I finally got my rifle. I can't wait to go to the range bright and early tomorrow morning. I'll post 100yrd and 200yrd results.

I have two rounds to try out:

150 grain and a 180 grain. I went with Federal rounds to get it zeroed. Might get some match grade later.

Pics of the rifle and scope will be up in a few minutes.

Rifle:

Howa model 1500
.308
Factory stock. (will be replaced with a Hogue next week)

Optics:

Burris XTR
3-12x50mm
Illuminated Retical

Pretty decent choice of rifle and optics. I'd avoid the Hogue stock and go straight to a Manners though. That would make a much better choice to get into this game for you.

Looks great. I have been thinking about getting a Howa also. Just what model is the problem. I was thinking about the Carbon supreme which wears a Christensen Arms barrel or the heavy barrel varmint model. Then get one of Pete Lincolns chasis that uses the AI skins

good point,
I started a very small part time composite stock production starting with a howa SA. Took me a quarter year to shape a stock until I was happy, then I had to find a left hander for his advice. The adjustments made for the "left-hander" didn't affect the right hand handling. Once a mold is made it's difficult to change.

If one changes from a laminate then rather straight to a good composite. Although a pillar bedded laminate will shoot very well normally.

Rifle looks great! I would go with a Manners stock too. A Manners T4 with a couple of studs will run about $420.00. The T4A with Adj Cheek Piece will run around $620. I am having a new rifle built, and I went with the Manners T4A. Anyhow, it looks like you have a nice and accurate rifle.

+1 it might snow tonight. Our first of the season...

Although, on second thought, I'd pass on the 96 degrees. That's a little too hot for me.

Nice looking rifle. You need to practice a little though.

Lol, trust me, I am going to. Gotta get more ammo, and next weekend I'll be back out there. I need to improve my positioning and trigger pull. I know that has a lot to do with my shot placement.

The excitement of shooting my new rifle was getting to me. I'll calm down next trip out.

Re: Howa 1500 (.308) Finally arrived. (w/ pics)

I'm hoping someone here will have some advice on how I can improve my performance. Here are the results from my last trip to the range.

1st Group of the day
.308 Howa 1500
Federal 180 grain

2nd group

+1. You can't expect match grade groups without match grade ammo.

Re: Howa 1500 (.308) Finally arrived. (w/ pics)

In my Rem 5R (best rifle I ever purchased for the money)
Federal 175 SMK make me look good (all touch)
Federal 168 SGK make me look good (in your ear at 300yds)
Federal 150 FMJ still make me look better then you (1-2 inch)

I have no idea on the 180 you are shooting but the 150 although not very good are a lot better then what you are showing. The 150 are very consistent with no fliers. Just not that tight of group.

Step one like mentioned above is get the best ammo you can and work backwards to find the cheapest that still shoots.

If after getting better ammo and still no luck...
Verify the shooter skills. Can you shoot another rifle better then this? Got a buddy that shoots better then this? Gun clubs are a friendly bunch. Walk the line and find someone that knows what he is doing and ask for a little help.
I would clean the rifle, let someone else shoot from a cold start.

Re: Howa 1500 (.308) Finally arrived. (w/ pics)

This response is long overdue. Since I've purchased this rifle system, I've perfected shooting with it.

I use Federal 150 Vital Shok (blue box) when hunting.
I also use Rem. Core Lokt 150 grn. when hunting.

Both rounds perform almost exactly the same. I have been able to send rounds accurately down range up to 400 yrds (farthest I've tried to shoot)

I'm very happy with this gun and scope.
