
$250 for fluted

"Fitting" includes:

Turn/thread tennon, chamber to a dimension of "GO+.002" on the headspace, cut to length, crown to your specs (choice of 11* tgt crown or recessed 11* hunter crown) Spin polish, CNC engrave the cartridge,

Add $30 to blast finish (bead blast)

Add $75 for a threaded muzzle
Add $125 to fit a brake (labor only)

Tuning up a Remmy 700 is $200 + a $55 lug that's pinned to the receiver.


FWIW I use CNC equipment almost exclusively in my shop. The actions are trued on a VMC and the barrel work is done with a very nice slant bed turning center.

Both machines do a hell of a good job.

If you decide to have your action trued, have Chad do it, you will not be sorry. I have felt the barrel to action fit on one that he had in his shop and it is VERY nice. Chad does top notch work.

I won't answer for Chad, but I assume it is because you have to time the barrel so that the flutes end up where you want them both for aesthetics and to accommodate any lettering on the barrel.

Regular barrels are generally timed so the high side is at 12 o'clock.Fluted barrels are generally timed as close to 12 o'clock as possible and so the flute
is actually centered at 12 o'clock.

ALL barrels will have a curve or arch to them. Generally the high end of the "run out" will be indexed at 12o'clock to shoot inline with the bore ... Not left or right per say. If not indexed you will have to add windage as you go out in distance. Not the best explanation but maybe you can get the picture.

I guess what Tunanut is saying is that if you have plans for a re-barrel for February 2012, start now.

I did not know that about barrels having a "high side". So, if a rifle has "excessive" headspace (won't close on a no-go, but has plenty of room on a "go", can that barrel (speaking Savage here) be turned a hair a quarter so that the "high side" is either up or down? Just curious...

Actually when the question about "the high side" was answered, one, I understood exactly what he was saying but one of the first things that came to mind was a video of a truing and rebarreling job where "the high side" of barrel was never mentioned. The action was trued, bolt worked over, barrel threaded and chambered, barrel installed checking headspace and never any mention of the high side of the barrel. So it did make me wonder how this high side was kept to the top while at the same time the headspace was being set properly. Are headspace adjustments made inside the chamber or by adjusting the barrel tenon length. I'm guessing this may depend on which way the headspace is off. I will think on this for a while and see if I can figure it out.

It's machined into the shoulder of the barrel in relation to the chamber / boltface. This is the advantage of the Savage. The nut acts as the shoulder and headspace can be adjusted without machine work. Also, this doesn't mean you can install a Savage barrel in whatever orientation you choose. A quarter turn goes a LONG way as far as headspace.
