I didn’t really know where to post this but I currently have a PVA 18” Remington Varmint barrel in 6.5 creed on my Impact Action. It is a great barrel but I want to lighten up a bit for hunting (I’m not competitively shooting) My thought is to go with a Proof prefit they are now offering for Impacts but don’t know how much weight I would save on a 6.5 creed 22” Proof Sendero which weighs 3 lbs vs the 18” I have right now. I’m also considering switching calibers to the 20” .308 1/10 which weighs 2 lbs 11 oz. So I guess weight savings would be my biggest thing and switching calibers would be due to barrel life and ease of getting ammo. Please can I get some insight from you guys? Rifle specs below. Thank you.

Impact action
18” Remington Varmint 6.5 creed
Manners EH1a
S&B US 3-20 Spuhr mount

  1. There’s very little reason to go to 308 over 6.5CM when hunting in the US with factory ammo.
  2. Sending your varmint barrel to LRI for beehive fluting will take off more weight and cost less.
All that said I have a 28” proof barrel in 6.5CM on my Nucleus hunting build.

Thank you for the reply saving $$ is not part of the decision or should I say factor. I’m trying to save weight and gain performance. But if the fluting saves that much weight I might consider it.

Chads fluting is pretty tits but you aren't going to see a massive drop in weight with that barrel contour/length. It will probably be about equal to a proof. His new stuff is not cheap either.

I was in a similar predicament recently. I just commissioned Altus to build a light weight rig for me and Moon at Crescent customs is putting my wifes rig on a diet currently as well. Both are proof barrel Ti actions with manners elite stocks. No more double digit weight rifles for us.

A barrel weight calculator on pac-nor says 18” Varmint is about 3.75 lbs. so I would definitely be losing some weight going to a proof. The 22” proof is 2 lbs 14 oz and 24” is 3 lbs; so do you think the extra 2 ounces on the 24” is a major gain in performance or weight?
Also what scopes are mounted on yours? I think that is where a lot of my weight is and was thinking of going with s&b Klassik and spuhr hunting mount which will save about another lb. thank you for your reply and help.

Proof in the sendero light is your ticket,it will be a better fit in your stock also.
The sendero is closer to a m24 contour and will not fit in your stock without opening it up a heap.

Only prefit is for Sendero contour for Impacts.Luckily I bought a stock off Altus and the inlet is for Proof Sendero already

We currently have these two for hunting.

Wife:
Evo Ti action
Proof Sendero @22"
6 CM
EH1 with ultra light cheek riser
Hawkins DBM
modular evo carbonfiber bipod
Near manu. Alpha mount
Razor AMG

Mine: currently being finished by Altus, we weighed all my parts and it will be a touch under 10lbs on the shoulder.
Impact Titan
18" proof sendero
6.5 CM
CS-1 with cheek riser and mini chassis
Tier One carbonfiber bipod
Aadland rings
Razor AMG

I do not think the extra 2" is worth it, but to me it is not a weight thing. It is a OAL thing, that is why my rifle is so short.

@Sprayed99 thank you for the detailed reply. Those are two really nice setups! Let us know how you like that Ti Impact action. I am still also considering going with the 20” .308 because I haven’t really had any major arguments against it for a hunting rig, which shots will mostly be within 400 yds.

If you will never shoot out past 800 I'd even consider 16.5"
