Iam no gunsmith, but does this sound right to you?

I bought an XD about 8 months ago and hadnt been able to get it out until just recently. It shoot WAY, WAY, WAY! to the left, to the point that about 25yds at a 6" target the sights are off the target about 6-8".

So I call SA and this is what I get.

Nice lady at SA: Well sir have you tried adjusting the sights.

Me: no because I bought it brand new, and I dont think I should have to pay for a sight tool to fix the problem.

SA: Hmmmm... well all our techs will do is drift them with a punch and a hammer. Do you have a punch and hammer?

Me: Iam not a gunsmith or anything, but I just dont want to mess with anything then have to send to you guys, just for you to say its my fault.

SA: DO YOU HAVE A PUNCH AND HAMMER?

Me: Ive got a hammer and a vise that would probably ruin the finish on my pistol but no punch.

SA: Well if you get a punch you can drift them yourself.

ME: See the problem is I paid good American dollars for this pistol which is manufactured by SA (i know its not for the sake of argument), which should shoot straight, and it doesnt. I dont feel I should have to spend any more money to make it shoot striaght.

SA: Sir, if you dont want to spend any money for a punch, do you have a screw driver?

Me: CLICK!

I will call back later and hopefully get someone else with half a brain. Weird.

this stuff is not rocket surgery DUDE.....glocks, sigs, colts ...they are all the same....YOU on the other hand need some learning......

I can't imagine why she didn't recommend the proper tool. Some folks do use a punch.

What are you expecting SA to do? Sight adjustment generally isn't considered a problem.

Back when I used to frequent the XD talk forums, we saw this kind of thing all the time. People kept on insisting it was the pistol's fault, but it was their own.

Put it in a shooting vice and shoot the pistol. See if that fixes the problem with the pistol, then work on your own if a problem still remains after that.

thanks for your wise advise on pushing the trigger Boltripper. However that is not the problem.

I guess I need to suck it up then Eddie, Ive never had a problem with any weapon that would need to be sent back. I was unaware that somthing like this would not be considred a problem, thinking about it now seems like it wouldnt be. Now I know, wish she would have told me that instead to use a screw driver as a punch.

Ive had a few other (competent) folks take the wheel, and its the same story. Havent put it in a vise yet, but weve shot off bags with the same result. I will just have to buy a sight tool and quit bitchin.

Oh well win some lose some.

You may want to look into these forums. Fixing a problem that most likely isn't there wouldn't be my first option.

Edit: Looks like this is about the XD-M, not the XD. Sorry for the confusion. Whatever you do, don't hack at it with a screwdriver though, trust me.

Before buying tools, buy a dummy round, have your friend load the mag for you, you fire the mag, when the sear is released on the dummy round you will know FOR SURE if it is you or the pistol, just my .02 and its worth what you paid for it, nothing.

Adjust the sights.

They're made to be adjusted and are not factory zeroed for YOUR particular stance, sight alignment or grip. The factory was thinking of you when those features were incorporated into the design.

I guess we already established that you do not have a punch or a flat-tip screwdriver, so my suggestion is to go to the hardware store and buy a piece of wooden dowel rod. I used a 5/16" piece. (like 30 cents...)

The wood will not damage your finish. Secure your slide in your vice, if you have some crazy jaws then obviously you should clamp the slide in blocks of wood or put something over the jaws to protect your finish...now if you are hitting to the left your rear sight needs to go to the left.

If you eyeball the orientation of your rear sight in the slide you might see that its off center to the right a bit, use a piece of the dowel and your hammer to drift it more to the center. Move a little bit, shoot at the range and see where your POI is now. Don't go all the way to the left before shooting to see how much correction you did.

Once you are done, you can go around and charge people for professional sight adjustment with your professional sight pusher (wooden dowel for 30 cents). Forget those silly $130-200 sight pusher tools.

I got an XDm 40 recently and it was new out of the box 4 or more inches off left at 25 feet or so, me shooting AND in a pistol rest. I have another XDm (9mm) that is spot on from the factory, go figure...other than this the XDm's are my fav's.

I haven't adjusted the sight yet but I have heard that Springfield XD and XDm sight can be a royal pain in the ass to adjust and/or change. Something about them being inordinately tight and next to impossible for the "home" gunsmith to do.

I had someone at the range with a similiar problem on a Kimber - so I kneeled down, both hands, gripped tight, squeezed 3 times and put 3 bullets through the same hole at 15 yards, in the bullseye.

It's likely a shooting thing.


But, I've used a BRASS punch and die to adjust sites - not a big deal - it only takes a MINUTE amount....

I bought a Subaru about 18 months ago and lately its driving really bad. The tires squeal around every turn and Im getting really bad gas mileage. The car pulls really bad to the right.

So I call Subaru and this is what I get.

Su: Hmmmm... well all our techs will do is check the pressure and put air in any underinflated tires. Do you have a bicycle pump?

Me: I am not a mechanic or anything, but I just dont want to mess with anything then have to send to you guys, just for you to say its my fault.

Su: DO YOU HAVE A BICYCLE PUMP?

Me: Ive got a old bicycle pump that would probably take me 45 minutes to find.

Su: Well if you get a pump you can inflate them yourself.

ME: See the problem is I paid good American dollars for this car which is manufactured by Subaru which should drive straight, and it doesnt. I dont feel I should have to spend any more money to make it drive striaght.

Su: Sir, if you dont want to spend any money for a pump, does your neighbor have a pump?

With any issue there is "Cause and effect"
A lot of folks only try to repair the effect, they never seem to find the root problem,....the cause.

In all seriousness, all you dooshbags takin jabs I already said I was being overzealous and should have probably figured it out on my own, however I fucked up made an ass of myself and have the balls to admit it. Most of you probably cruise this forum specifically to try and make people like me feel inferior to make yourself feel more important. I hope you guys are recieving the approval you desperately seek.

if its the sights you should be able to see the problem, when i got my kimber i shot about 3000 rnds through it in 2 weeks and the rear sight started to creep to the left. my smith fixed it in about 2 mins and havent had a problem since. you have to remember i know its depressing to buy something and have a problem and all. but its metal and polymer made by a man, it happens, if you dont want to deal with small issues you pay for it how many guys have had problems with their GAP, wilson combats, les baers, the percentage is much smaller, any gun not hand built will have flaws

I'd check to see if the sights are lined up at the center point of your slide. If they aren't, take a brass punch/sight tool/wooden dowel and push them where they need to be. However, before pushing the sights, I'd recommend removing both and use a little bit of blue loctite in the dovetails. While its still wet, I'd tap the sights in where they need to go (centered).
