I have a remington 700 5r in .308. only put a few rounds through it (don't have much time to get out). I noticed that the bolt is pretty tight. After watching some videos in the training section and hearing how smooth the bolts run, I started wondering how to get mine like that. any suggestions?

Re: How to make my bolt run smoother

Combine grease and flitz (or just flitz) or auto polishing compound and smear on the bolt surfaces. Replace the bolt in the rifle.
Cycle fully.
Repeat.
Put it in your lap.
Do it watching TV.
Lub it and do it some more.
The gun I mean.

Separate the steel from the stock.
Wash out the polishing compound (DW-40 should work).
Grease your bolt lightly, not forgetting the lug backs.
I learnededed this last part from Roscoe:

Do not over-lubricate the bolt body. Lube may gravitate onto the round in the magazine.

Be careful about getting auto polishing compound around the bolt locking lugs and cycling too much as you can change the headspace if you lap the bolt lugs. It is better to get a commercial raceway lapping tool from Brownells and use this to smooth up the bolt raceway. This way you don't mess with the headspace.

I think that what Chad Dixon said in another thread about lapping lugs and with concern to head space pretty much sums it up.

<span style="text-decoration: underline"><span style="font-style: italic">Y</span>our</span> thinking brought you to ask the question:
How to make my bolt run smoother?
Then you got answers.
Then you implied; "...nah, screw you guys...I think I need to....."

Oh brother!

Know how many rounds it'll take to make the bolt run smoother? 500, 1000? Have fun.
