I was having a discussion with some guys, one who definitely has lefty leanings. The question came up about photo ID for the elections. We have that here in Virginia. The lefty, kept bringing up that having ID reduces the voter turn out amongst black and Hispanic voters. He came up with some statistics to support his claim. I do believe they are at least partly accurate. After the conversation ended I continued to ponder the question. This is my line of thought.
-The elections are (one of?) our most cherished and important means to ensuring the smooth transition and continuation of government and our freedom.
-This country was founded and built by primarily northern European settlers. English, Irish, German (I have people from all those), Swedes, Italian, in the southwest, to some lesser degree Hispanic. Those groups set up the system. Blacks were wrongly imprisoned and brought here. That was wrong, but its history now. they did contribute but mostly in the early stages as labor, not to doctrine.
-While we have serious problems with our country, contributed to by both sides, Id certainly rather live and participate in this system than any other in Latin America, and surely Africa. Most of the democratic countries in Latin America were fashioned after our system.
-We surely need to secure the electoral process. Every effort should be made to be all inclusive. If that means reaching out to the minorities, to insure they have valid proof of citizenship, then we need to invest the energy to insure that, and to insure they are comfortable in using it, and not feeling intimidated.
That all said, I propose the following.
-Photo Id AND Social Security ID required at the voting stations. Every citizen should have these anyway and be assured of no intimidation. If for some reason they need assistance to the voting p[lace because of age, infirmity, or financial reasons, that should be provided.
-This one Im less sure of, but perhaps, thumb print.
Anyone convicted of violations, cheating, or any attempt to throw or illegally influence the election, is guilty of treason and sentenced to life in prison at hard labor.
Thoughts?
