Howa M1500 308 + Manners stock = Good idea? Bad idea?

I have an opportunity to get a howa 308 varmint rifle on the cheap, the rifle shoots well/low round count but the stock is junk. I saw that Manners makes a stock for it in a style that I like...my thinking is put the two together and shoot it til the barrel falls off, then re-barrel. Good idea? Bad idea? I know nothing about Howa actions whatsoever btw, only rem...

Is putting a Manners stock on anything ever a bad idea? As for the howa: flat bottom action with integral recoil lug, one piece bolt, most seem to be pretty close to true from the factory. Pretty sweet action if you ask me.

There's nothing wrong with the Howa action and there is "enough" aftermarket to get everything you need. However there isn't the limitless number of choices that are available to M700/clones.

Good luck wearing out the hammer forged barrel. I have a Manners TA short action and T3 long. Worth every dime. Should you choose to upgrade the trigger go with the new 2 stage from Howa thru Legacy.

Absolutely a great idea. I love my Howa/Manners build. Make sure you get an adjustable cheekpiece with your stock from the get-go. IMO it is absolutely necessary on a 1500 with a 20 MOA base. I bought a Manners MCS-T and quickly found out I should have bought a -TA. After trying the Karsten system and never fully liking it, I am now modding the stock myself with a thumbwheel adjuster from Master Class Stocks.

Thanks for the input. Basically I want a general purpose 308 to fill the hole left now that I don't have my LTR anymore, but I want it 22-24" and bedded in a good stock. I was thinking this style manners stock:

I already have a bipod and am getting an optic soon. Goal is to be less than 1200 in the rifle itself.

As said above... a great starting point for a custom build... Wear that barrel out and then go for your life!!

That's the stock I have. Just looking at that rig, I know the comb of the stock is too low for me. I must have high cheekbones. I again strongly advise getting your Manners MCS-T with an adjustable comb (MCS-TA). Even if you don't need it, it will pay off in resale if you ever part with it.

+1 to everything said above. the Howa's are fantastic actions, and Manners are a good idea for everything. I have a MCM A5 on my 1500, but I'm thinkin about switching to the MCS TF4-A so that I don't have to drop the cheek piece every time I remove the bolt.

I'm going the EXACT same route as you with the 308. Howa and Manners stock. What are your other specs? Scope,rail,rings etc

Howa action(great) plus Manners Stock(great) equals one bad ass awesome rig. There is the math equation you were having trouble with. Don't worry, I'm pretty f*€king good at math.

I have a spare leupold M3 I'll be using but eventually I'd like a razor or F1, maybe an HDMR. I'd like it to be something I can use down at sac valley 600/1000 without spending a ton of money or ending up with a 20lb rig.

I have an old Weatherby Vanguard(Howa action), love it. Buy the rifle. I don't think you will be disappointed.

+1 ... I've got vanguard 308 with manners T4-A (Thank you Stocky's for keeping inventory and Manners fantastic customer service is absolutely without equal!) and it's only made the setup even better... Pics below as well as groups.

With any amount of luck, it will be one of the best rifles you'll ever own. Post back on your decision.
