Hi there,

I was wondering what results people are getting with 208amax out of 308w rifles during hunting.
After hitting the search button i see a lot of remarks that the 208 amax has great accuracy and terminal ballistics, alot of talk about how dear and pigs drop dead in their tracks etc. etc.
However, i hardly find anything about the results of these heavies on the meat.

About 2 years ago i got interested in the 208 amax after reading about some very impressive results on this forum, started by montana marine.
I was looking for a one round that would be both ideal for long range precision shooting aswel as hunting al type of game, with exception of the biggest.

So i installed a 32 inch barrel on my trg 22 with a 1-10 twist and began experiencing with these heavies. The results were very impressive, even out to 1606m/ 1756 yards (see the 308 win, 208 amax, rl17 thread).
For a hunting rifle it has become both huge and heavy, but i don't mind, got used to carry heavy rifles on the job.

The last few weeks i finally got some round of during some hunts. Shot a goose (yup, a goose as in big looking duck) at 430m and another 2 at 230-235m. Except for one (it was pretty much destroyed) the other 2 left their breast intact, so the good meat was still ok.

Yesterday i got to shoot a roe deer buck, also at 230m. It indeed dropped like a rock, it just fel on the spot with al 4 legs stiff as can be.
The entrance hole at his right shoulder was nice and small as usually, it just went half an inch over its heart, but destroyed both lungs, however the exit hole was as big as the fist of the Rock.
It litterly destroyed the left shoulder and ribcage, leaving blunt trauma al over the place, even to such extent that much part of the neck was just as the left shoulder also useless for consumption.

The fact that i placed the bullit on the shoulder instead of just a tad behind it (where it should have been) will have taken part of the blame for this kind of effect. But in the past i shot with hornady sst and nosler ballistic tips in the 150gr range, and never had these kind of explosive results.

Are other hunters having the same devastating results with 208 amax out of 308w rifles? Or am i putting to much blame into just one occasion/ result?

Kind regards,

NK.

I have used 178 and 168 amax in a 1:12 20" 308 on Pronghorn antelope at 300 and 500 Yards with good results and min damage. Although the exit was a tad larger, but not a fist size.

Nathan Foster of NZ has written a few books on long range hunting and specific details with regards to terminal ballistics. Here is a link to the 30 cal amax page. I am not affiliated, but he runs a small family business and seems to put a lot of time into his research.

I killed a large cow elk a couple years ago with a 208gr A-max from my 300wsm with a muzzle velocity of 2875fps at 517 yards.....I wouldn't have any problem using that bullet again on anything I could draw a tag for. The exit wound was a bit large but she dropped a the shot and we had enough meat to last until the next elk season.

Interesting article

This week shot 2 roe bucks with the 208 amax out of the 308w, one broadside shot and one neckshot. Although still heavy exitwounds, and destroying some of the meat, at least both bucks dropped dead in their tracks, did not even get a chance to move one step further, both died where they stood on the spot.

Amax's are great for hunting, they do upset quite a bit. Which is why, when I have an option, I put it in the neck, or other nerve target. When shooting at heart and lungs, I try and miss the shoulder itself for the very reason you describe. But this meat damage is not caused by the amax alone.
It looks like you have a good thing going, keep it that way.

My brother in law's first bull elk, taken in October 2006, with my Surgeon .308 and one 208gr AMAX from 500 meters out. Bullet broke both front shoulders, and left a golfball sized exit hole. He dropped right there and never moved....

Been shooting 178's for years. I have a box of 208's I've wanted to try for about two years but my rifle hates 2000mr and not sure I trust rl17 from the reports I've read. If I could get them close to 2600 like my 178's it would be my choice to hunt with in my 308. I can only imagine they hit like a freight train.

What's the issue with the rl17? No dog in the fight, I was thinking about picking some up for 208 in 308 so appreciate you sharing

I tried to find the threads where it was tested but had no luck. I remember reading it was pretty sensitive to temp changes. My 178 amax & varget load is just very predictable so I feel confident hunting with this load in a larger swing of temps. If I made a 208 a max load it would be for hunting, and I haven't had the time to do any load testing with it and rl17 so I personally have no confidence to make a load in a neutral temp day in the 70's here in the South then hunt on a 20* morning trusting my dope card. I've read it's a great combo to reach that magical 2600fps mark with great accuracy but some experienced some unpredictable swings from cool to hot days. So my Info is gathered from what others have said, not my own testing. Maybe someone with experience can chime in on that.
