IMR 8208 XBR

Re: IMR 8208 XBR

finally got to try imr 8208, 175 smk's. done a quick velocity and pressure test right before work, so i got more testing to do. 20" savage, mcmillan a-5, remember, i'm not the best shot nor claim to be.
lake city lr brass, cci br-2, load touching lands @ 2.886.
41.2 gr-2616 fps
41.5 gr-2661 fps
41.8 gr-2661 fps
42.1 gr-2672 fps
42.4 gr-2690 fps
went inside and loaded three more rounds
42.7 gr-2687 fps
43.0 gr-2702 fps
43.3 gr-2758 fps...seemed hot, little sticky, primer looked good.

Re: IMR 8208 XBR

Anyone load .223 (for an AR) with 77gr SMK's with this powder? I just loaded some with AA2520 (23.7gr to start) I haven't had a chance to test them yet. I'd like to try a few other powders and 8208 XBR is next on my list.

Re: IMR 8208 XBR

I gave so IMR 8208xbr to some friends, they both are very knowledge about reloading and both are very good riflemen.

THIS IN A .223 BOLT GUN
223 Ladder test .2g steps, 300yards, 80g berger vld, Lapua brass, Wolf Magnums, Krieger 1:7.7 @ 29", 7mph full value wind from 3oclock, 5 shots each from bipod

grains---avg fps---group size----notes

24.20 2932 2.25" 1.6"vert

24.40 2960 2.5" 1.6"vert

24.60 2992 2.8" 2" vert

24.80 3003 1.7" 1.1"vert - clear winner, 3 shots in 0.4"

25.00 3012 2.7" 1.4"vert

no pressure signs at all, could probably go to 3050fps if needed

my version of QuickLoad software does not have IMR 8208, but some of the forum board junkies have said to use ADI AR2206H powder for the specs...it does come out fairly close.

308 test was 45.30g with 155.5g Berger FullBore. 27" 1:12 Hart bbl, 300 yards off bipod

2953fps avg, main group was 1.9", vertical was .58" !! No pressure signs.

Cant wait to try this with some 175/185 Bergers.

Re: IMR 8208 XBR

Got the load chrony'd with Alpha Master in my wife's Savage 12 LRPV w/factory 24" barrel w/ 1:9 twist in a McMillan A2 stock off the bipod and rear sand bag.
23.8 g XBR over BR4 primer
New Nosler brass with nothing done to prep it.
75g A-MAX

2901 average. 8 SD over 25 shots.

No pressure signs. I haven't chronied my a-max 25.6 varget load but iirc, backwards from my mil to 600 put me at 2715fps.

Pretty promising stuff. Still pretty windy out but 5 shot groups were in the 2s to low 4s with new nosler brass. Could have been mostly two's and teens if I had a sled or front rest instead of the bi-pod with the noslers.

UP{DATE: Ran new unprepped other that VLD chamfer tool Lapua brass (100 pcs from 95.2 to 95.7 weight, very impressed with OAL too unlike the nosler which appears to be trimmed to get the weights uniform, the whole lot was under the min 1.750 and had much more deviation. Better sticking with buying 6x more Lake City and sorting it into 2 batches of 150-200 and smaller batches for flyers and plinking ammo or setting up for an AR) and those groups shrunk to teens on the wide end. 20 covered with a dime cooling off with each 5 shot string (50 total, 25 at steel at 600 and 775), off the bipod with the swivel tightened and off of bags like with the nosler. My daughter loved shooting an eight inch steel target at 775

I am very impressed with the no pressure signs going into the 24s with the 80 bergers and no signs.

Good stuff.

Re: IMR 8208 XBR

I finally load using this powder. So far getting good results. I going to shoot it more tomorrow at 600 yards. here is my results so far.

Hi ADI AR2206H is repachaged there int he US by Hodgdon as H4895 it is the same powder.
If that helps you out with starting data i think that 8208 is close in burn rates also made here in Australia by ADI but it has a lot smaler grain size.

Re: IMR 8208 XBR

Shot today at 600 yards. I switch primers to FG210 and the load to 45.5 grs. It shot 6 under a 1/2 moa and 6 under 1 moa. I think will stick with this load. My come ups was 10.75.
I think the FG210 primers worked best VS. the BR2s.

Re: IMR 8208 XBR

Good shooting....do you rate 45.5 as near max? Also how much room is left in the case with that charge?....I'm using 45.5grs of Varget and it comes up to just below the neck/shoulder junction using a drop tube. My velocity is 2950 with two different barrels, a Krieger and a Bartlein, both are 26" 1-11".

Non moly...forgot to add..

Re: IMR 8208 XBR

I ran it up to 46.5 grs with no issues but the load preform better around 45.5 grs (moly bullets). It is just below into the shoulder area. My chrono is broke. The wind here blew it over yesterday and broke the arm. I would assume it would be around 2950 to 3000 fps.

I not a big fan of moly but thought I would try it. I don't think I have added anything by doing this. I will shoot these up and go back to naked bullets.

Re: IMR 8208 XBR

Badger M2008 .308
AICS 2.0
10 twist match barrel 20" end to end

Black Hills Brass
FGMM primers
155gr Lapua
8208 XBR
2.86 OAL

started with 45.5 grains 2950fps plunger mark bolt lift easy money primers little flat

Dropped to 45.3 grains 2930's pressures signs decreasing

Dropped to 45.0 grains 29teens still decreasing

Dropped to 44.5 grains 2860's all good

Upped to 44.7 grains 2885 all good

It shot about 3/4 MOA at 100 (slightly disappointed but the rig and all its parts are new so will keep firing and see when thing settle in)

Took a few shots at 300,500,600, and 700 no real data to work from basically flying blind and wind was sporadic at 5-15 full value but got first round hits at 600 and 700 off computer generated numbers. (after burned a few at 500 getting the wind call)

I am going to move the bullet in and out 2.84 and 2.88 next trip to range, if groups improve then I'll recheck velocity and may adjust accordingly, but really I could care less on fps as long as I'm over 2850.

Would have been nice to play in the 2900's

I really like this powder it will replace my IMR 3031!

Re: IMR 8208 XBR

Try seating the bullets out a little farther should help with the pressure. If you switch to moly 155s it marrys up nice. Mine are around 3100 with moly and 13 twist barrel 30". At 1000 yards Moa 27 and 600 yards 11. This is the load my son shot his National Junior Record FTR 600 yards.
