How much of the lands

Re: How much of the lands

Some bullets like JLKs and Berger VLDs like to be jammed into the lands for best accuracy. Others like SMKs and even Scenars can stand a jump of .010-.020". Manuals like to tell you .015-.030" off the lands.

It's up to your stick to tell you what's best, so invest in the Hornady/Stoney Point OAL gage and modified cases for the calibers you shoot.

Report back when you have some bona fide intel.

If you are a beginner to handloading, stick with something close to factory length. If you have several years of handloading under your belt, go out to the lands and start back in .005" increments. This is best done after working up an accurate load for said rifle.

From my experience, in most factory barrels/chambers, the throats are so long the magazine length is the primary factor that limits the OAL. Unless you want to single load.
