Ok here is what I have. Rifle came as a Rem 700 tactical .308 with lame hogue stock. Purchased an HS-precision stock for it. I really want bottom metal that I can use detachable mags with. I am fairly new to all these nice rifles like GAP's, etc,etc and would realy love to drop about 4 grand on one but its just not in the cards. Mine shoots sub moa now just want the detachable mag system.

Can you fellow hider's please recommend what type of system would fit my HS stock that would be a drop in replacement? Also if there is a better system that would require minor fitting I would go that route as well.

Also would like to replace the Rem. trigger so some suggestions there as well if have thoughts about it.

Thanks

Re: I want bottom metal!

The HS DBM works great with a flush-fit 3 roung magazine, and it's a drop-in installation in your stock.
Seekins also makes a nice DBM system that uses AI mags, but I don't think it's a drop-in fit.

Lots more available, but those are the only two that I'm familiar with.

Re: I want bottom metal!

Do it right the first time. Send the stock to get inletted properly, about $50-75, and get one of the DBMs that use AICS mags like Badger, Surgeon, Seekins new DBM, CDI, R&D etc.

Don't get the HS just for the drop in. Some work but they are not known for being reliable and the magazines are expensive.

Re: I want bottom metal!

HS has changed their DBM system this year. I was going to buy one of their older systems near the end of last year. When I called to place the order I was told that if I could wait until the first of this year they would be offering a new model. I was told this is the same DBM system developed for the Israeli's and the FBI.

The new model has two anchor points, one on the front and one on the back, instead of just one. The magazine release is located in the same place but it’s a little bigger. The magazines appear to be a little sturdier. They do not offer a flush fit for the Gen II currently.

The SA will have 5 and 10 round magazines. LA will still be 3-4 rounds. They have a DBM with a 7 round extended magazine for 338 Lupua. They are still proprietary and will only work with the new HS system. They will no longer produce the Gen I bottom metal, but will continue to produce the Gen I magazines for some time, but will eventually stop and only produce Gen II magazines.

I have the old system on my HS. Precision 300WM and haven't had any issues, but I have read that others have. My new HS DBM arrived last week and is waiting for me to install it on my 308 when I get home in a few weeks. It is still a "drop in" installation on HS stocks. I was told it would be an easy fit on my McM stock as well. I will let you know if I like it or not.

Re: I want bottom metal!

I would agree to go with a system that uses AI mags. I have always use Badger and have been very happy. It is not a problem to have the stock inletted for any of the systems that Rob01 mentioned.

As for the trigger, Jewell and Timney have always treated me well. I think the Timney is more bang for the buck, but that is just me. The shoe on the trigger can feel a little wide, but it grows on you.

Re: I want bottom metal!

Even though I agree with Rob, if you want to keep cost down, the H&S bottom metal is drop in, and you can get 10 round mags from them or Brownells for it. Randy from RD Precision here on the Hide is offering bottom metal that uses ACSI mags that is great. I just got some, and they work great. They do require inletting though, as they fit the same pattern as the Badger. I hope this helps, and good luck with your project.

Re: I want bottom metal!

IMO, the HS BM system a giant piece if garbage. Nothing but issues. Badger on the other hand makes outstanding products that don't fail and work as advertised. I haven't tried Surgeon yet but plan on it for my next rifle.

Quality is not cheap. But the money us easier to part with when you know it's not being wasted.

Here's a Seekins in a Manners SL.
I cropped it from another picture, so the quality isn't the best.

Re: I want bottom metal!

Badger, Seekins, Surgeon, rd precision(HateCA, on here)....all good. No...great! Check out Randy's mag release latch for M5's....I run a couple of them and they are sweet!

Re: I want bottom metal!

I just had Hooper inlet mine for his bottom metal and it functions perfectly, the inletting looks better than factory, and the price was less than most. It uses the AICS mags that are available everywhere and comes with two different mag release latches. Look into Hooper ordnance before you decide. It is temmpting to just get the HS and not have to do any inletting, but the magazines are expensive and not as reliable.

Re: I want bottom metal!

Thanks for all the info.

Ok the Badger is $329 with a 5 rd mag and the R&D with center latch is $275 with a 10rd mag. Is the badger worth the extra? They look the same to me.

Does R&D do the inletting also? Or who should I sent my stock to have it done?

Thanks
