I currently use a custom Mauser in 7x57 with 140gn'rs for speed goats, out to 250 it is like a laser and drops them. Anyone one who hunts antelope knows they spook very easily and if you can get a good vantage point and the wind is on your side, you can stalk them. Out in southeast CO there are thousands of acres of public land for hunting, but they are usually divided into mile segments, sometimes there is no good vantage point, or other hunters provide pressure and the goats bug-out.
So my point, for next year I was considering another chambering or caliber for 300-500Y. I currently have an sps-tac 308 1:12 and I am darn proficient with it, but shooting steel is much different than harvesting game.
Do any of you use your sps-tac for hunting? Mine likes 175 smk's, but I am thinking on working up some VLD's. My goal is the flattest and best terminal ballistics for those ranges. For those shooting VLD's with a 20" bbl do you like 155's, 168's, or 175's?
Does this seem feasible, or should I just get a 300 WM and be done with it?
