Gunsmithing I Need CNC Manufacturing for a New Aluminum & Composite Rem 700 Rifle Stock Design.

Hello Boomstickers,

I have spent the last five years designing a new rifle stock design for the Remington M700 rifle series. I've been in contact with Remington, but it has become increasingly difficult to spark their interest or receive any email/phone replies. Note: They have not seen the design yet. My structural design is similar to the AICS in that it has a bolt-on aluminum frame with composite features, but it involves a completely different philosophy, style and rifle application.

I think this design is very marketable. I am an artist / professional designer with prior experience in rifle stock designs. My current design is by far the best firearms-related work I've ever created, but I have surpassed my level of expertise on the engineering and manufacturing end. I need an experienced rifle stock manufacturer to help take it into production. I currently have everything completed in Solidworks (assemblies and files) along with two fully functional, post-processed prototypes printed via a high-end 3D printer.

I cannot post photos for obvious reasons.

I live in the Cincinnati, Ohio area. If you know of any "reliable" manufacturers near me who can help, please let me know. Also, if you have any contact names, email addys and phone numbers for the right people at Accuracy International, Magpul, Howa or any other qualified manufacturer please send me a PM.

You have to show what you've got. In order to disclose your design, and feel relatively safe about doing it, you have to do provisional patent application. Just my advice...

Patents and copyrights are currently in the works. Even so, there's no benefit for me to post any online photos at this time. It would need to be near an official release date for that to happen. ...Thanks for your help, though!

fdkay: I'm not looking for a one or two stock run. I'm looking for a reliable firearms-related company to help take them into mass production. I am not looking for stocks to be made for my personal rifle - although obviously one will probably end up on my personal rifle, right?

schmi015: I checked out their website and they look to have CNC capability, but they seem more like a custom gunsmithing service that works with individual rifle, already-existing rifles, stocks and actions. I see they resell already-existing stocks on their website but also machine their own actions,so I will keep them handy.


THEIS: I can do (A) as I have done this before back in 2000. I had a company called "WeaponArts" where I sold PSG1-type stocks that I designed for FAL rifles. I can create a website and online ordering, but there are still the issues of assembly, QC, warehousing and shipping. The best case scenario would be for me to work with a company that has already made rifle stocks and can make / market these as well - which would be (2). I'm also good with (3) because I'm really more of a fine artist (oil paintings) and that is the focus of my life. ...I just happen to be one of the few 2nd Amendment, supporting, weapon-designing, politically Conservative artists out there in America.

Background:
Here's some background on me so that you know I am not just a "tinkerer."

During the Assault Weapons Ban I had photoshopped a PSG1 stock on the ass end of a FAL rifle along with the palm shelf grip and many people really liked it. Purest hated it. The consensus was that it could never be designed to work on a FAL because of the angled recoil tube. A year later I was selling them online. Magpul and DS Arms purchased several of my stock and grip sets, reverse-engineered them and shortly afterward there was a proliferation of these type of stocks for a variety of rifles from several companies who saw the potential. Their manufacturing capabilities were superior to mine so I could no longer compete.

That whole new niche of custom tactical stocks that quickly emerged back then all stemmed from a silly photoshopped photo of a FAL rifle. Today it has now evolved to those crazy complex twisted steampunk metal rifle stocks with all kinds of knobs, springs, mono-pods, levers, rails and which look like they came straight out of a Dr. Seuss book.

Here is the stock, grip and handguard combination I created for the FN-FAL and L1A1 type rifles from 1998 to 2002. This was my entry into the weapon parts manufacturing world. My latest design incorporates far more superior design software and functioning prototypes this time around.

And lastly, here are two $3K-each S&B PMII Marksman rifle scopes that are currently residing on top of my two prototypes because I wanted two really high-quality rifle scopes to officially crown my creations.... but I was also on a tight budget. So these two scopes are not real! I created them in Solidworks, printed them out on my 3D printer and detailed them to look like the real deal. I did the same with the scope mount, rings, the two M700 actions, bolts and barrels.

I can't post pics of my new stock design, but this S&B scope photo is indicative of the level of effort, detail and quality that has gone into my two prototypes. They both have lenses installed as well, but they don't magnify anything and are merely for show.

NOTE: Anyone considering buying themselves a spiffy new 3D printer and start designing crap, do some serious research first. The time it takes to just "print out" the parts that assemble into ONE replica S&B scope was over 80 hours of printer time. That does not include the time involved in improperly-printed parts, designing, refinishing and detailing to which I lost track of all of that.

....Well, in all honesty, these other companies made a much better version than I made. I was making each one by hand using silicone molds and plastic resin. I had a local machine shop machine out the internals (BIC Precision). They looked great and my customers were very happy, but injection molded parts are much more durable and consistent.

Funny note on BIC Precision. They ordered "ink pens" with their name on it as a marketing tool. When they handed me one I asked them why they just didn't buy a box of BIC pens from Walmart? ...They were not amused.

I'm not in Ohio, but I do have the manufacturing resources. Kitamura, Haas, etc...

Making one offs and/or production runs is a big part of what LRI does. If you have part models, I can program and machine it. If for some reason I can't, I'll be the first to tell you my limitations. Respecting your property is never an issue with us. NDA's, whatever. I sign them frequently.
