If you were going to rebarrel a Savage model 10fp what company would you go with for the after mkt bbl and why? Its a 308 and I shoot 168 SMK through the gun as a steady diet. Lets say the budget for the barrel is 500 including getting it finished in a matte black.

kreiger, shilen, lilja and many others make good barrels. shilen offer barrels already chambered ready to install.
i know some of the barrel makers and making barrels for the military and their turn around time for a specific chamber/contour could be very long...
you will need to find someone competent to install if you dont want to mess with it. the savage barrel nut is a neat idea, but can be a headache to headspace correctly if doing it by yourself.

there is a part 2 as well. there are also plenty of videos on headspacing too. i bought my wrench on sale from optics planet, $28. got blocks for $8 from sharp shooter supply. you can make these too, if you are decent with wood.
oh yeah, the barrel is about $300 so that leave you plenty to coat it. look for a local place to coat it, or do it yourself. either jim at northland or sharp shooter can mount the barrel and possibly coat it and there are a few smiths here on the site. i am doing mine since i could never get a clear answer on shipping my firearm

changin a savage barrel is easy...get the tools and a gauge. ive got 1 mcgowen 308bbl, and a 338 rum mcgowen on the way. quick turn times, good price, great product. jim @ northland may even have a barrel in stock for ya, check his section over at savage shooters

Send it to Benchmark Barrels they will install one for you $400 and they shoot awesome. they are the best barrels I have shot period. double stress relieved and hand lapped twice. they also can have the whole thing coated cerakote or duracoat your choice.

Kreiger, Bartlein, Brux and some Benchmark barrels are cut rifling. All the others are button rifling. Some beleive cut rifling barrels are superior to the button method. Check to see what the top builders are using.

I suggest Lothar-Walther, based on a pair I have.
Ready to mount; chambered, threaded, crowned, BR-grade bore honing, and recessed crowned, lengths up to 28", about $300 plus shipping, etc.
First rate product. I'd go with the LW-50 stainless and just skip the matte black finish. Otherwise, look into the 'black chrome' finish process as an aftermarket solution.

Other than that, Shilen's pre-chambered blanks ready to thread onto the rifle are probably an excellent way to go. The barrel nut wrench is sold by midway for about 30 bucks, and if you're going to change out the barrel you may as well just get it.
Once you see how easy it is to swap the barrels, getting another one to shoot 243 or 260 or 22-250 is going to be pretty tempting I think.

I have a factory 308 that shoots half to one MOA. Another Savage that I put together with a 223 Mcgowen on it that runs about a half MOA. For my next build / barrel I think I am going to try a Brux. I have heard very good reviews for them, and they are somewhat local to me.

Also, installing / headspacing a Savage style prefit barrel is an easy task to get a near prefect headspace with a Go Gage.
