Re: Hunting Whitetails with FGGM
Again, not a whitetail exactly, but last December I spotted some hogs east of my parents' farmhouse and grabbed the LR-308 with 10x Bushnell 3200. My TangoDown bipod long ago folded up; good thing the 19-round mag makes a great monopod. I'm zeroed at 200m and they looked farther away than that, so I sighted at the top of the biggest one's shoulder--she was standing broadside to me--and fired one Rem Match 168SMK. Critter DRT, I mean just flopped over without a wiggle and began to assume room temperature.
When I made my way downrange, the hog was pointed almost directly away from me, so she must have turned at the last second. I expected a big exit wound but couldn't find any booolet hole immediately, and after a minute's looking finally located an entry wound low in the belly just ahead of the right hind leg. That meant she was prolly a little more than 200m away and the 168SMK traveled almost the length of her. Didn't feel a thing, I hope.
My dad came out the next day and, though I estimated her to be something over 200 pounds, he said definitely more than 300, and he's a professional hog farmer who's been estimating hog weights for decades. He was mighty glad to see a threat to this season's crops eliminated, although her 8-10 friends got away. I also must say my LR-308/Bushnell is one GTG rig because I hadn't fired it in a year and it didn't lose zero. So I'll shoot at whitetails with confidence, if I see any with antlers next season.
