I have a Howa 7mm rem mag I am wanting to have built on. I picked the gun up for little of nothing.

All my local smiths say they don't work with howas or weatherby vangaurds. If the price isn't outragious I have a 308 I want to do the same thing to.
Anyone know where I can get the work done?

I am wanting to go with a heavy barrel no break.

Also do you know what it costs in comparison to a Remington or mauser action?

Re: Howa Rebarrel Who Does It?

should be same price as remingto/winchester. call the boys at benchmark barrels they will get it done for you and their barrels flat out shoot.

ask for ron or barry

you won't regret it.

Re: Howa Rebarrel Who Does It?

Howa/Vanguard uses metric thread pitch in the receiver, and in the U.S. the majority of the lathes in use are set up with u.s. customary pitched gearing etc. so it becomes cost prohibitive for a smith tooled up for standard threading to retool for one metric job...unless someone has a lathe dedicated to metric work its almost always gonna run extra..

Re: Howa Rebarrel Who Does It?

Thanks guys. I am talking to Mark Gordon here on the forums about doing a couple for me. He had one posted that looked great.
Seems he is going to try to rethread the action to standard remington threads so that I can use standard thread barrels.
I can't wait to have this thing built.

Re: Howa Rebarrel Who Does It?

Come on! It aint rocket surgery. Most lathes will cut standard or metric threads so that can't be the issue. Metric threads may be a little tricky to do on a lathe that was designed for standard threads, but if you figure out the procedure and replicate it each time your good to go! Lets not over think this.

Re: Howa Rebarrel Who Does It?

I'm a closet Howa fan,but a 700 will always get you more and for less. Logistics shouldn't be overlooked towards the finish Line, just because you score a cheap donor...if only because the donor is the cheapest part of the equation.

700 stocks and barrels abound, for those wanting to stretch a buck and really ring the bell.

Re: Howa Rebarrel Who Does It?

There are plenty of parts for the howa and there are people that work on them. Mark Gordon is working on my Howa now. When looking for parts for the howa i found that the stocks, triggers, muzzle breaks, bottom metal, etc. are basically the same price as the remington. The labor prices are the same for bedding, lapping, installing muzzle breaks, cerakoteing and so on. I have not rebarreled my howa yet but i dont expect a problem or any more of an expense than when i had my remington rebarreled, or not enough to matter.

my howa shot really well right out of the box. the action is smooth. no issues with feeding and so on.

the howa is a good value and there are plenty of parts for them and people to work on them. is there as much stuff for the howa as there is for a remington, not yet.

Re: Howa Rebarrel Who Does It?

Pretty easy to score a used McMillan 700 handle, for a great savings.

Working on a Howa is no thing, though logistics certainly are.

Re: Howa Rebarrel Who Does It?

I have 3 McMillan rifles, 4 model 700's that I have built, 2 m77's Ruger and several other custome action rifles.

I am wanting to do it just to say I have one. I appreciate the Howa rifles. They are cheap and made well.

Money is not a problems I just want to get it done.

Re: Howa Rebarrel Who Does It?

I understand what you are saying msdeer. i have other rifles. i wanted a new rifle, not used, i couldnt find a good reason to spend more on the remington.

the howa is inexpensive, rather than cheap.

Re: Howa Rebarrel Who Does It?

Howa is much bang for the buck, out of the gate. I'm far less giddy in their regard, when talking a build.

I happen to have more than one rifle myself, should that put your mind at ease.

Re: Howa Rebarrel Who Does It?

Nah I wasn't jumping you or anything.
I know its much easier to build on a Remington or Savage action by a long shot.
I just want a howa action custom rifle.
I don't know why. The thought has been brewing in my head for a while now.
I have one Howa that shot better out of the box than one of my custom guns.
If they would do away with the damn metric threads it would be great, but being a Jap company I don't really ever see that happening. I see the other manufactures going metric before I see Howa going SAE.

Re: Howa Rebarrel Who Does It?

I'd be dubious of any Gun Plumber who couldn't barrel a Howa,if only for starters.

I'll greedily take a twin lugged Howa over a MK V and a host of others, but you'll not whip a 700 at it's own game.

Re: Howa Rebarrel Who Does It?

ALl the smiths around here are old timers withough metric geared machines.
I have actually thought about taking a smith class and buying me a lathe and mill so I could do all my own work.
I figure I could get all the machinery for around $10K.
