Early 90s Caprices, and mid 70s Monacos were the cream of the crop of fleet cars.

Veer - I drove an early 90's caprice, worst POS I've ever driven!

Brakes heated up way too fast, steering SUCKED, and seeing out the rear view was near impossible with the rear lights.

The best patrol car we had was the 82 Impala, Oh yeah...350 chevy and it just RAN!

I'll agree with you on the late 70s to early 80s Impalas (good power, a great weight/power ratio and well-balanced), but I've got a strong nostalgic bond to a certain '94 Caprice. The 360s and the 440s from Mopar were the shit, though, back in the day.

Re: Impala and Crown Vic = Old & Busted

Ugliest but fastest we had was 92 Caprice. Had Corvette motor/trany. Second gear scratch anytime. Interior was total crap.

Re: Impala and Crown Vic = Old & Busted

My best beat cars were a 1980 Impala with a 350 4bbl and posi-trac rear end, and a 92 Crown Vic. both handled great and would go anywhere.

oh, the irony. I've a '92 Grand Marquis LS that was built as a police car, but not used as one. It has the cloth electric seats and all the fancy interior. We liked that car so much, that we bought ourselves a newer one.

It isn't geared the same, and definitely doesn't have the same suspension and steering components. Massive difference between the two cars, for sure. Plus a 40ish horsepower difference.

Been for sale for about 3 months now. (the '92)

Re: Impala and Crown Vic = Old & Busted

Hay MAGGOT they sure do, Had one pass me on I64 last week, thought i was in reverse. Was at night and had a lot of lights. I thought it was an ammo barge coming into port.

Re: Impala and Crown Vic = Old & Busted

We have Tahoe's and Expeditions (long winters, lots of snow, 50 percent unpaved roads...) They are tanks.

Of course, we weren't always so lucky. Once upon a time, we had Dodge Diplomats and, yes, Chevy Citations. Really. Citations.

But if they made these in AWD... they would be the greatest thing since the Bluesmobile and its 440 inch four-barrel.

Re: Impala and Crown Vic = Old & Busted

Just drove the new Caprice and it is pretty sweet. It is going to the local PD here. V8 independent rear suspension police handling package. Runs REAL good. Won't touch a superbike but they run a lot better than the Crown Vics and will tear up most of the trash can exhaust go karts out there.

Just found out that's what we're switching to. We've got 60 something crown vics left in inventory and then we're getting the Caprice's.

You forget those old bias ply burnout tires didn't you? In a real pursuit that involves at least one turn and some form of comfort you would jump into this in a heartbeat.

Yeah, our city's department just got one... almost snapped my neck looking at it!

Looks like a bigger version of a cobalt... with a nasty engine! lol
