Fieldcraft How to remove Krylon from AICS?

Re: How to remove Krylon from AICS?

I use this to soak off Krylon overnight. Took off three coats of Krylon/Rustoleum, but left the original McMillan painted finish intact.

It can attack unprotected aluminum.

+1

Just hose it down again with your base color and start over. That's the beauty of a Krylon job.

Re: How to remove Krylon from AICS?

Well, I didn't lay down a base. Used my FDE skins to my advantage. Wife just bought some stuff that takes it all off. Gonna start from scratch.

Re: How to remove Krylon from AICS?

Okay, the stuff blows ass and didn't take one chip off. Damn it. What do I use to remove the paint? This is why I suck, I am OCD hard, and don't have one smidgen of painting skill. Guess I could hit it with flat tan, and go from there..

DEET( the stuff found in most bug sprays) Off Deep Woods is what we used in both Iraq and Afghanistan on our M4s. Each weapon looked brand new. It takes some work but was well worth it.

Re: How to remove Krylon from AICS?

Citristrip is what you need.

Low fumes and the paint will wipe right off, I stripped my AICS in about an hour. No need to let is soak. It's so easy, you'll never worry about getting krylon off again. You'll need a bunch of old t-shirts and maybe a couple old toothbrushes. I like to paint a lot of my gear and when I get tired of it, it's really easy to get off.

Re: How to remove Krylon from AICS?

Krylon is lacquer. (I belive Rustolium is an enamel) Krylon can be removed with Lacquer thinner, but I would test that it doesn't disolve anything you don't want it to just to be sure. In my experiance ( I'm a cabinetmaker) plastic is impervious to lacquer thinner. If you decide to respray, each new coat of lacquer will melt into/bond with the previous coats. As far as lacquer thinner goes I use the stuff all the time for clean-up of paints and stickers, etc. The only thing I've found so far that it doesn't remove is blood.

I've used spraypaint/krylon on a bunch of my scopes and Citristrip takes off the paint in just a few minutes, it really easy.

Just be sure to keep it off your lenses-- Citristrip will f-up the coating on the glass.

Hey Jebre- One warning- I've only stripped NightForce and Leupolds with it so far. If the finish is anodized aluminum you'll be fine but if it's a lower end scope that has plastic or a different finish, you should do a test patch.

Re: How to remove Krylon from AICS?

If that stuff doesn't work try O'reilly brand brake cleaner. That is what I always use to strip off Krylon, you don't even have to wipe it. Just spray it on and the paint comes right off with it.

Re: How to remove Krylon from AICS?

Rob,
I use it on everything except the glass on your optics, and I haven't had any damage. It might damage a recoil pad,but i'm not sure as I usually just take mine off of my Mcmillan.

Re: How to remove Krylon from AICS?

Citristrip. Didn't hurt the skins one iota. Took all the clear coat, and paint off. Get the gel, apply it with a paint brush, let it sit for about 20 minutes, and use a paintbrush to work the paint off, then wipe with a t-shirt. Very simple.
