I very rarely use my Kestrel for measuring wind these days... I use mirage, feel & sound.
The Kestrel is good for keeping data on hand that you can flick through, test out & tune with hypothetical weather conditions in a unit that's not your phone. Phone apps are great, I just prefer the ruggedness of a Kestrel and keep the phone battery for GPS / long range weather apps / emergencies etc.
Have been using Vortex Fury 5000 AB binos for the last few months with AB ballistic profiles onboard... This is an outstanding piece of gear BUT, you can't get at any information, you can't scroll through data etc. They are very much a lase & look option for data. The LCD screens are also quite rubbish with their large, 888 style text or pre-set text boxes.
The Kestrel is still the best place I find for keeping and accessing data and at this point, still needs to be a key part of the kit list for most types of field shooting.
The Garmin 701 is alright but very annoying and not worth buying IMO. The unit needs more buttons, that are easier to press. The large screen is excellent but the User Interface is annoying, clunky and slow. I carry it sometimes, but mainly for the large, information packed range card, useful for hunting in valleys with known distances within a certain bracket.
Practical application:
For hunting, I mainly use the Vortex Fury 5000AB binos with the profile selected for whatever rifle / caliber is out. Find, lase, look, hold over / dial, fire etc.
If it's a planned shot, the kestrel will come out and I'll verify on the Kestrel and manually input everything for a more refined correction and multiple winds...
I think it is still worthwhile trying to get both a good LRF (priority) and a Kestrel with AB.
