Hi Guys,
I'm going to be shooting out to 1,000 yards next month and unfortunately i won't be able to get my new barrel installed before then . I still have the stock barrel on my remington 700. Heavy varmint barrel 26" 1 in 12 twist with a muzzle brake installed.

Like most 1 in 12 twist rate barrels it shoots 168 gr berger vld very well, but i know i need to step up in weight for a decent thousand yard load . I'm not really in the palma school of thought for longer shots. I have one box of 185 gr VLD and i know there are 175 gr VLD. Do you think that with around 44.5 gr of varget would suffice for either bullet weight to push it out to 1k with halfway decent accuracy .

My COAL is 2.800" mostly because i still have everything factory in terms of barrel, chamber , action etc. I load also for mag length with my AI mags . Seems max for them is around 2.830"

I was able to get around .5 moa with my 168 gr vld handloads , i'm wondering if my twist rate is fast enough to stabilize the heavier round. Luckily i do have a 26 " barrel so that will help a little .

Any suggestions would be appreciated , thanks.

I have a 24 in. 1:12 stock PSS and I do fine with 175 SMKs or 178 A-Max. I don't have a 1000 yd range (600 is my max), but my ballistics programs show me supersonic out to 1100 with my load:

178 A-Max seated 2.186 ogive (Hornady comparator 0.300 datum)
175 SMK seated 2.224 ogive (Hornady comparator 0.300 datum)
44.5 Varget (compressed)
Lapua fire-formed cases
CCI BR2 primers

My ballistics program has back-calculated an FPS of 2620 based on my dope settings (I don't have a chrono).

The A-Max comes out to about 2.885 COAL with that ogive seating and the SMK comes to about 2.805, so the A-Max may not fit your magazine (it fits in my C-Products AI clone).

Good Luck with the 185s. My 700 V really doesn't shoot well with anything over the 175 SMK and very much prefers the 168s. Been thinking about some 150-155s. BUT my plain 700 sps with factory 1 in 10, 24in will shoot 185s.

With 1:12 you really should try 155 gr bullets. I have very good luck with the 155 gr Hornady A-Max out to 1K.

Don’t discount the Berger 168 VLD, it has the same BC as the 175 SMK and can be launched usually about 50-75 fps faster than the 175. That is my hunting bullet in my Rem Tactical and it has shoot well at the 1000 yard line on steel in my short 20" barrel.

With Varget and Winchester brass top nodes tend to be 155=46.5-47g, 168=45.5-46g and 175=44.5-45g there is also a lower node ~ 1 grain less. If using Lapua brass drop back another .5-.4 grains.

FWIW,
If you shoot 175 FGMM and good copy is 43-43.2 grain varget in winchester brass.

Remember lots of Varget have been known to very and chambers do as well.

That said...
A good load in my Rem Varmint (factory 26") with the 155 scenar was right around 46.8 loaded to 2.825 OAL in Winchester brass and gave me 2875ish.

1k isn't easy. Do you have the right optics to give you enough dope? How far can you hit accurately. My suggestion would be the 155 scenar with 2000 mr. It will have them FLYING. Get two lots of brass, 2 lots of bullets, and 2#'s of the 2000 mr. All lots being the same ofcourse. Play with it with how ever many it takes to getting 1/2 moa atleast. Chrony it, jbm it, and go to work. I am pushing the 185 vlds out of a 22" .308 crusader at over 2700 fps and I'm loading light. No telling how fast it will push the 155's. Also the 178 bthp hornady is something to consider. Sectional density plays a very large part of getting that extra push at distance and it's got it. I typically used varget but 2000 mr trumps it on velocity. Some guys will agree some won't. Just thought I'd give you something to consider. The 175 smks have put me on at 1k many times but there were too many variables like arch and tumbling. The 155's will shoot flatter and if you can get it up to 2900 fps that .508 bc will help alot with wind if the are properly stabilized. Hope this helps. GG late for church !

As adjustable dope i think i'm ok. I have a 20 moa base with a vortex viper pst 2-24x 50mm .

I can reliably hit steel out to 600 yards , i just haven't had to deal with anything farther then that , and i'm worried about the 168 gr vld not having the momentum to keep them from tumbling at 1k yards .

I think i'm going to try out the 175 gr VLD and the 155 gr scenar and see how my rifle likes em.

I'm using federal gmm brass from once fired gold medal 168 gr smk federal premium. I know they tend to be a little softer , but for cost purposes that's what i'm using right now .

So i jumped on my ballistic calc.....

it seems that if i can get the 175 berger VLD up to 2700 fps at the muzzle i should be about 100 fps higher then the sound barrier at 1k yards . Is breaking the subsonic barrier usually what causes rounds to tumble ? Meaning is that usually the point at which a round becomes more effected by air friction and unstable ?

Yes, bullets when go into subsonic transition tend to start waddling like a badly thrown football. Not all though.... Not sure but I think the new bergers are supposed to stay stable subsonic. The worst I've seen at 1k are the 175 smks. I had a bullet hit an ar500 plate completely sideways.

What did your chrono say ? what muzzle vel are you getting from the 44gr

I would get a lb of CFE223, youll get the most speed from that powder, no doubt.

Sure it wasn't a 168smk? I shoot the 175s and don't have that problem with them @ longer ranges even with lower muzzle velocites ala 2550fps. Group was 3' wide but no keyholes on paper.

To be safe you want around 2650fps with a 175 or similar bullet. Many people can get near this with a 24" barrel and factory ammo like FGMM175.

I am not too familiar with the 168vld but if your load is near max for your brass and primer but still reasonably accurate I would bet on it being okay.

If you want canned loads, 44.6 varget 175smk win brass 2.8" is one many guys suggest at my range. 45 is generally a little better but not every rifle can take it.

47.5 2000MR 175SMK win brass is what I use, I don't shoot at 1k often at all but it gets there just fine out of my 20" rem LTR.

2677, 10 ft out of a 24 inch barrel.
