There is a competition on Monday , bench rest and sillloute , centre fire and Tim fire that I'm entered to .

A mate who doesn't have permits but likes to shoot asked me if he could come along . I said no problem . He been out shooting with me a few times , with his son who is nearly 20 ... He bangs off quite a few of my rounds and does his son . Never offered to pay for them . Never asked him either .. So for this competition I made a point of going to an RFD and making arrangements with him that this Mate would go in an pay for rounds but the RFD would call me and I collect them . . Then I told my mate to go to the dealer , pay for what he wants and I would collect them .

Tonight he calls me and I reminded him that the shop was open tomorrow and that if he wanted to shoot Monday the cost for entry is 25 euro which is not a lot of money . For that he gets entry to the competition and some BBQ that the range owner does when comps are on . He then says could we not go to public land and shoot there instead . I asked him about rounds and he replies sure why don't I buy them and key him know what the cost is and he would pay me for them ...now don't get me wrong it is not the issue of money with me . I have brought many non shooters and people without permits out and they have used my gear without complaint from me but I wanted to see how this guy would react hen forced to pay for them himself ... He knows in out a lot of money on legal fees that I'm waiting to have reimbursed but I still have to pay for the rounds myself . It's not even that he doesn't have the money as he just paid out 39k for a new car himself ....

I have always and I mean always paid for rounds that I used in others . Either that or buddies with permits would ring me and ask if I had a few boxes to spare I would give to them and when I was short a few I would ring them and they would return the favour to me ...

people will ask to shoot something, never offer to pay for ammo, and if you ask them to pick up ammo, if they want to shoot, 1/2 the time you end up the asshole

If I am going shooting with someone I will buy all their ammo as well as what i plan to use myself. I also take people to therange and don't ask them to worry about the ammo if it is their first time ever shooting a gun. ( I only let them shoot my .22's for the first time anyway) But I always say. " Next time you wanna go out just pop into Wal-Mart and buy a $7 box of CCI and we will shoot all you want..."

I understand your frustration. I hand load for my AR15 meticulously and when at the range I get looks from the uber tacticool crowd. I always oblige if asked and never get reimbursed nor do I ask for it. However they're not repeat offenders either! Also since I have a 50bmg, my friends and family suddenly think if I'm within 4-5hrs I should be ready to haul it anywhere so they can show their friends.... Ammo at my cost. And THEN they never shoot more than 2-3 shots. If I load up and bring 50rds, I intend to SHOOT 50rds...

My main gripe is when guys shooting cheaply made/assembled ARs with bulk ammo see the tiny (relatively, haha) groups I get and want to try. A couple of weeks ago I'm at the range and a guy asks if he can shoot so I put ten rounds and say sure. He then treats it as a may dump exercise where he them gets up and just says, "niiiiiiiice." Just a complete lack of respect for the rfile, ammo, and the time I put in them both in my opinion.

Just got a call off him and he now wants to meet to discuss bringing his sons friend as well .

Just decided i would tell him when he arrives they pay for what they shoot ! No objection to them coming but I'm damned if I'm going to be anyone's fool ... It's just this guy . He really pussed me off with the attitude . I can't afford to pay 39k for a new car do I'm fucked if he isn't paying for the rounds ...

I really really hate cheap fuckers ... All the other guys are totally the opposite .. A few weeks ago a buddy in conversation said he was running low in .45 . A dew days later while he was working in my area so he stopped in for a coffee and i went to the safe and got him 2 spare boxes I had . Last week I was at a new range with him and I was running low on .22 so he threw me 400 cci he had spare ...

Money is not the issue here ! The principle is what's bugging me ..

The 'Principle' is the point to stand on. Have a chat with this ignorant person, and explain to him the etiquette of shooting.

Not much different than the etiquette of borrowing a vehicle. One returns a borrowed vehicle with as much or MORE gas than what it had when one took it.

If you really like the person, then you wash/vacuum the vehicle too, right?

Guns are not much different. But other than "new intro's", nobody shoots for free. That's just courteous, respectful, decent, honorable, and stand-up 'manly'.

Anything less is juvenile and yellow.

Just my thoughts.

I'd suggest just being honest with him about the costs of shooting. As I said above, I've flat out told friends and family no but after I explain the time and cost associated with shooting, they understand. Some don't know or realize the costs. Educate first. If they're still douches, ask to drive his new car then do burnouts and use as much gas as possible! Then just walk away....

I think we've all been there and I agree it's maddening. The only solution is to not take people shooting who don't have their own guns. My thinking and past experiences have shown/proved that if they're not popping for ammo they're also not popping for gas/lunch/dinner/etc. so unless you're suddenly feeling like a large wallet charity, it's best to just skip inviting them in the first place...

I have taken a lot of people shooting over the years and I can count on one hand the people that have offered to pay for the ammo. Not that I ever expected it.

A couple of years ago several of our Japanese engineers went shooting with a couple of us from work. We were out about 3 hrs and burned through a couple of bricks of 22, about 300 7.62X39 and the same in 223. when we were ready to leave, these guys all started pulling out $ 20.00's. I wouldn't accept it, but it was nice of them to offer.

That's the really maddening part of the whole bloody thing . For example 9mm is now 25 euro a box of 50 so it's certainly not cheap by any stretch of the imagination ...6.5 is 50 euro a box and shotgun 12.50 a box .

So the chat went like this ... Everyone pays for what they shoot . Anyone doesn't like it have a nice day .... Get this he even asked me why I didn't want his sons friend coming to my home on Monday ... Ehhh Security and the fact that I don't want everyone in the fucking country knowing I have firearms ....

You know something I'm just a sucker ! I love the sport so much I try ad convert people and it only ends up costing me money while this guy drives around in his new car .... If he does end up coming and at this stage I hope he does not I'm RO there . Anyone steps out of line and they aw gone ...

I never have had much of a problem with people shooting my ammo up without being appreciative or offering to reimburse. It is good to get people out shooting so I see it as a donation to a worthy cause.

Now when it comes to reloading components it is a different story. For some reason people seem to think that I picked up all of my bullets & brass for free and I should share the wealth. So now I have a talk with the borrowing person and agree on how we are going to even up.

However, they're everywhere. I started a small business cutting trees as a ministry to others, and usually only charge 40% of what the big guys do. Even though I give people a great deal, they still are offended that I ask for any payment to offset costs. Some even ask to borrow my $1400 saw to do it themselves! One gent, supposedly a friend, guffawed at the quote I gave his wife when she asked, and said, "I'm not gonna pay for tree service!"

So, I have transitioned to firearms instruction. They have to pay me for classes if they want their CCW permits! Tee-hee!

Actually now I'm just contemplating ringing him tomorrow and telling him the shoot is off . Not even Interested at this point of even allowing him come along and just me and my son go and meet up with all the other lads and their kids ...

And believe me I'm not usually this pissed off without good reason ...

Funnily enough a good buddy ( with guns & permits) only remarked to me this week that should I eer have a heart attack outside my local PD that all phones landline and mobile will suddenly and without warning crash leaving the only possible outcome for me as popping my clogs on the paving outside whilst the entire station sudden become deaf and blind !

Don't think I'm popular with them for some reason

With me, it all depends.

If it's someone who is totally new to shooting, then I flip the bill for everything. They use my gear and shoot my ammo. I figure it's a small price to pay if I can hook them into the sport.

Now if it's someone who does a lot of shooting, but just wants to try my gear or is coming over from something else (pistol, shotgunning, etc.) then I suggest they pick some ammo up. I figure they are getting the use of several thousand dollars of my equipment, then can at least drop the coin on some ammo.

If they don't want to, then so be it.

Down here in Texas our fathers and granfathers teach us to never arrive at an event empty handed. What this means if you get invited to a ranch , you show up with meat, beer, cigarrets and sodas. If you get invited to a range you provide your own ammo. Period enough said, I hate those curb worms!

To me it really depends on their attitude. If someone acts like they are entitled then I may ask for a couple bucks. But if they are genuinely interested and appreciative I have no issue providing some ammo.

that one post about the shooter not respecting the gun.. totally fucking pisses me off.. i see chumps all over the local range that think there rambo.. im all for tacticool once in awhile if you truly know what your doing..

new 300wm is coming in 2 weeks, and all my buds what to shoot it.. im charging $3.50 a shot no excuses factoring in bll life to ship it out get it replaced my reloaded ammo costs..

i dont have problems with people wanting to get a feel for the gun, but your not shooting them unless you chip in..

@lonewolfUSMC if they are a new shooter im less of a dick, i will let them use any of my less expensive guns

No offence but I think your getting ripped off on your bullets and shotgun cartridges.

For 12 euro I can get alphamax here. But cheap cartridges to shoot on the range we only pay about 5 euro a box. And even then, if you buy a slab it works out cheaper.

As for the 6.5 its 39 euro for a box of hornady 140 gr softpoints. And again, if you buy in bulk it works out cheaper.

None of my guests have ever balked at picking up my brass though many are baffled as to why I don't want the .22 shells!

It's typically family though;Daughters, brothers, sister, brothers in law, nieces, friends of my daughters and thus, it's my treat.

Both my brothers and my 'in laws', offered to pay for the ammo they used. A nice gesture and more than enough to confirm their good character, which I already know!

I sympathize Eddie, as calling someone out on an obvious affront can cause more problems!

Example; I got tired of a friend counting missed "Tap-ins" while playing golf two weeks ago. These are the finishing putts one makes that are often very short and what informal players call a "Gimmee". In reality, a gimmee shouldn't be longer than a few inches: Even the pros sometimes miss 1 foot putts!

Unfortunately, my friend Bob was tapping putts up to 3.5' away, missing them, and counting them as though he had made them.

I usually don't give a shit when we aren't playing for money: if he can live with his petty cheating in informal play, I don't care. But when the wheels fell off on what should have been a great hole for me (Great drive, decent 2nd shot, then a total collapse resulting in a bogie 5) resulted in him claiming a par (4) after missing a 3 foot putt for 5, I called him out.

I did it with humor, pointing out we hadn't said anything about his prior few missed (But nevertheless counted as made) putts, or his grounding the club in the traps (2 stroke penalty!)..., I drew the line at his doing so in order to beat my honest, screwed up, 5!

He was extremely pissed and has complained to several of our friends. Interestingly, I have not, to date, eaten my gun out of guilt.

In short, expect your "friends" to get butt sore no matter how delicately you put it and perhaps you'll be pleasantly surprised!

Life is too short to hemorrhage money for ingrates and parasites.

My 8 yr old got to shoot my .303 . Will post a pic of his target. Bloody hell. 100m and he hit the target 5 times from 5 shots and a pretty decent group to add . He is delighted with himself and so am I

Good timing on this thread coming up. A friend of mine asked me if I would go with him to his folk's house over this coming weekend and replace a section of a tin roof on their hunting shack. I've been hunting with them before, his folks were always hospitable to me, so sure, why not help them out!

Then it starts...he asks "hey, can we take your car? My front end is acting a little weird.."
ok...so what have you been driving around town the last couple months?
"well, my car!"
and it's been fine so far...
"well yeah, but, i just feel better if we took yours."

Now I knew that was going to happen, as I've taken 3 trips there with him before. Once our other friend drove, and twice me. All three times...this friend never paid for any gas. (it's a 4 and half hour drive one way) And still had the nerve to complain about me not letting him smoke in my car.

Next up, "Oh, you should bring your prairie dog gun, we'll go shoot some"
This got me excited! So I said "sure, what kind are you bringing?"
Him: "Oh I'll just use yours." (he didn't ask, mind you. Just stated he would)

Since it's not like the prairie dog fields of the Dakotas and we only shoot 8 or 9 and hour, I decided it wasn't worth being a prick about it. So I tell him, "Ok, well it shoots such and such ammo the best, you should go pick up however much you want to shoot."

"Well why can't I just use yours? You make them for free!" (referring to me handloading...) So after explaining to him it still costs money, but it would be (insert big word that I can't think of) of me to charge him for them, he should just buy whatever he wants to shoot. Suddenly I'M being ridiculous, and cheap, yada yada.

Again, a repeatable occurence. Every time I go shooting with him, it's "hey let me shoot your (insert type of gun)" and continues to blast away. Now I'm with the rest of you; new shooters, I'll let them shoot my stuff no problem. I'll let you shoot a few through my X brand in return for shooting your Y brand, whatever. The obvious things like that, I'm fine with. But after the 4th or 5th time shooting with someone, and they don't bring their own guns for any number of excuses (he even said he didn't want to shoot HIS 9mm because it was too loud, so can I bring MINE for him to shoot...yeah, figure that one out) and bitch when you ask them to bring their own ammo...it starts to piss me off. I even started leaving the price tags on the boxes of ammo, and telling him I just picked up ammo for everyone, you can pay me for what you want to shoot. Of course, now I'm being a cheapass dick! haha

I agree completely! Most rural people are brought up like this. My shooting buddy invited a female friend of ours to her first time shooting. Not only did she ask, without being prompted, for a list of calibers to buy ammo for, she shows up with SNACKS! Coolers (plural) full of drinks, chips, dip, candy bars, sandwiches. I told her,
"We're only going to be her for a few hours!"
She replies, "Yeah but I'm using your guy's expensive stuff, just returning the favor."

You can guess which one of these two people in this post gets invited along when we go shooting now...haha

I have a few friends that just want to do mag dump after mag dump. That is ok if they buy ammo.

One friend I will take him out about once every two years and we will have fun. He is a duck hunter and always offers to take me duck hunting. Steel is meant to be shot at not shot.

I have taken some foreigners out and they offered to pay for ammo.

I like going shooting with those who like to shoot how I shoot. They know how much it costs and we will shoot each other's stuff and it for the most part is fairly equal.

Yes moochers suck. It sucks even more when you are sitting out there with all custom stuff and a pile of brass beside you and then someone asking if they can have my brass. Yes you can for a buck each. They never like that answer.

I just got back my road bike almost two years after I loaned it to a guy. When I loaned it it was assumed he'd have it for a month, to do a triathlon with, then return it. It needed some work, so I told him he was welcome to borrow it, but it needed some work (which I would reimburse him for).

After hounding him every couple months since mid-2010, I was finally adamant that I needed it back. He returned it, but didn't ring the doorbell and instead texted "didn't look like you were home", ie he wanted to avoid having to talk to me about it. He remembered to text that I owed him $35 for the repairs, but neglected to include that he'd ruined both my riding gloves and helmet. Somehow I have not found the time to text him back....

People like that are not your friends. Cut them loose and move on.

I used to go to the range with a friend, and he was great to go with. He rarely would let me drive (he is ocd about driving), but I would try to pay his range fee or whatever we stopped and got at the mini mart. Sometimes we would trade guns and shoot, that was always fun.

Most people though, they just want to shoot a rifle you have a lot of money in and not pay for ammo or barely even thank you for it.

How about this one.. my best friend that I have known for about 6 years one day asks me to help him with installing a hard wood floor.. I did his whole floor basically by myself. Well one day I ask for a ride somewhere or for him to bring me something I forgot at in his car after a softball game ( playing for his schools team because they needed an extra guy BTW. Was like pulling teeth ! He even said he would drop it off on his way back from work but since he forgot and had already gotten home he didn't want to make the drive ( Half a mile away, .5 miles, 2640 FT).. I was pissed and let him know it on the phone. 15 minutes later I see him pull in my drive way with what i had left in his car LOL

I never hesitate to help him or anyone for that matter with labor or my skill set. But when someone I have helpped wont do the simplest thing I get pissed LOL Sorry for the rant

Myself and a friend belong to a state wide gun owners organization. A local member puts on informal shoots and cook outs a couple times a year. Most everyone who attends pitches in for the food and drink, etc. I bring a lot of unusual and custom stuff to shoot. I have no problem with anyone there shooting my stuff as long as they ask and listen my instructions.

Over the weekend we had our yearly meet and greet with a couple hundred members. I brought everything from a Shiloh Sharps to a Parker Hale M86 I just got. I brought several hundred rounds of FGMM for the 4 .308s I brought along with tons more commercial and hand loaded ammo for everything else. A bunch of people shot a bunch of ammo over the course of the day, and had a ball. We had new shooters that went from shooting my TRR to ringing steel and picking off drink bottles at 300 meters.

I'm fortunate to have some exotic and high end toys that many shooters never see and I very much enjoy letting other shooters experience them. Every single person that shot my stuff was courteous and offered to pay something for what they shot. My buddy, who is a Hide member always helps me set up my stuff and pick up brass etc. As far as I'm concerned he gets to shoot as much as he wants of my ammo. As long as they are respectful with my stuff and willing to learn I'll take anybody to shoot.

Something my Dad told me forty plus years back comes to mind; "You have a lot of acquaintances in life...but few true FRIENDS".

I've found it far easier to tell problem people what I think now ,than I did years back. Used to be so worried about offending them or hurting their feelings. When they were screwing me the whole time and apparently THAT was OK with them.

Years back I had a situation where three of us, who were all friends, had access once a year to some pretty decent quantities of linked 7.62x51 from a nearby Natl Guard Range. The three of us always did a simple 1/3 each split.

One year one of them couldn't make the day and we still took care of him and gave him his 1/3.

Year later the shoe was on the other foot and he was the lone attendee. The other guy and myself were AMAZED when he simply kept all the ammo himself. He never offered to give us even a few hundred rds!!

I could go on and on over the people who ask you to load for them, mount a scope, etc. Always with zero remuneration. They seldom pay you back with components , parts or whatever.

On the other hand just yesterday I had a good friend who's still got some military contacts drop me off 20 clean ammo cans
as he knew I was looking for some. NO charge.

I called and Thanked him and asked what I could do to repay him? He tells me; "What about all the ammo you have given me?
"Keep the cans. They're a gift for all the stuff you've done for me in the past".

Thats a friend.

I simply replied that he could go to my RFD and purchase all the ammo he wants to shoot for himself and his oldest boy If he was coming and the RFD would then call me back and I would collect it ... Then I replied when he did that he was more than welcome to use my gear any time he wants ...

It remains to be seen if he actually does do it but I'm not bringing him out again unless he does ... Anybody that has used my gear has always in some way offered to purchase some ammo or pay for gas and the like ... I'm all for bringing people out shooting . Hell I brought a couple of people from the hide out that were over here and that was an absolute pleasure .. That was my treat and I was more than happy to do it seen as they made the effort to call me and hook up when they wre here .

And I still say here and now anybody here please give me a call and a data shooting is my treat to you ...

Its so true. And its a bummer if you actually need your "friend's" help and they turn out to be just an acquaintance instead. You're lucky when those that turn out to be just another of the typical self absorbed user types just reveal themselves for what they are.

Oh im getting more and more exacerbated by this guy by the minute .

He rings me today asking me legal advice about a second house he owns and has let out to a tenant ...

Then despite me telling telling him directly to go buy rounds and a cleaning kit he then asks me to go shooting go shooting again and that he couldn't afford to buy rounds ... And he wants to bring his 20 year old son as well ...

I'm not even angry at the guy but I'm pissed off as to why he expects me to buy rounds and doesn't even offer to buy done or even give me the money to pay for them .... . He says to me to pick them up and he will give me the money but I know that ain't going to happen because he will have left his wallet or something at home ... And I refuse to let him and his son shoot anymore at my expense .

Well me and my son are going next week . And this cheap ass fucker can go swing ! ..

You'll go crazy trying to figure out why he just can't "get it" that paying his way is the right thing to do.

Some people just don't get it.

Had a friend go to the range with me for the first time last weekend, it was his first time ever shooting, we were shooting some 300WSM rounds, which are pretty expensive, shot off something like 80 rounds, most if which I handloaded myself, and in the end he put all my stuff away, put the brass in their respective boxes (even organized the numbered ones), and offered to pay for the rounds he shot, I couldn't possibly charge him, to me if you offer to pay me, you're a good enough guy and you can use my stuff for free.

On the other hand, that same day at the range, some guy who was shooting like a maniac with his 10/22 comes by and asks me about my rifle and round (he said the rounds look "scary") then asks to shoot. I say sure, you can shoot off a round. He shoots of five rounds and walks away without saying a thing, couldn't believe the nerve of the guy.

Now unless you're a friend or offer to pay for the rounds before hand, I don't even let you touch my stuff.

There is an unwritten and unspoken etiquette in the shooting community.

If I use your gear and fire off your rounds I either offer to replace them with cash in the hand , or bring something to the range like food and beverages and pay for gas and things like that . It's polite . It's shows respect for your gear and the time you may have taken to reload the rounds being used . I don't just say nothing , pay for nothing and then have the neck to ask could I bring my sons with me next time and then to add insult to injury put the poor mouth on ....

I have two friends who belong to a very nice gun club north of Atlanta. I am not a member. Whenever we go up I pay for the gas and beer.

They're not into our particular type of shooting, but whenever they take a hankering to burst some caps through my build, they're more than welcome at my expense.

Their annual range dues are $300/yr.

Born and reared in the South. It's a matter of consideration and respect.

If you "buddies" don't show you that, then they're not your "buddies". Cut 'em loose.

With my buddies I shoot with, we use eachothers ammo, and we leave it at that. We shoot eachothers guns, and we don't way a word whether there is any payment involved, because frankly, we don't care.

Sure, if someone wants to use my rifle, and wants to shoot it a lot, they can fund the ammo, but at my range, my rules. No rapid strings with my bolt gun, don't do any mag dumps.

Most of the time, we just compete with 22s, since we are limited to 200 yards, and it's fun getting those little pills out there.

Nothing wrong with that. I have a buddy who does the same shit but not any more. He recently locked himself out of his house and I have a spare key. He called me to see if I would drive over and let him in but I said if he wants the key to call a cab and come get it. He comes over all pissy and I let him know why I did that. Wanna know how I know he's gay (he's not really, he's just a bitch)? He started whining about our friendship but used the word "relationship" and I immediately stopped that conversation. I told him were not dating so don't ever use the word relationship and have my name in the same sentence.

Edit: forgot to add that he's also invited his boss and peers to go shooting before and nobody showed up with any ammo, even himself.

A lot of whining here. If you offer to take someone shooting then dont expect them to pay for ammo. If someone wants to go shooting them make them pay or not come. Its simple really...

Not just shooting. I offshore fish a good bit and anybody new that comes is given a free ride. Many are taken back that I expect a split of gas,food,drinks and baits if they come again. They act oblivious to a 70 mile ride offshore and the cost of bait and gear. Then again some will offer money without being told. They get to come again. Much like shooting, just paying for their ammo like paying their part for gas expenses on an offshore trip doesn't account for total cost it just offsets it. Things like initial investment and wear on your gear, etc not to mention your time spent nursing newbies make simply paying gas or ammo a no brainer but most are either too cheap or stupid to realize that. Oddly enough, when it comes to shots fired or splitting up fish everybody wants their fair share. It is an very good meter by which to choose "friends".
