Rifle Competition Events Inaugural PRS Match - Quantico Shooting Club

For those interested, QSC will be holding monthly PRS matches. Our first was this past Saturday on Range 4, the 1,000y range. We had firing lines at the 800 and 1,000 yard lines, each with 5 stages. Despite the rain and cold, we had a full match with a wait list!

Overall, we (Quantico Shooting Club) felt the match was a huge success. The match was challenging, we had overwhelmingly positive responses from the shooters and we now have a local PRS match for those who used to have to drive hours to shoot.

We had Marines out with their A6 and A4s, and a variety of gas and bolt guns on the line (distinct mention to the 300WM shooter - ouch). A special thanks to Team AI who came out in force (and with the new AT-X), the local pro and semi-pro shooters and all those who took the time to shoot, mentor, coach and make this first event not only fun, but a value to the shooting community!

QSC is slightly farther away than Peacemaker for me. But, I haven't seen any matches announced at Peacemaker yet, so looks like QSC is the option for now. Hopefully Peacemaker gets its act together and offers some matches this year.

Definitely a plus to have another quality option in the area.

We're planning matches for the last Saturday of each month. We may have to move the schedule once and a while, but that's the plan for now. Practiscore registration for the next match opens the 5th. We also want to keep the costs down, hoping to stay at $50.

I'm 64 and have the same concerns. Our PRS matches will not be movement centric or running an obstacle course before you take your position and your shots.

Range 4 is 150y wide, but it's still a square range with left and right limits. As such, we design the courses of fire to accommodate the range limits. You may have to take 5-6 steps from the start line to a shooting position, but the dynamic is positional shooting. You need to build a stable position to remain on target, be able to spot your shots to make adjustments, manage your trigger to score hits and of course, know your rifle, ammo and DOPE.

Those without a current DoD affiliation or the proper entry credentials cannot access Marine Corps Base Quantico. On the day of a match, we have already provided entry lists to the visitor's center and gates so our competitors can enter MCBQ. We also have people ready to escort competitors if something goes aryne.

Ah, that's kind of what I thought....not DOD nor on the competitors list then no entry. Damn, its almost worth paying the fee just to get on the entry list and see what's what with this competition.

If their match is like the few PRS club matches I've been to, you will get all the help you'll need to get your bearings and navigate through the day.

Hello my friend....that well may be the thing to do. I have no idea even where to start aside from show up with gun, ammo, and a couple of bags. But I have heard the same many times...that is, competitors, MD's, RO's, are more than willing to help the new person.

I really would kind of like to give it a try. I can't kneel by sitting on one foot (like a common NRA high power kneel) cause my knees just won't do it. But what I saw in the vids on the tank trap and floating platform seem doable to me.

Showing up with rifle, ammo, and dope is really all there is to it. Just tell them this is your first rodeo when you register at arrival.

The good thing about this kind of positional shooting is that you have much more freedom to build your shooting position than you do in the traditional sense.

Fees are $50.

We will do everything possible to assist new shooters or those who need assistance. We want the match to be competitive, but to remain fun. The point is to draw more people to the shooting sports, not drive them away with a-hole shitake. And on that point, we've spent the last year kicking the clowns out of the treehouse. We gained 300 new members last year, so I'll take that as affirmation quality and professionalism are appreciated. /Rant Off

Okay, back to the point, I've included additional stage pictures as almost each stage requires 2 - 5 different positions. You have to attain 10 hits, across those positions in the allotted time, which is 90 or so seconds (more on some more complicated stages). I'm not trying to dissuade you, but you should look up PRS and understand the rules, the pace of the event, how you squad with other shooters, etc., etc. I do not suggest you simply show up to shoot without doing some homework, because you'll slow the squads and event.

The shooters will go out of their way to try and mentor other shooters. The AI Team was all over that giving advice to other shooters.

Included is a pic of Matt Gervais from Team AI helping another shooter with advice on how to better his position and feedback on his stage performance. That's exactly how we want our matches to be: fun, informative and affordable.

dude, it's only fifty bucks. sign up and give it a try. at worst, if you aren't doing good and/or feel you are holding up the squad, then just stop and spectate (or run timer, spotter, etc). get there an hour early, let them know you're the new guy and you'll have no shortage of folks trying to get you up to speed quick. you'll need to have an actual chrono for your load and drop that and relevant data (bullet weight, ballistic coefficient, etc) in a ballistics program to get you your theoretical drops out to 1000 yds. preferably in 25 if not down to 5 yd increments. print it out and bring it with you, or get an app for your phone ($10 for the 'shooter' app is what i use). make sure you know how to hold and also to dial on your scope. generally you'll dial for the first target, let's say 750 yds, before you come to the line. then you'll hold for the other targets in that stage, for example 700, 800, etc after you hit that first target. you don't even need to have/bring any gear. most everyone will be happy to loan you their bags etc. i haven't met anyone yet at any match that was happy they just spectated, nor anyone that was pissed they brought their gear and jumped in.

We are actually testing a belly concept this Sunday on R4. We're going to place targets at 300y and forward to test sight lines and shooting "corridors" as we're limited to the right range limit when we do something like this during normal club operations.

As a reminder, registration for the next match opens tomorrow. I think there's a War Rifles match in PA on the same day, so it will be interesting to see how signups go.

I shot PNTC's belly matches for a year before I signed up for my first PRS match. Those types of matches are fun, and good practice for new shooters.

One will quickly learn, however, that you cannot practice on your belly and expect to do well at a PRS match....

April is filling up, looks like May could be an issue as the Navy has scheduled a bullseye match on comp pistol that takes away our ability to place steel forward of the 500y line (surface danger zone restrictions). Anyways, we'll know more at the April match.

Had a great time at this match. It was run very well and smoothly. Will definitely be back. 10 stages complete just after 3 is pretty good. Especially considering there were a number of new shooters in my squad.

Sorry to have to announce that, due to range conflicts with Navy usage, we're forced to cancel the May and June PRS Centerfire Matches. We'll be back up and running in July. Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause but these are active duty ranges and they have priority.
