I'm new to reloading for the 300 WM. I have read that the military uses H1000 in their loads. I assume that is for velocity and temperature stability. While I have some H1000, I can't seem to locate any more. There is plenty of 7828 and 7828SSC available. How does this powder compare in terms of velocity and temperature stability? Bullets I'll be using are SMK 190, SMK 220, AMAX 208.

Ssc= SUPER SHORT CUT. They do this so it meters better. Although it burns the same as regular 7828. 7828 is known to be a bit temp sensitive but it works pretty good for the bigger bullets like the 220 smk. It will give you a good bit more speed. H1000 is just an all around good powder. It won't push the big bullets as fast as 7828 but its good for any size bullet and an "extreme" powder. For your bullet choices id go with h1000. For the 208 start at 75 grains and work your way up.
I couldn't find much info about 7828 either, but I did notice in my Berger vol.1 that 7828 was listed for many bullet weights, pushed the bullets faster than all but Retumbo, and case capacity was around 93-95% with the ssc in the .300WM.
I couldn't find H1000 either so I bought 16 pounds of 7828ssc when I found it. I hope it works for my .300 / 7-300 WM switchbarrel being built.....

I load the 7828 ssc in my WBY.300 with the 208 AMAX. I didn't have any h-1000 and I thought I could get more velocity with it. It is super accurate and easy to load for.
I developed 2 -105 bthp loads for my wife's .243, one using h-1000 an the other 7828ssc. The 7828 is a bit more accurate (.3-.4's) and the h-1000 (.4-.5's). Both are going around 3050fps and both are accurate. I don't believe all the hype with temp sensitivity. I guess I'll find out this summer

7828SSC is a very under rated powder.

I have several loads for the 300 win mag. And both of those powders that i load for several 300 win mags and they shoot very well in just about every rifle i try them they are ocw's. i use 7828 and h1000 with 180 gr., and 210 gr bergers. My next test is with h1000 and 230 gr bergers. P.M. Me if you would like details on loads.

SW VA. Walmart near me always has a few lbs. Can't get some other powders I really want though (H4350) but that's another story.
Same boat here. Tons of 7828 available. Building loads for 208amax in savage 110 hs with 24inch barrel. I see lots of history with h1000 but not so much with 7828. But the little I do see is positive. Time to buck the trend?
The only thing about either of these two powders & 300WM is that a pound just makes you want more. Not many rounds per pound. I burn Retumbo with heavy 230 Bergers and it is great but would burn H1000 with lighter. IMR7828 is slightly faster than H1000 and is more temp sensitive.
Couldn't have said it better. 91 rounds per 1 pound of Retumbo with the 230 Berger average. Shooting the 215 or 200 is LESS by 10-15 rounds. That's why I stick with the 8 #'s or alot of 1# same lot cans. So 7,000x8/76.5 =732 rounds of 230'bergers per 8#'s. If it were a .308 with 45 grains it'd be 1,245 rounds per 8#'s. that's a pretty BIG difference. I guess it beats the hell out of a .338 Lapua running 90 grains of Retumbo getting about 115 less loads per 8#'s!
They’re all over Gun Broker, along with retumbo for fake prices . Saw 8lbs of H1000 go for over $700

I have 2# Ratumbo but thats being used for my 6.5-284 Norma that I just rebarreled and already have good loads for. Just needs fine tuning.
For the 300WM its a different story.
I was able to get 2# 7828ssc and feel like I wasted 1#.
I was able to puck up a pound of H1000 at lgs but haven't used any yet as far as testing.
Another problem is selecting brass!
With the 7828ssc I was able to get really high velocities at about 3 gn less than book max mostly do to available brass?
Now I'm going to try H1000.
Feels like a crapshoot at this point in time! To many variances to deal with.
Think I'll just pick a middle charge and go with it and just tune seating depth?
Maybe I'll have enough powder when I get done to load 10 good rounds to hunt with this fall!
Or just bag it and go with my proven 6.5-284.

It’s pretty difficult for sure. I’ve been snatching up powder that are in the vicinity of H100. I have probably 20lbs of the 7828ssc. Grabbed 8lbs of RE23 yesterday and some of this IMR4955 which is “supposed” to be equivalent to H4831.
