I was just given a 16 inch 5.56 barrel and was told that it was a match barrel. Is there any way to tell this? It is a 1 in 9 twist and it is not chrome lined. It also requires a screw on gas block and not the pin type.
Without knowing the manufacturer of the barrel its hard to say. Is it stainless or Cro-moly? If its stainless then I would assume its one of "match" grade.
Keep in mind that the term "match" is used VERY loosely nowadays, but if it shoots roughly MOA or less, then I guess it's a "match" barrel and shouldn't really matter what brand/make it is.
I don't think I would worry about it to much if I was given it. Just see how it shoots, and decide for yourself. That's what I would do, if I found myself lucky enough to be given gun parts.
Being lapped is a very good clue but just because it's lapped doesn't mean it will shoot for crap. Anyone with a lathe(preferably with a spider) can do a light shake test to determine how straight the bore is, then check the chamber runout and concentricity with a range rod and the threads for concentricity.
If the bore looks like a banana during the light shake test, sell it.
