I don't know if anyone else has thought of or tried anything like this before but I will share it for what it's worth.
By using a VERY THIN layer of brown poly shipping tape it prevents any metal to metal contact but it's only 1/10000 of an inch thick (even thinner once compressed) so there is no shimming. I used 1 layer NO MORE and once the scope is mounted it will conform to all the microscopic "hills and valleys". I got the idea from the Burris Zee rings that use the thick nylon inserts. But here is a few pics of before and after a scope was mounted into the rings.
When I removed the scopes they never had a mark on them.. [img:center]
