The INOD - Block III... All I can say is WOW.
It's taken me a while to track down the public specs of this - and I don't know whether this has been released before, but the INOD, AKA the IMPROVED NIGHT/DAY FIRE CONTROL/OBSERVATION DEVICE ( INOD is so much easier ) is the latest Clip-On and the specs have me absolutely gobsmacked. With this device, I think the US just leapfrogged the rest of the world by about a decade!
The INOD was originally developed way back in 2009 for SOF use, but the technology specs were locked up... This masterpiece of night vision technology is clearly an example of the very best digital fusion and combines Vis/SWIR with MWIR/LWIR capabilities for completely multispectral performance. It sees heat, it sees light and it sees skyglow. Better still, it can see a fart at 2000m and has enough accuracy to put a bullet through it to!
With 1MOA accuracy ( min ) these have been designed as a clip-on for use at 800m min ( 2000m target ) and optimised for 15x dayscope use, with expected zoom capability of up to 25x ! ( Min 5x ) and is intended to replace the AN/PVS-19, the AN/PVS-22 and the AN/PVS-26!
Not only that, but it features ACTIVE illumination modes that CANNOT BE SEEN BY ANY GEN2 or GEN3 scopes, even within 5m of the INOD. ( And of course, it works passive too ! )
But wait, it gets better.
The INOD has an integrated out-of-band rangefinder capable of detecting the range to a man-sized target 2 kilometers away and compass, and the compass accuracy is +/- 1 mil.
It can power-up from standby in 5 seconds and you can change batteries while the thing is operating and on-target!
It uses any common small batteries! ( And runs for 6 hours straight on them! )
You can plug it into your car cigarette lighter socket ( or some other external power source ! )
It's Waterproof!
It handles 50-Cal. ( In fact, max shock = 4000 G's )
It can tell the difference between a man and an animal at over 800m on thermal!
The objective is to be able to distinguish between a man holding a weapon and an unarmed man at 2000m !
Seriously, I had to hold back on the exclamation marks there.
Overall, some really incredible tech. Seriously, this is remarkable. Even with the lights on, Gen3 cannot see it at all beyond 5m away. Even when an enemy has night vision and is lit up by the illuminators they will not know because it's all out of band.
Well, I am majorly impressed with this stuff. When can you buy it? No idea. Vic, please let us all know when you're selling it
And though I fear it may be years away before it's even widely deployed with regular forces, I would love to hear some first-hand accounts of this fantastic CNVD.
Regards
David
