Just received my HS Precision 2000 HTR in 308WIN.

First: Crown is quite nice. Polished and has every indication of being centered.

Bolt is square and true according to my test indicator.

Action is, of course, the tried and true HS-P 2000SA. Which is a slightly modified clone of the Remington 700/40-X.

Interestingly, there is no finish on the scope mount screws - highlighting the very nicely cut threads on stainless steel action.

Barrel, the heart of any precision rifle, is the HS-P 10X in stainless steel, 26 inches long and sporting 6 deep flutes. Personally, I'm not the biggest advocate of fluting, but it's a signature of the HS-P people so it is only fitting that it be on this rifle. As a side note, the 10X barrel has been on of the nicest in my opinion. Wonderfully smooth (easy to clean) and very uniform. They are the equal of anything from Hart, Shilen, PacNor and the rest. I'd buy them exclusively for my precision rifles if they were more available.

The bottom metal is quite nice, though not of steel. The magazine is the standard HS-P drop mag and has quite a bit of success behind it. Hidden behind it is the soul of every rifle: the trigger. This one is wonderfully crisp and set precisely at 2.25lbs (my scale shows a 0.9oz variation in break).

And the paperwork:

My favorite part:

And the acoustically measured "Proof" group.

Thoughts: Well, its a $3000 rifle. It's got some high expectations as a result. Can you do as well by modifying a Remy? Well, yes and no. You can true up the 700 and sleeve the bolt. Install a 40-x trigger or tune the existing, and so on. And it will shoot every bit as well. It wont hold its value as well (rifles for some reason dont hold value well regardless) though. To accuracy: 0.5MOA, even a 3 round 0.5MOA group is quite good. Custom precision rifle makers not withstanding, a solid 0.5MOA gun is a very well built gun. Much is made of the supposedly 0.25MOA guns - I've seen them and shot them. They were all dedicated benchrest guns. Every one of them used match prep'ed brass, loaded on (mostly) Wilson hand dies. And an action glued into the stock. And was shot from a $400+ bench rest system. With talcum powder on the sandbags to help the rifle recoil consistently on the bags. With a 40x + power custom scope. And so on. So is it worth $3k? To me, yes. I couldnt be happier with it!

AMEN

There ya go. Who care what anyone else thinks is the best rifle. Get the rifle YOU want. You will be way happier in the long run.

Nice HTR. These are sweet shooting rifles to be sure.

And under rated in the current market IMHO. C'est la vie.

Nothing against the rest though - have a buddy with a M-24 from GP. FANTASTIC workmanship.

Re: HS-Precision HTR in 308W

Nice gun, I have a few of HS Precisions barrels on my guns. My favorite being the .338 RUM. I also own a few stocks but have been disappointed in the finish chipping off very easily. I see you have the same problem in pic #4 around the bolt that I have had on multiple 700Ps. Oh well, shoot the piss out of it and you won't care about the acne.

Well nuts! I hadnt noticed that freckle until now. A call to HS tomorrow will see what may be done.

I love My 338LM HTR after building others I like the customs. I wouldnt say more or better... I am so happy with mine its on the second barrel.

You will find that its smooth accurate and comfertable.

Re: HS-Precision HTR in 308W

Oh yeah, Josh is great. This is actually HS # 3. There is a 223 HTR on this site, and a Pro Hunter Takedown in 7mm Rem Mag that isnt.

I love them.

I'll call Josh tomorrow.

Cheers!

Re: HS-Precision HTR in 308W

Spoke with HS-P. The invited me to send the stock back for replacement. Which I will do, after it gets used a bit more. Very good CS.

Took her out last night - 100 rounds to break the barrel in. A solid 0.5MOA gun. Smallest group (5 shot) was 0.26", largest was 0.53 inches at 100 yrds. Load used was 45g Varget over a 155.5g Berger Palma. Cant ask for much more than that! Brass was Hornady Match, prep'ed (neck uniformed, weight sorted, etc).

Scope used: Vector 6-24x MILRAD. Overall, nice setup.

Re: HS-Precision HTR in 308W

I love my HTR in 300WM I bought when I got back from Afghanistan back in 2005. I have had very good customer service from HSP. They are always very helpful when I call to ask questions or to order accessories. I recently upgraded to the newer style bottom metal. I think some of the major improvements over a typical Remington, besides the tighter tolerances are the 3 position safety, magazine system and integral barrel lug. The barrels are second to none. My rifle has exceeded my expectations. I would trade my issued M24 for my HTR without hesitation if I could. I am sure you will be very pleased with yours.
