I have gone full retard - but have to ask a scope adjustment question...

I have the elevation adjustment down (down is up and up is down)- windage I don't get .. Does it work the same way ? Left is right and right is left? Just confused..

Just read an article that says if the impact is to the right of the cross hair you adjust the turret left(counter clockwise) - same for if the impact is on the left you adjust to the right(clockwise)... I am bit embarrassed to ask this question - I just can't picture it in mind and there not a damn thing on youtube downing this, at least not that I can find...

The directions on the turret describe the direction you will move the Bullet’s point of impact: left moves the bullet left, right moves it right, down moves it down, up moves it up.

Just crank the elevation all the way in one direction. Then crank the windage all the way in the other direction. Take a shot. Then crank both all the other direction and take #2 shot. That will assure you that you do have adjustments. Work from there.

Shit I tried that and got nowhere.... even tried the "nipple twister" method no luck..

I think you have iron sights and reticles mixed up. To raise point of aim on iron sights you would lower the front sight post. To raise point of aim on a scope you dial elevation up.

yes, opposite of the direction you want to go, then you have to move the rifle the other way to put the target back in the middle.

The direction etched on the turrets are the direction of POI shift. If you want POI to shift left, follow the arrow on windage turret.

Your reticle is actually moving "opposite" to the direction on turret. Meaning, when you turn "left" on turret arrow, your reticle will move right. This cause you to physically push your gun left to line up your reticle, which get the desire result (POI shift left).

I updated my notes - I just didn't think windage worked the same as elevation turrets did... So I have it ass backwards.... that explains why when I adjust left I shot wide left -- I got it now - not gonna forget this..

When adjusting sights...

if adjusting the front sight, chase your impacts.
If adjusting the rear sight, adjust in the direction you want the impacts to move. An optic is marked to adjust as a rear sight. This works the same whether adjusting elevation or windage.

So, if your impacts are to the right of the target, adjust the front sight right or the rear sight left.

There is no stupid scope adjustment question. There is no rhyme, reason, or industry standard as to which direction the adjustments are made. I own a lot of scopes...I mean a lot. My Schmidt and Bender PMII has driven me nuts the last two days. First, elevation adjustment direction is not marked on the turret. Had to find the manual on the internet. Guess what...obviously there are different variations/improvements made to the PMII because mine is different from the manual. They talk about locking rings...mine doesn't have one, and pop-up turn indicators...mine doesn't pop up, it has a window. Now for the greatest...the windage knob does have the direction noted. Today I received an Accuracy International windage turret for my PMII...and the direction marked is opposite from the original knob. A lot of this stems from the fact that the Europeans think of adjustments in terms of moving the aimpoint (crosshairs) to the shot impact and Americans think of moving the shot to the aimpoint.

Yes, European sights (and some older scopes) can be confusing. The direction marked is Opposite, as if saying "When left, go this way".

This got me when I first started shooting too and the easy way to remember it for me is to think about moving the bullet, not the reticle.

if you want the bullet impact to move up then dial up, if the bullet needs to go left then dial left, etc.

for me it’s way harder to think about the reticle moving in the opposite direction.

Tape it off and don't look at it. You should be able to make an adjustment without looking at it anyway.

Yup.

Aim at center and shoot 1 shot. Now keep the gun held down and dial the cross hair to that hole. May need 2-3 times for fine tuning, but super simple and easy.

It will be ok , someday far down the road you will wake up and all this stuff make sense . At least I am hoping it does till then I will keep trying and reading never give up . heck I am still waiting for those flying cars we were premised would be out in the 70's and 80's they can keep the electric cars I wanna drive the friendly sky's with no speed limits or traffic lights or at least make it to an age where I can have my high speed police chase with a mobility scooter down a highway towards Mexico like O.J except doing 150 with a beer cooler and a confederate flag flying in the wind behind me .

There are literally labels on the knobs telling you how they work.

That and some elementary cause and effect observation (I shoot, I adjust the windage/elevation in a certain direction, I shoot again and compare the two) would eliminate the need to ask.

But apparently some people find that too difficult or have to overthink it to the point where they get lost.

Just joined this site after seeing "have I gone full retard" on Google. Hopefully you've fully recovered! I was sighting in a new 243 yesterday and did the exact same thing, you would have been proud of me. On top of the confusion you spoke of, trying to use some makeshift rests I was constantly having to re adjust made everything a complete failure. I did have a moment of clarity with my scope confusion, but made the decision to stop shooting and get some proper equipment. A trip to Bass Pro and a Caldwell sled later, life is back to normal.
