Ok, so hog hunting is starting to spread up to the WV area and I have been pondering getting a bigger bore AR for some time. At first I thought about just getting the Stag 6.8 SPCII upper and calling it a day but I want to be able to do some longer distance shooting for deer as well. So from what I looked at so far i've narrowed it down to the RRA LAR-8 or Armalite/Eagle AR-10. Both are pretty much the same price for the rifle or carbine setup. I was wondering if there is anything that may sway my decision making in one way versus the other?

Just my opinion... Things in the AR10 market are much more proprietary than the AR15 world... RRA is one of the worst, go armalite/DPMS if you have ambitions of modifications one day.. MA TEN if you really wanna do it right

It appears Armalite released a new AR-10 this year at SHOT that now accepts PMags. If you like the Armalite name, you might want to consider that you'll be able to pick between two magazine patterns now. For me, I have a few DPMS-based guns and have had great luck with PMags; I won't even bother messing around with anything else anymore.

Do tell more. I am really trying to weed out whichever is best. And yea just the simple fact that Armalite is, well of course Armalite, gives it one up from RRA.

Also, is getting the carbine gonna make a HUGE difference when my normal max yards to shoot would be around 700 or so? I'd like to get the lighter carbine for hunting but if its a big difference for target shooting/long range hunting i'd probably still get the full size.

Just looked that up... only $300 more. Plus its all black and looks pretty nice. Out of stock at the moment but when the time comes that may be an option.

Just to clear up, when I said RRA is one of the worst, I meant in compatibility, not quality. RRA puts out some descent enough rifles, but very proprietary, meaning their upper fits THEIR lower, etc.. for what you are looking for, 700 yds, and hunting, Id say go 18" barrel if possible and have fun!

Gotcha, i'm glad you clarified that because I saw all of RRA's "warnings" on the site saying how most parts are not compatible with other brands. Def good to know. Also I don't see an Armalite 18" listed but i'm assuming I could pick one up from another company that would be compatible if I did need to get a longer barrel correct, or are they like RRA with parts?

I wouldn't take a Rock River if someone gave it to me.

Incompatible parts plus I had the chance to see one operate. Every 5th or 6th round would not eject properly. The gun had to be modified with a different buffer assembly just so it would shoot.

Just from the parts issues i'm leaning more towards the Armalite.

I have an AR 10, and an LAR 8, but I have to admit, I've never fired the rock river yet. Both seem like good guns, in fact I bought the rock river on the advice of a friend who thought they had better craftsmanship, so I'm surprised to hear the negative review here.

I suppose it was inevitable that once the military adopted a large frame AR rifle design that the rest of the competition would begin to converge their designs with the company that the contract was awarded to. Little surprise then that Armalite is adopting PMAGs since these are designed for the SR25/M110. This is probably a good thing for interchangability of parts in the future since there has never been any kind of standardization in the AR-10 type rifles before...

Yea i'm def gonna have to read up some more before purchasing one. I was also thinking if I was gonna get the carbine, would it be a smart idea to just go ahead and get a 6.8 SPC upper for to use on one of my AR-15s for the short range pig stopper and get a fullsize AR-10 for the long range stuff. From what Armalite says on their site, the diff between accuracy on a carbine and fullsize is 1 MOA and i'd be afraid that I wouldn't be pleased with the long range accuracy. As of now I use a FN FNAR for deer season and it seems the AR-10 in carbine form would be quite the down grade accuracy wise.

I was faced with the exact same delima a couple of years ago. I decided on the R-25 by remington in 308. Essentially it's just a 20" DPMS. It proved to be emmensly more effective on the hogs, with the added bonus of usually out grouping my buddies bolt guns and always out grouping my buddies gas guns. I think you have the right idea as far as one gun for short and long range. I use the larue quich detach to switch between optics. Eotech for short range hogs and 4200 elite for deer or paper at long range. It excells at both. I'm no expert but I tell everyone who'll listen. Save the money and go with a DPMS.

Yea I was looking at the LR-308B because it about the same price range as the Armalite/Eagle AR-10. The only thing that gets me is they only offer the 18" bull barrel when I am looking for a 20" threaded stainless. I have a YHM Phantom suppressor on the FNAR and the adapter required the bull barrel to be machined and I really don't want to have to do that again.

Just to clarify, you're taking shots at paper, not game, from 700 yards...right? If just for WT deer, the 6.8spc is plenty out to 300 or 400 yrds. I personally wouldn't take a shot at game more than 250 or 300 though.

Yea it would be paper at 700. But I did get a spike buck at 430 this year with the FNAR. The hog issue is why I was second guessing what I wanted.

I wouldn't either. I didn't realize what your plans were. It sounds like you're light years ahead of me. I have plans to move into the suppressed playground but it seems like a big leap. I've been reading up on the hide about the tax stamp and the necessary trust. I have lots of questions but that's a whole other topic. Sorry for the useless suggestion and good luck with the hog extermination.

Keep in mind these guns are a little on the heavy side, so you might want to keep it as light as possible if you're going to be stalking at all.

I have the 16" DPMS version. I absolutely love it, but it's on a diet.

My farm's about 25 miles east of Morgantown, WV. If you're in the area, you're welcome to check out my rifle. That might give you a baseline on what you want. Just don't get any drool on it :^) Also, please don't bring any hogs into the area, the deer are already killing me!

Nahh, not useless lol. They are nicely priced, just don't have the options I want. As far as the tax stamp goes it's not too bad. It did take about 4 months to get it all done but its worth it.

Well the FNAR is about 10 lbs, what are we looking at on average for an AR-10?
Oh and I am in the Eastern Panhandle, all the hogs are down in the southern part. I just want something I can actually take on some bigger hunts. I did go to WVU btw, Morgantown is a fun place haha.

I recommend an Armalite AR10-T carbine length. They come with a 16 inch stainless match barrel. I have done extremely well at targets out to 700 yards with this rifle. The shorter lighter barrel will be nice when you are humping it around the woods, and its MOA or better past 400 yards.

For hog hunting I highly recommend 147gr Military ball FMJ ammo. This gun shoots it every bit as good as the 175 SMK match ammo. The FMJ ammo is devestating on hogs!

I had a 6.5 Grendel. A great target and long range round, but its not much fun throwing Lapua brass into the weeds. 5.56 Green tip rounds work just as well (if not better) on Hogs as the 6.5, and are half the cost.

I'd have suggested that, but sounds like he's wanting something to double for long-range target shooting. Can shoot the cheap Grendel ammo for hogs, good stuff for targets.

So yea just got wind of what my yearly bonus is gonna be. Might have to step up my game to a GAP-10 haha. But yea I think I may just stay with the tried and true Armalite AR-10. The only thing that I have yet to decide is what length barrel I want.

Actually i'm gonna pick up a nice steel target for the long range stuff here soon. But I have every intention on shooting at WT anywhere within 500 yds. Past that, definitely not.

I shoot several ar-10s. I would go with a ar-10 you cannot got wrong. Just get a flattop model and stick a suitable optic and you will be killing swine at ranges out to 1000. If you think you won't shoot past 800 yards I would reccomend the carbine model.

And whoever mentioned that 147gr rounds......they work just fine on swine....drops in one shot. I shoot them all the time with my ar-10a2 carbine with 1980s surplus 147gr fmj. If you want to use a hunting round they will just have bigger holes.

Can't go wrong here. Armalite is top stuff.

We selected the AR-15 platform in 6.5 Grendel over the AR-10 for the same purposes.

Long range target, it spanks the .308.

The downside for hunting is the cost of the brass as mentioned, but I don't see that as a deal breaker.

The platform is lighter, much more flexibility in customization and accessories, and costs less to boot.

And if you want to bang a few hundred rounds of cheap .223 ammo, swap out the upper and have at it...

I just looked that up, the only problem is they say the new uppers will not work with the old lowers. You would have to buy a new rifle to use P mags in an Armalite.

Yea I am getting the A4 model which is the flat top. I may end up getting a carbine in the future though.

Had an LR.308 24" bull barrel. The gun would absolutely stack the rounds. I replaced the trigger which helped a lot. I recently sold it with the plans of building a Ma Ten. I will probably stay with the 24" barrel (Bartlein) for long range. I can't believe the precision of these gas guns. My 15's are quite precise as well. If I was going to hunt hogs with one it would have an 18" barrel as the long guns are heavy. I read about other's mentioning incompatibility and I'm not sure that it makes that much difference. RRA guns will accept a lot of accessories as log as you mate their receivers. Personally I would think you would want to do that anyway. Just do your homework and decide what you want the gun to do. Maybe for hogs a 20" barrel would give you 700 yds, too.

Nice looking quality rig, now you just need a decent optic and its piggy wasting time.

I might add an offset red dot sight for when you are up close and swap out the plastic rail for a quad rail for a light potentially so you can light them up in the AM/PM.

You done good. ARMALITE is never a bad choice.

You must use an AR-10, AR stands for ARMALITE, specific front flip. I can only recommend GG&G's front flip with a standard Troy rear flip. It's the only combos that I have ever bought and mounted on each of my 10s.

I have gone through @ a dozen AR-10s since 1999 and have three at this time (24" 10T, 20" 10T and 20" A4). I've never owned or seen an ARMALITE 10A4 NOT capable of shooting 100yd, 5 shot, sub-3/4" groups with fodder that it liked. All of mine have liked Hornady Custom 150gr SST and Georgia Arms 165gr Precision Plus and my newest 10A4 likes BH 168gr NBT with 3/8" being the norm. Reloads are being developed with my first batch of Lapua brass.

Gas guns are hell on brass and chosing the right FL die and having proper neck tension helps longevity. The Redding Type S Match set #36155 is not a wrong choice, either. Go 0.003" with the correct carbide bushing & good brass and you should be able to forget using a crimp.

Just an FYI, if I was you I would spend the little bit of extra money and buy the AAC over the YHM. I have a .223 YHM can and kinda wish I went with the AAC. The YHM works fine but since you are most likely going to have the supressor for A LONG time, buy the highest quality one you can afford.

I had a RRA lar-8, it was the biggest pos vie ever laid my hands on! It would double feed and jam 4 to 5 times in every magazine! I tried about two dozen different magazines and every factory load under the sun, it just wouldn't run. Sent it back two RR twice, and they couldn't even fix it. They finally just gave me my money back. I now have an LMT, and I love it. Definitely worth a look!

If you go for the suppresor make sure you look at Thunderbeast 30P-1. Just do some reserach on the quality and you will realize its worth every penny. Ever shot I take with my DMR rifle has one of these on it and there is minimal if any poa/poi shift....guess thats since I zeroed both with the can off and on so I would know the real difference.

People stop everywhere I go and want to hear the sound of it. If you have doubts call Zak Smith (a hide supporter) who shoots competitively and wins matches with his cans. He has a ton of knowledge on these things. Cost was $1050 for all Ti can.

I've already got a YHM QD 5.56 can, no complaints so far. I'd like to get a QD can and def thats a good price for a Ti can.
