Rifle Scopes How to mount a scope besides using duct tape?

Having only previously shot pistols in the past, I have never scoped a weapon before. Therefore I know what I don't know and need to ask those who have knowledge.

I recently purchased a Sig R716 with 18" barrel. My typical use will be 100 to 600 yards targets, hunting unlikely. After reading a lot of discussions on the forum here, I have decided to buy a Vortex Viper HST to mount on the 716. It appears to be the best choice for my maximum budget.

The question is now on to selecting the best mount for the rifle and scope. One piece mount or scope rings? Elevated or lowest profile that fits? Quick release or not? As far as quick release goes, I don't expect to take the scope off the rifle unless I have to. One manufacturer better or worse than others?

Thanks for any advice that you can provide.

Do you have a front sight post. That may be the most limiting factor for you. You may have to get a riser to clear it. If no front sight post I would go with lowest rings possible for making the best cheek weld. Just my 2 cents worth.

While a fixed front sight assembly may cause blurriness, it's won't be an end all-be all. Anyone who's used an ACOG on a M4/M16 can tell you it's a touch annoying but not a hindrance.

I prefer non-QD one piece mounts for ARs. You won't need too much if any cantilever since it's on a large frame, but it doesn't hurt provided you're not going to extremes. Go with 20moa cant to get the most out of the scope. For height, stay in the 1.2-1.3" ballpark or you will hate the cheek weld. Nightforce and Badger Ordnance are my two preferred non-QD mounts for ARs. They're a bit pricy for some, but they work VERY well. Thank you Redmanss. Your summary response was just what I was looking for. I had forgot to ask about cant but I had read enough on the forum to understand that it would help at distance by biasing the scope by 20 MOA.

2 problems, 1: if you are above about 3 power the front sight post will make no difference, you will never notice it and no reason to clear it, that would be ridiculously tall. 2: because of the flat top design of an ar you can not go with the lowest mountable rings for your scope as your scope will be too low for you to see through it. Find rings setup for xtra high or Co witness height for an ar platform. Those will almost always still clear the bell of even a 50mm objective and give you the same cheek weld and height of standard iron sights

If you're able to bring your rifle into a store, try to compare different ring heights with your scope to see what affords you the best cheek weld. Sometimes you have to sell one set of rings at a loss to get the right size.
