Rifle Scopes In need of some help deciding on a scope.

My issue is that I am waiting on a rifle to come in (savage 10tr) and its making me bounce between scopes.
The two choices I've come up with it the fixed 10x42 swfa ss or the 3-15x42 ss . The variable is 300 dollars more.
The rifle will be used within 200 yards until the 300 yard is built or until I find a longer range in Florida near me. I am also tossing the idea around to start hog hunting. I also plan to suppress it which makes me want to save some money and buy the fixed scope, but I don't want to limit myself for that reason. I am beginning to think that the variable power would be the better choice. Any insight on this would be much appreciated.

If your going to hunt with a FFP, I recommend you get something that is variable power, and illuminated.

I think I would go with the 3-15 if it were me. I like the fixed power scopes but I don't like them for hunting. This is only because your environment could change quickly. We do a little hog hunting here in Texas. While it is nice to be able to reach out and grab one, we have hunted at close range from a blind and a 10 power would be hard to use. Id go with the variable power scope.

That's what I was thinking. That's extra magnification won't be bad either. I guess the extra 300 isn't too badof a price tag if I could use it more than one way

I have fixed 10 and 3-15 SS and the low end magnification is the big advantage of the 3-15 to me. 10x is a little much for many applications and makes the scope a lot less versatile. I would probably buy the fixed 6x if I were to do it again unless it were to be used on a rifle dedicated to target shooting.

Most likely it will be used at a range more. I would like to do some occasional hunting. As much as possible but I really don't know how often that will be. How is the 3-15 at 15 magnification? Still pretty clear?

In IMO only, if you're expected distances are only going to be 100yd, 200yd, or maybe a little longer later on, then variable with a max 10x magnification should handle all of your needs. The money it would cost to move up to a 15x variable could be money better used towards the suppressor.

The thing about scopes is that it they are entirely user preference based. What kind of scope is best for one person may not be for the other. Don't get me wrong, asking questions about other people's experience is very important. Make the most informed decision you can but getting out there and doing it is the best way to find what fits your needs.

That's what I was thinking. I most likely only need to 10. I would like to have at least 10xs. I want to do it right the first time and not get a scope that isn't enough. They have the 3-9 power but the 3-15 is not a big enough difference to go with that instead (only 100) Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it. I would love to do longer range shooting once I find somewhere that I can. Researching that also. Do you have any recommendations on any other scopes that are variable? I am looking for open turrets. I am not set on the as scopes but they seem great for the money.

If I wasn't planning to hunt with it (which I am still figuring out) I would get the fixed 10. But the higher magnification may also come in handy searching for shot holes. If I had the rifle then I would just buy a scope. But waiting on it is making my brain go crazy thinking what I want to do with it haha

BTW: I'm getting the SWFA 3-15 for my new Grendel upper. I have the SWFA 12X scopes for my 2 LR bolt rifles that I shoot out to 1200 yards.

Let us know where you are. There are a few good ranges with longer positions here in Florida. In fact there are some great ranges here if you're in the right place.

Phew, yeah they nail you on price at SWFA with the variable power scopes, but I would go with the variable power, as you will want the 4x for hunting(especially hogs as they can be nasty creatures), and the 15x for the range. I was at the Sebastian range last weekend at 200yds. I keep my scope pegged at 16x, even at 100 yards. I like to be right up on the target, but that's just me.

You know what though...for 300 bucks, I would go with the SS fixed power. I've heard nothing but great things about it. 10 probably isn't too high power for hunting, and will get you out to quite a few hundred meters.

Johnny, I shoot the Sebastian gun range also. Also kicking around the idea of hog hunting(Not with the Rem 700, I have other guns for the task). Don't want to pay a guide either. If you are interested in hunting, let me know. I don't know jack about it...and my friends don't either. Not to mention they are not armed like I am lol. At any rate...are they going to build a 300 yard? That's my next step.

I have been getting some good info on hog hunting from a few friends. I will be making some phone calls this week to explore more into it.

Well, I don't know all the ranges in Florida, but the two closest to you are still a bit of a drive. There is Manatee Gun Club in Myakka City that has positions out to 1000 yds. It is a private range but public can shoot for $20.

I shoot at Volusia County Gun and Hunt Club in Volusia County off SR44. It has up to 300 yds available to any member or member's guest ($10 fee for guest) and a precision long range area 100-1000 yds. that is quite restricted, even to members and requires qualification to shoot there.

Of course, if you find yourself in the panhandle, there's always K&M Shooting Center, a premier long range course by any standard. I do not believe that they are open to the public, but the do take memberships. I've yet to shoot there, but hope to take one of their Precision Rifle courses one day.

Malabar has a 600 yd range. Port Malabar Rifle and Pistol Club

I belong to Volusia County Gun&Hunt Club. As mentioned we have a long range (sub) club that shoots on the adjacent property. We currently have platforms at 600/800/1000 yards and we are planning to extend out to 1200 yards soon. The long range group is open to VCGHC members and non members. We conduct matches on the weekends and practice/qualifying sessions once/twice per month (mostly on Mondays). Non members are welcome to participate in matches/practices/qualifying sessions. We had a qualifying/practice yesterday and I qualified my new Grendel out to 1000 yds. The next practice session is scheduled for Monday Jan 27. IM me if you would like contact information for the long range club directors.

That port malabar seems like a pain to join. And they make you join the NRA. Seems pretty restricted and controlled. I could be wrong though. How is the volusia? What does it take to get in there.

Yes please keep me posted on what you find out about hunting around here. I myself would rather hunt traditionally, than have to pay to walk up on a pig at a feeder and blow its brains out.
