I currently use a custom Mauser in 7x57 with 140gn'rs for speed goats, out to 250 it is like a laser and drops them. Anyone one who hunts antelope knows they spook very easily and if you can get a good vantage point and the wind is on your side, you can stalk them. Out in southeast CO there are thousands of acres of public land for hunting, but they are usually divided into mile segments, sometimes there is no good vantage point, or other hunters provide pressure and the goats bug-out.

So my point, for next year I was considering another chambering or caliber for 300-500Y. I currently have an sps-tac 308 1:12 and I am darn proficient with it, but shooting steel is much different than harvesting game.

Do any of you use your sps-tac for hunting? Mine likes 175 smk's, but I am thinking on working up some VLD's. My goal is the flattest and best terminal ballistics for those ranges. For those shooting VLD's with a 20" bbl do you like 155's, 168's, or 175's?

Does this seem feasible, or should I just get a 300 WM and be done with it?

See, it worked.

Cool, thanks for the feedback. I'm gonna pick some up and load them over some Varget. Any starting loads you guys like? I know each rifle is different, but I have found that load info for the sps-t to be pretty darn consistent from shooter to shooter.

Maybe try 41/42/43/44/44.5/45. I would be surprised if you find any difference in performance at 100 other than velocity and pressure. If your .308 won't shoot 175SMKs accurately with Varget you have a gun problem.

PGS and Cinch got me into the 308 and 155 combo. Deadly !

Re: Hunting plains game with your sps tac

Taken a few deer and such at good distances with SPS Tac when I really could not afford more. I always used 168gr Amax with varget and lapua brass. Never had a problem at all and majority of animals shot were 400+. Now after getting a few high dollar rifles I definetly see that the SPS tac with good handloads and a good stock/scope combo is a great stick for the money.

Re: Hunting plains game with your sps tac

can you get the velocity of the 155s up fast enough out of the 20" barrel to be really any flatter?

I have a 20" LTR that is a tack driver with 165 Gamekings and Accubonds and 175 SMKs and Berger VLD hunting but couldn't get 150 Amax, Sierras or Accubonds to group well and finally gave up.

I am running the 175s at 2575, I would neeed to get the 150s up to at 2800+ to be any flatter shooting.

I have not tried the 155 Scenars but would like to if I can get them up fast enough, preferably closer to 2900 but I don't think that's remotely possible with the factory barrel.

I ended up buying a 280 Ackley and 140g Accubonds for my primary hunting rifle for when I expect long shots though the 155 Scenar out of 308 still intrigues me...

So, I guess the question is what kind of velocity are you guys able to get out a factory 20" tube?, not a custom?

I tried scenar's in my tactical but only got them going around 2740 fps, went looking for something better.

This year I used Berger's 168 vld in Montana perusing mule deer and while I practice taking shots out to 600 have yet to take a shot over 290. The nice thing about it is the B.C. is so close to the 175 smk they can be interchanged. In other words if you run them at the same velocity as your 175 load, your drops that you are used to holding won’t change.

I started the OAL at 2.825 and ended up dropping them back another .015 and they are now grouping between ½ and ¾ moa consistently. With Lapua brass, Winchester primers and Varget I am getting 2640 fps out of the little tactical. It put the smack down on my mulie.

Re: Hunting plains game with your sps tac

^^ Perfect, my rifle already groups sub moa with 168 Amax, and I am currently getting 2614 fps over some Varget, Winny brass. Nice Buck BTW.

Just got my order from Bulletsamples.com will work up the 165's/ 168's in the SPS-T and the 155's in my SPS-V (26" bbl). They dont stock Lapua but do carry Berger, Sierra, Barnes, Hornady and Nosler. Got the Scenars from Grafs, with my C&R discount I am good to go.
