How to Ship Loaded Ammo?

Guys,
I done a little research on how to ship loaded ammo. Looks like taking it to a UPS service center is the best way, I was just wondering if there is an extra Hazmat fee like when you ship bottles of power?

All I ever do is bring the box with the ORM-D stick on the box and the diamond label. They open the box to look inside then seal it back up, but I have never shipped just powder it has always been ammo itself.

No extra haz mat fee. Must bring it to a UPS hub and not a UPS store. Print and put on the label below and you are set. I usually put two or three on the box.

I no longer ship ammo since I no longer travel by air. The last I shipped ammo was in 2002.

When I did, I simply took home a few empty cardboard commercial ammo boxes/cases from my LGS, which already have all the necessary markings, and usually are just about the right dimensions.

I'd pack my ammo in commercial ammo boxes, pack the boxes into the commercial case, then seal and carry to my local UPS store.

I have shipped ammo lots of times. All I ever do is hand write in black sharpie marker
ORM-D on the box and that satisfies my UPS requisite.

UPS stores found in the strip malls and other similar places cannot/will not
be able to handle your ammo shipping needs. Nor will your Hardware Hank
who also does UPS. As mentioned above in this thread, to use UPS as your
ammo shipper, you must go to the UPS hub that services your area.
When I do go to the hub, the workers there are very friendly and helpful.
As Rob stated, there are no HAZ mat charges for shipping loaded ammo.
It ships the same as any other commodity, no extra fees... You are just
required to declare it as ORM-D

I package the ammunition in boxes like you buy the ammo, NO LOOSE AMMO that could have ANYTHING impact the primers.

I put foam padding or foam peanuts around this box and use a STURDY outer box. I like to use AMMO CANS and then wrap them in cardboard.

Shake the package. There should be NO SOUND coming from anything moving in there. If there sounds like ammo rattling around, you are a NO GO - Recycle this station & do over.

I put two of the ORM-D black & white diamonds on the outer packaging.

Then weigh the whole shebang.

Place my shipping labels. Even if I use self adhesive labels, I secure the edges with tape. I don't like lost packages.

I have an account with UPS and I schedule the UPS guy to come by my house and pick up the package containing ammo. Doesn't cost ANYTHING extra.

I don't like going down to the UPS hub & waiting in line.




That's just what I do and have learned it all one way or another.

Yes there are ways to scrimp & cut some corners - but - it just MIGHT come back to bite you, sometimes SOONER than you think.

Not to drift the thread too much, but the "UPS Store" near me (strip mall outfit run by bumpkins) won't even allow you to ship a scope from their location. I tried to ship a scope a couple of weeks ago and they said anything that can "go on a firearm" is a no-go. Ridiculous policy!

I'm going to look into FedEx's regs and will use them going forward if they're any more shooter friendly than UPS.

UPS itself is fine. I ship ammo, scopes, rifles and pistols through them. It's the UPS Stores that suck.

I always put the diamond and the other sticker because our UPS facility either has people who don't know wtf is going on, or just make stuff as they go.

1. They will only tell you if the box is labeled correctly, and they are not allowed to tell you what stickers have to be on the box. (This straight from their mouth not mine)
2. I have shipped before with just the diamond, and shipped before with just the ORM, and have been denied when one or the other was missing.

I asked a few ammo places I buy from awhile back and was told by a few as long as one of them is on there it is fine. If you notice boxes from say Speer, or Remington they just have the diamond on them. My UPS driver seems to know more than the people at the facility he told me just make sure it has the diamond on it, and set it for pickup and you won't have to bother with them anymore.
