I am trying to decide if I really need a Kestral or do I just want one. I have a WeatherFlow that connects to my smart phone. I do not compete but shoot alot. I reload and am serious about trying to be accurate out to 1000 yds.

I had the weather flow with the ballistic arc app. Suited me just fine for a few years. I’ve since then gotten a 5700 Elite, and it is super handy having it all in one unit and not having to juggle a meter and the phone. Once you learn the interface it really does streamline some things. However, if you’re not competing you might not reap the benefits quite as much. If you have all the other useful gear though and have the $ burning a hole in your pocket then I’d say go for it, but if there is any other shooting stuff you want to upgrade, or even take a class somewhere, you might see that dollar go a little further.
Especially if you’re shooting at the same ranges most of the time. Once you get out there and realize the kestrel is telling you the same data as your current setup, you might wonder what you spent the money on. Especially if you could use a nicer scope, bipod, new barrel, reloading supplies, etc.
But of course they are super handy and now that I have one I wouldn’t want to not have it!

I personally don’t like using my phone in some of the environments I shoot in and prefer an all in one device.

Get one of the 5700 Sportsman models from CLNY for $250 then if you see the need to upgrade to the Elite you can do that for $190.

Once you have your gun data input and saved, is quick and easy to use or do you have to go through a lot of men screens?
Also do you have to use the Applied Ballistics software or can you use the Hornady 4DOF.

I’ve got two kestrels because two is one, one is none. Unless you have your dope memorized for every range, altitude, and wind condition you are likely to encounter, you need a ballistic computer and weather station. If any part of your current system takes a dump, you’re done. I’d get a kestrel with ballistics and keep the phone/Weatherflow setup with me as backup.

Or you could use the Weatherflow/phone to build hard copy data cards for all likely conditions as backup and use that money elsewhere.

My advice, get the sportsman model from @gr8fuldoug. It’s an easy firmware update in the future and it is now a 5700 elite.
