Rifle Scopes I could use some help in selecting a scope

I feel like the more I research into scopes the less I feel like I know to be able to make a good decision. I'm looking between 500 and 800 dollars to spend on my first glass. It'll be purchased near labor day(considering waiting for sales). I have a range near me that I shoot competitions at which can stretch out to 1400. I'm using a RPR in 6.5 Creedmoor. I'm new when it comes to optics. I've been shooting for over 20 years but it's almost exclusively been handguns. Glass is a completely new area for me and it isn't one I want to underestimate. Right now I'm using a primary arms 4x14 and feel like I could probably go for more magnification just to feel more comfortable shooting the extra long distances. Any suggestions?

Are you looking ffp? That's a hard price point to get down to. An option is to look in the private sales here you might be able to pick up a Burris XTR 2 or a non illuminated Swfa ss hd at the high end of your price point. Athlon and vortex will have some lower end lines near that buy it is probably worth searching to see if you can find something like the first two used as they have good warranties.

OK, there are a lot of scopes out there that may get you close, however 1400Y is a tough one on that budget. I only say this because I would never suggest a scope for this task that I would not purchase myself.

Just some tips on purchasing scopes.

Glass always trumps features: The glass quality, indexing, coatings are what will help you see the target at long distances. Research image contrast, chromatic abberation, light transmission, exit pupil.
Doesnt matter if you have illumination, external turrets, mil mil etc if you cant see the target when you dial the mag knob.

Mil/Mil or MOA/MOA This topic gets beat to death . Short answer, a good marksman can use either, find the one you want and get matching turrets/ reticles.

FFP or SFP: Long range is a lot easier if you do not have to estimate your 1:1 magnification point. Front Focal Plane will allow you to use your drop chart at any mag you select. SFP will only be true at one mag setting.

Warranty and the used scope: There are plenty of scopes that have lifetime or pretty extensive warranties, some that transfer to new owners: Leupold and Vortex are a couple. Point is, you can find good deals on the hide for a used scope, if there is anything wrong with it, send it in. (if it has a lifetime transferable warranty that is)

New scopes, old scopes and shot show: Right after Shot Show, there are a bunch of new scopes that come out with enhanced features and the such. Guys with Scope ADD will get in line for the release and then sell off their old scopes. Nothing wrong with a 3 year old model. With some exceptions in glass quality over 10 years, and usability (single turn, locking turrets)

Also , right after shot a scope may go for $3000, the next year its $2200, by the fourth year its $1400 on the secondary market. Now this does not apply for all scopes, but a trend in the mid to mid high market.

"Buy once Cry once" : Ive bought enough and lost enough to know the truth of this saying. Many times the scope will retain more value than the rifle it sits on. Three mediocre scopes will not equal the quality of one good scope. So if you can save up $800, then you can save up $1600 etc. Get the best that you can truly afford. A $2500 SB scope usually retains more value than a $500 Nikon after some years.

Magic 1000Y : For some reason this has been a magic number when choosing rifles and scopes. If you have access to an extended target range and will actually shoot over 1000Y then scope appropriately. No reason to spend on high magnification if you will realistically only shoot to 600Y. Along those lines, you can get by with a lower magnification mid range scope at under 500Y

Deals and Demos: Lastly there are plenty of Hide sponsor website that have scope demos, as retailers are restricted by MSRP, these demos are usually good as new. Also scope retailers will clear out older models for darn good prices. Eurooptic, CamerlandNY, and Liberty are just a few. There are plenty more here.
