I want to get into long range shooting

Im about to sell off my .06 for funds toward a new long range rifle. Now i would have just gone with the .30-06 to being with but it would have cost just about the same to the work done to it to bring it up to par.

The only thing i dont have is a ton of start up cash, college kid on a budget and crappy part time job. Im the kinda person who would rather buy once and cry once then to keep buying alright things and never being satisfied. Im torn between the Remington 700 sps and the Savage 10. I know i can get the savage a little cheaper. im getting rid of the stocks either way. I also know they both have quite the selection of aftermarket parts and both are known to be tack drivers.

With in an hour of where i live there is a 1000yd range but that is way way too far for me to try and shoot, the furthest ive shot has been 300yd. but there is a 600yd range in the same state so thats where i want to start. Ive read over the FAQ stickey about long range shooting and the hardest thing for me is probably going to be shooting prone.


Honestly I cannot afford a custom built rifle, and i know there will be limitations and most of those will come from me and that both of these rifles will probably be more accurate than i am as of now.


and im looking at getting the SWFA SS scope.

get an SPS Tactical and drop it into a HS Precision stock or a McMillan if you can afford it. That would be a great start.

Whats the main difference between the sps and the sps tactical? besides the different stock?

im not really worried about the price of the gun per say since the funds will cover a lil over 3/4 of the new gun but i know if i want to get a better scope with variable optics its gonna cost some major bucks

sps tactical has a 20" barrel that is the thicker varmint contour.

You should also look at the classified portion of the site. There are always good deals to be had on rifles. You may be able to find an LTR or 700p for just a touch more than the SPS. That way you can avoid the extra cost of replacing the stock. A lot of times the scope base will come with the rifle as well.

If you are getting started I think the 308 is a great choice. It will give you lots of serviceable barrel life. You will also learn to focus on technique instead of using a hot rod cartridge as a crutch. There are some great projos out there for 30 cal and factory match ammo is abundant.

When I was in your shoes I got a Savage. Looking out for deals, I wound up with the rifle in a bedded bell/Carlson stock, matched Farrell base/rings, harris bipod and a Leupy VXIII LR 4.5-14x50 for right on $1500 complete. Great rifle that took me 5 years before ever considering an upgrade.

Yes, you want either a 223 or a 308, preferably a 308. Only reason to choose 223 is ammo is cheap and barrels last for-ev-er. 308 ammo is twice the price but its a much more realistic caliber, and barrels only last a little less than forever. 308 is also easy to reload and very forgiving.

Just because a range has 1000 yard targets does not mean that is all they have.

Almost all ranges I know of have either targets in closer than their maximum distance or have one set of targets and multiple firing lines at various distances.

You can always take a base action such as a savage or remington 700 further build on it as you go. You've got the right idea starting off with either one of those rifles and changing out the stock. I agree that .308 is the way to go if your starting out. Thats how i'm starting out, or getting there so to speak. Longest i've shot has only been 475yds though. With the .308 though you have great barrel life, tons of data on accurate loads, and plenty of practice. Make sure you get good optics, as you'll want precise tracking for shooting at a distance. Take a look at Zaks entire 3 articles on LR shooting very informative and helpful.

Read.. read.. read.. then when done.. read some more. Magically all your questions will be answered.

You need a bolt rifle with a scope, base and rings in .308. Everything from there is personal preference and $$$.

I've been wanting one of these for months (in .260).
Buds' just sent me an email <span style="font-style: italic">yesterday</span>that they now had them in stock. You can also get it .243 which might be a better choice if you don't handload.

I snoozed- and lost. Already out of stock.
I don't see how you can beat it for the money-<span style="font-style: italic">if</span> you can find one. Target AccuTrigger and H-S Precision stock for under a grand...

I talked to John Kreiger at Shot and he said that in his opinion, Savage is making the most accurate factory rifles right now because of their button rifled barrels. I bought a Remington rifle when I first got into this long range thing, but I lucked out and got a good action and barrel that lasted for awhile before I put a new barrel on it. I think that Savage would be the best way for you to go, especially because people like Scott Mcree at Mcree's precision are making an affordable ($600-$650) chassis stock for Savage actions. Their stock accepts AI mags, which are industry standard for the most part nowadays, and they come in black, green or tan. So that will save a lot of money versus going with an HS, BC, or Mcbros stock because you have to factor in the cost of bedding and new bottom metal (as you'll want that for sure, either now or later on down the road) and the inletting you'll need for it.
