I need a safe/armory

Re: I need a safe/armory

Browning safes are very nice. Some of their new safes even have cut outs in the door so that you can keep a few scoped rifles mounted on the door. They are expensive when you get to the Medallion series and above. I have a small medallion in the house that got full pretty quick.

I bought a massive Winchester Silverado safe to put in the garage. It has locking bolts on the top and sides, a pretty good door organizer that will hold several handguns and other goodies, and its so heavy that it cannot be moved without some mechanical means. They are a really good buy for the money, at about half the price of a browning. here is a pic. I dont mind showing it, because most of the stuff shown has already been sold, due to recent job loss.

Re: I need a safe/armory

I'd be curious as to the statistics on percentage of break ins that lead to an attempt at opening a safe and of those, the success rate of getting it open. I have to imagine we are talking 1 in hundreds of thousands.

I have always been the guy that researches purchases exhaustively and then spends too much money on the best of the best. However, I think that in this case, I'm not convinced in the need for that much safe. I'd have to see compelling, hard statistics.

Re: I need a safe/armory

I'm leaning towards a cannon. I can buy it locally at academy. And I can inspect the ones they have in stock. I just don't feel comfortable buying something that large and heavy without putting my hands on it. If I were to order some other safe online I would be quite upset to move that big bitch into place only to have made a mistake while ordering, lol.
Sorry for the delayed response. I work overseas and have been busy lately.

Re: I need a safe/armory

I just see the safe as a deterrent, it's good for keeping the kids out and will protect your stuff in case of fire for hopefully enough time for the FD to put it out. The odds of my place being broken into are very slim, the odds of them locating the safe in it's dark corner under cover and then launching an attack in an attempt to open it while there's thousands of dollars worth of electronics, art, and other home valuables around which are not bolted down is much slimmer. So that being said, I have a $1k Diamond Back imported safe which served it's purpose very well for the last five years, and I'll now be upgrading to a $1600 Bighorn.

Re: I need a safe/armory

I went through the same thought when I was looking for my first safe and am glad I decided to go with 3 medium sized units. For me it's nice to have my hunting stuff seperated from my tactical stuff and ammo filling the 3rd.

I also decided not to spend for name and or a few more degrees of protection. the average house fire never gets above the ratings of "lesser" brands and also doesn't last as long. That's if it ever happens.

Re: I need a safe/armory

True.. The temp ratings of safes are good. If your safe is going to be placed in the middle of the house, then yea, I would get a higher temp rated safe because your house will burn @1600+ deg in the middle of a house. I put my safe against an outside wall there is not really that much "fuel" around it and the temp wont get to 1600deg like it would in the middle of your house.
