Here is a question for the pros out there.

Recently I lost vision in my right eye and doctors are saying it is permanent. Ugghh.. I love to shoot and have many many rifles with nice optics that I can no longer shoot :-(.

Well I know I have to learn to shoot differently as I was right handed/right eye dominant but accomplished shooter in the past.

I have figured out from my AR15 with EOTECH that I can tilt my head a bit and lay my cheek on top of the stock some and still shoot very accurately right handed even though it is fairly a strange position..

MY QUESTION

My rifle setups are mostly Millet Bases / Burris signature (High) Rings sitting on a Remington 700 rifle. I have at least 6 of this setup and is the most common. However due to my new condition I can barely see through the scope and the scopes need to be raised about 1/2 inch for a comfortble fit. After checking standard sales rings/bases I cant seem to find the answer. Extra high is only .1 additional height and I need .5

Any Ideas? Custom Height Bases seems like the best Idea but where to get them?

I would certainly appreciate any ideas.. I am getting desperate.

Thanks

One Eyed Shooter!!!

A custom picatinny base or picatinny base with a picatinny riser would be the simplest and one of the stronger methods of raising the scope. Going with taller rings is not the best as it cantilevers the load.

Apel manufactures "crossover" scopemounts so you have your scope in front of your left eye, but shoting with your right shoulder.
I would have a look on that, alternatively start shooting with the left side.

Re: How to raise scope height efficiently.

I was blind for 4 months in my right eye several years ago after an injury, so I feel for you.

I would start lots of dry fire practice and train myself to use my left side, it won't take as long as you think.

It may surprise you, as to your accuracy, as now you can train out many bad habits learned and potentially shoot better than ever.

Re: How to raise scope height efficiently.

My Dad shoots right handed with his left eye from all of his rifles. There are several ways to skin this cat, you just have to look around and see what fits you best. Some of his are just elevated scopes, others are sidemounts and open sights on lever guns, and some he's adjusted the angles of the stocks to get a lower hold. All depends on what you're most comfortable with.

Re: How to raise scope height efficiently.

I am starting to find that 1/2 might be more than needed for a comfortable hold with my cheek on the stock. I think for the most part 1/4 to 3/8 will do it. I have looed at some options with custom bases.. i am hesitant to spend a bunch until i know for sure that it is permanent. I am thing millet angle lok extra high, however i will have to change bases out.. All good ideas from you guys.. I'd like to someone making a standard base a bit taller that i could still use my burris signatures. That would be the ultimate. I really don't want to use 1 piece bases if I don't have to on a bolt gun.

FYI: I did obtain a pictanny 1/2 riser for my AR and Perfect!!!!
Could actually be a bit lower but at least I have a rifle that I can shoot for my PIG HUNT next week!!

Re: How to raise scope height efficiently.

There's also nothing wrong with high rings and a permanent cant in the rifle and an equal-but-opposite cant to the scope. The net effect will be the scope will just be high and left of the bore. I know someone with a cataract in the right eye and he shoots very well like this. The cant is set the same for all of his rifles and if something like 20 degrees left of vertical.

Re: How to raise scope height efficiently.

I have the same problem. Detached retina in my r eye. Had surgery and can't see well now 20/200. I just shoot lefty on my righty bolt action. The only issue is off hand shooting. I have to drop my l hand under the rifle to cycle the bolt. Gets really close to yer face. Shooting supported is a must.

Re: How to raise scope height efficiently.

i'd just shoot lefthanded with your left eye, i know some guys who are right handed left eye dominant , it doesnt really work.

you could even do something stupid , like hold the trigger/grip with your right hand, and put the buttstock into your left shoulder , then you'd still have the same trigger control , feel weird sure, i dont reccomend it, but how else would you shoot an AR with A2 sights with your condition ? either lefthanded or what i just suggested.

Re: How to raise scope height efficiently.

I would borrow a one piece mount designed for AR-15s and see if that does the trick. The LaRue SPR is one example at ~1.5" to 1.6" above the rail, although non forward mount varieties and even higher mounts are available depending on the manufacturer and models. ADM, Bobro, and NF are other makers with good reputations.

It could be hard (depending on your age, etc), but some people have been able to switch to the left side.

Re: How to raise scope height efficiently.

I would think it would be easier and safer to just train left handed...

Schools everywhere have some sort of training for the weak side, no reason you can't make the weak stronger!
