Hello, I'm looking for a good semi-auto accurate rifle in .308, much like the DPMS LR-308 or Armalite ar-10t. I have quite a few questions that I'm not sure what the answers are.

My budget right now sits at $1400-$1600 for just the rifle.

What would the best choice for a semi-auto .308 be on my budget?

What would you recommend for amunition?

What's the best quality scope and optimal power settings for the scope?

What kind of maximum effective range can I squeeze out of this rifle?

What is the best kind of buttstock for for this kind of rifle?

Oh yes and one more thing, would you recommend a muzzle brake yes or no and what kind?

Thank you for all your input.

Re: I'm looking for a good rifle

That will come when I can afford a .338 Lapua or the big .50. I really want to get a Barret .338 but since I can't afford it right now I'm looking for a good semi-auto .308

Good starting point and "doable" if you shop around.
What would the best choice for a semi-auto .308 be on my budget?
Baseline DPMS LR308 or Remington R25, or find a Armalite AR-10. Both can be found on sale here and there, but I'd look for a used one to stretch the budget.
What would you recommend for amunition?
Depends what you want to do with it. Milsurp ball or Southwest Ammunition "Run and Gun" if on a budget. Many other options if you want higher grade match. Best is to roll your own though.
What's the best quality scope and optimal power settings for the scope?
What do you want to do with it? Does your above budget include the optic too?
What kind of maximum effective range can I squeeze out of this rifle?
Depends on if you care about how hard your bullet hits the target or not. Big difference between shooting paper/steel (800-1000yds) and shooting a deer or other game.
What is the best kind of buttstock for for this kind of rifle?
Again, what do you want to do with it?
Oh yes and one more thing, would you recommend a muzzle brake yes or no and what kind?
Not required, but personal preference. For precision shooting when rapid follow on shots are necessary, yes. Hunting, not really.
Thank you for all your input.

Bottom line, what the heck do you want to do with this rifle?

Re: I'm looking for a good rifle

I'm looking to hunt hogs with a friend. He's got a bolt-action Remington 700 in .308. I'll be using the weapon at ranges greater than 400 yds, and hopefully be handloading my own ammo with him.

Re: I'm looking for a good rifle

I agree, if it's your first rifle and your on that kind of budget, you should look into getting a bolt gun. However, if you are going for the "cool factor" and are set on getting an ar-10, dpms would be a good start. They are comparatively cheap in price for a good product. I have a dpms sass upper that was in the neighborhood of $1200 but that doesn't leave you much left over in for the rest of the weapon. The sass is also a little on the heavy side to be hauling around. There are several great stocks out there but again it depends on use and mostly personal preference. Magpul makes some good ones but you can't go wrong with a good ol' a2 style stock.

Re: I'm looking for a good rifle

sorry I really cant help you with over 400 yd shots on game animals but this gets me to 200 yds on deer and yotes . In my neck of the woods thats about maximum range and the comfortable limit of the optics I have.
I tried all the bells and whistle stuff but in the end I found less is more when it comes to going up the hill, down the hill and through the saw briar and honeysuckle thicket.
The rifle is a rock river a4 with mag-pul handguard , a1 calvary manufacture stock , ergo grip and a leupold cqt mk4 scope.
surplus fal mags run around 14.00-25.00 depending on where you find them and the quality . polymer mags run 20.00 from rock river . I have a couple and they are flawless.
I have 1700.00 in the whole set-up including the optic.

Best Advice yet.

I know this is the Hide and all but come on, he has an AR-15.

If you want a gas gun, get a gasser. My first rifle was an AR-15. That's what I learned to shoot. Bolt and gas guns, especially AR style rifles, handle differently and while some say bolts are easier to shoot, that only applies if that's where you came from. I'll get a bolt gun when I get around to it but AR style rifles are my favorite.

Back to the OP's question, with your budget you're not going to be able to get the other reason why others are saying "get a bolt" because you can't afford a LaRue or GAP. Fine weapons that these are there are great options within your budget. CMMG's SASS available through CDNN has gotten great reviews and may be worth looking at. Something else worth thinking about if you're comfortable building would be to buy a Tactical Machining Lower, a DPMS upper and build your own. You could stay well within you budget while using quality parts ie Rainier Select 308 barrel, Troy TRX 308 rail (DPMS low style). An A2 stock would save a bit of money considering the alternatives but again whatever fits your purposes.

Re: I'm looking for a good rifle

you might also consider a socom 16...admittedly a little heavy but a great rifle with a wide variety of optics. You might also look at a mini30 with some custom work.

this might interest you: https://ambushfirearms.com/

although for 400 yds perhaps you are better suited with a bolt action
