How to make trg-22 lighter?

I have difficulty shouldering my trg-22, due to have multiple shoulder and hand surgeries and of course age. I would like to shoot it in tactical matches for fun. I know I can get a shorter lighter barrel.

Any other suggestions?

That's about it, plus get a lighter scope/rings. You can't shave weight off the action really. I guess you could remove the stock skins and have someone mill out the aluminum chassis, but that could weaken it if not done correctly.

flute the barrel and bolt

aluminum rings and aluminum base if anyone even makes one

dont use a brake

use harris bipod instead of the sako bipod

drill weight reducing holes in the chassis and stock...do at your own risk, lol

I do plan to remove the brake. I have an atlas bipod which I think is pretty light.

The fastest weight reduction is to cut the barrel. I have 2 TRG's, 1 with. 26" and 1 20" .......the short barrel is NOTICEBLY lighter, and easier to handle. Next up would be picking the lightest scope and mounting solution you can handle. I've been looking at the Spuhr mount, and it may end up being a bit lighter than my existing steel picatinny rail and rings. Some scopes anre also MUCH heavier than others.....start looking at the spec charts......

Did you ever weigh them? I'd be really curious to know how much weight you lose going from 26" to 20".

Re: How to make trg-22 lighter?

Realistically, it's not a rifle designed to be shouldered. It's made to shoot off a rest or from a non-offhand shooting position.

I've shot mine offhand at schools and during stress courses. I can shoot about one minute of softball with it offhand. I'd never deploy it that way. Too much risk. The lesson is that I need to shoot it from a rest. I can do ok in sitting or kneeling, any position where I can get a good knee/elbow/thigh, etc. weld.

But offhand... it's the wrong rifle for the job.

Now if I were a Finnish Paratrooper and capable of bench-pressing a Volvo... that might be different. But I am human. Wrong rifle for offhand.

PS, the only way I can make hits offhand is to 'time' the dancing of the crosshairs in the scope. I've made some good shots at schools, but they have been all about luck. Here is a picture at a school in March. Not pretty, but I hit the bull.

For short range, off-hand hunting in thick cover, I cut a 26" barrel back to 20" and use a Fastfire III red-dot sight instead of my NF NXS. That's a huge weight saving and it's lightning fast to shoulder and aim.

That's why my hunting rifle is a Sako Finnbear in .270... And the TRG is only used as a duty rifle. Different applications, different tools for the job.

Finnbear is not quite as accurate as the TRG... but more than adequate for any game.

Your TRG will do the job hunting... And now I can see why you would want to lighten it. But for the cost and trouble of lightening the TRG (and the risk of affecting its accuracy), you could have a really nice Finnbear!

Then you'd have two dead nuts accurate Sako's!

Regardless, post some pictures of your lightened TRG. I love to see what people do to them, because there is a lot of creativity and innovation in the TRG crowd here.
