I have a DPMS .308 that I am trying to decide how to scope it. I want something that is all around out to 800 with good capabilities up close as well. I know, it's a tall order.

I was thinking of having a RDS and a tactical scope both in Larue mounts and switching them back and forth. How repeatable would that be? Would I see shifts of 1 MOA etc?

Thanks

Re: How Repeatable are Larue mounts

I switch between a 1-4x24 SWFA SS HD and an Aimpoint T-1 both on LaRue mounts and haven't had noticeable deviation when switching optics. Just make sure you put them in the same spot every time (I mount my scope up against the BUIS and the Aimpoint all the way forward on the receiver).

I would expect somewhere right around 1 MOA being acceptable from a Larue mount. Understand that this has been a touchy subject in the past and the resulting thread got a bunch of people banned.

The guy fired three ten-shot groups removing a LaRue-mounted ACOG after every shot. All three ten-shot groups were less than 1 MOA. </div></div>

That's pretty darn good,

I think there was a sticky over on ar15.com about the accuracy and repeatability of larue mounts... (Under the Larue section of course).

Re: How Repeatable are Larue mounts

In my experience, LaRue should be repeatable certainly within 1 moa, and likely 0.5 moa.

Slightly off topic, but Bobro mounts have been slightly better for me, usually ~0.25 moa.

Re: How Repeatable are Larue mounts

I recently got an IOR 3.5-18x50 and put it in a LaRue mount. Next time I am out shooting I will shoot a couple of 10-shot groups at 300 yards and then shoot a couple more 10-shot groups at 300 yards removing the optic between each shot. I will report back in a new thread and we can see what there is to see. It may be a few weeks or even months, though. New baby=less shooting.

Re: How Repeatable are Larue mounts

I've done extensive testing with LaRue mounts and they always seem to repeat within 1 MOA, more like 1/2 MOA as stated above. I also agree that Bobro mounts are excellent.

+1. Just did this "experiment" a couple of weeks ago and had about a 3/4 MOA shift after popping a scope on and off. Don't recommend doing it before a match...

Re: How Repeatable are Larue mounts

I sent my rifle for repair and get a new bolt assembly and chamber work, but kept the same barrel. Remounted my scope with Larue mounts after more than 5 months and shot it at 100 yards. It was only off by 0.25 moa elevated and windage.

Re: How Repeatable are Larue mounts

800 yards is pretty far out.
1 moa repetability means that you will thereticly be able to put your bullet within 8" on 800 yards provided that you do everything else right.....
But of course you are not doing everything else right as nooone are able to do that.
So in reality you are giving up quite a bit of your accuracy and hitpotential.

I really like QD scopemounts, and many of my hunting rifles have it, but they are intended for much shorter distances and are not picatinny based.
So with your high demands of accuracy I firmly belives that you not should have a QD mount, regardless of name.

Frank made a pretty good video review of Back up optical sight a year ago or so, please have a look on it. I think he had a lots of points there.

Re: How Repeatable are Larue mounts

I have a few for my LaRue upper. I like them quite a bit. I used to switch back and forth very often and never noticed any change in POI. This is an AR15 and not a match gun, it is capable of 3/4 MOA or a bit better, so the POI shift would be less noticeable.

Re: How Repeatable are Larue mounts

have my eotech on a larue QD and my vortex pst on another larue. interchanging both between a 16" midlenght keep zero between range visits.
plus, who else is giving away all the goodies larue does when you buy their stuff?

Re: How Repeatable are Larue mounts

side by side a Bobro spanks a Larue mount. It was designed to come back into zero and hold chest plate accuracy. I have tested a Bobro on my AE to 525 and took the scope on and off, repeated hits at 525 on video.
