Interested in a Savage 110BA - good starter rifle?

So I'm looking to start my foray in the longer distance shooting. My current rifle is a (don't laugh) plain Remington 700 in 30.06 with a cheap Tasco 4x16x40. I've been getting decent groups out to 300 yards but I want to take a step into the real world and shoot out to 500 or more and get some good optics to go with it.

I've been looking around and I hear good things about the Savage. I'd like it in 300WM as ammo can be had quite cheaply and I don't reload rifle yet. Down the road I might go .338 and reload but I like to stake this a step at a time.

I've also see a few gently used ones in around the 2K mark. Is this too much for used as I can get it new for roughly the same but no tax on private sale so I could save hundreds that way. Is the warranty worth the few hundred bucks... since I can't find any evidence of the warranty being transferrable.

What are your thoughts?

The 300 WM has a very short barrel life, why would you pay almost new cost for a rifle with some of the life shot out of the barrel?

If you like the "style" of the 110BA but want a lighter and more versatile rifle and wouldnt mind doing something more incremental think about this:
Get one of XLR's chassis setup for an AICS mag, bolt your -06 into it, upgrade scope and 1000 yrds will be no problem. Shoot the crap out of it and when you wear out the barrel replace it with a 300wm barrel. If you want to shave some poundage off to carry it around hunting, put it back in the original or more conventional stock.
There are much more experienced guys around here who can probably give you better advice, but that is what I would do.
Then again I'm biased since i have a 300WM 700 in an XLR stock and love it

Nothing wrong with the -06. For the money, unless you just really like the space age look of the BA, I would get the 10FCP and drop it in a Manners stock or an XLR!!

I personally don't care for the BA all that much, and I am a DIEHARD Savage fan!! I would go Manners for a more traditional rifle (got one on order right now), or go with the modular.

Your dime... your time. Spend the funds on what YOU like.

I'm a super newbie when it comes to knowing anything about customizing a rifle. Maybe a bit of a point in the right directions. I'll tell you you what I'm looking for.

I love the tactical look. Most definitely want it in a stock that looks like a BA.
I'd also love to have a muzzle brake. Love the look and recoil reduction ability. It does hit hard enough and I'm a bony dude so prolonged shooting does wear on me a tad.
My budget is about 2K, about what I wanted to spend on the BA. I have a budget about 1K for glass and rings and I'm thinking a Bushnell Elite 6500 4x30x50. If I can do it a little cheaper thats great. More ammo for me

A bit about my 700. Frankly I don't know exactly what model or version it is. It's a stainless barrel. The stock is a hunting type composite stock with the mag integrated into it. Will my barrel and action still be fine for this type of thing? I paid about $1100 for it new. I only have about 200 rounds down this particular gun. Can't wait to have a bipod instead of just sitting it on my shooting bag.

This is the beauty of the Savage barrel nut, you can negotiate the price based on remaining barrel life and when the barrel is shot out you can upgrade to a custom pre-fit barrel that you can install yourself with a headspace gauge and barrel nut wrench.

This would be my preference, I really like the XLR chassis system. Keep in mind that to switch from 30-06 to 300WM you will also need to figure the cost of changing the boltface. Get the XLR and shoot the shit out of the 30-06 for less money and better barrel life then if you have to have the 300WM then get a new barrel and boltface.

I know all about changing the barrel, I've done it myself.
The point was that he was asking about paying the nearly same price for a new one versus a used one.

When you add in the 300 bucks for a new barrel, 65 bucks for th ego and no go gage, 35 for the barrel nut wrench and 50 for the barrel vise, (which you will probably end up with anyway) it makes it a less attractive option as the rebarrel is going to happen sooner than it would with a new rifle.

What distance are you going to be shooting 99% of the time?

To me it sounds like you just want to spend some money.. and there is nothing wrong with that. But I would recommend going to a .308 if you plan to shoot under 800yds most of the time. Or, since you have a nice 700 already, just order a McMillan or Manners Stock and drop it in and have at it? You can still get your "tactical look". I would say spend your money on a good optic like a Nightforce and skip the new gun. The 30/06 can out perform the .308 and almost meet the 300WM if handloaded.

Spend some money and get into reloading and upgrade what you have. Just my .02.

Thanks for the replies.

I will be shooting mostly out to 500 metres. That is the longest range closest to me. We have a 900 meter a few hours away and that will be the absolute max. I'm in Canada and we have some rather odd laws and strict range safety template rules.

I've ruled the used 110BA out. In fact, I'm crossing the 110BA off the list and dropping back to 308. That does put the 10BA in 308 as a contender but new.

I'm now considering an MDT Tac 21. Wicked looking chassis. Drop in my .06 guts and off I go.

Yes, I am looking to spend some money. A guy should treat himself once on a while

Spent some money on good glass and some training. Most rifles can hit 500 yards with the right shooter behind the rifle. Your Rem 700 in 30-06 is more than enough gun for 500 yards. Get a good scope and go from there.

You said you paid $1100 for you Remington, I wonder which model you got there. Because I paid $600 for my Remington 700 tactical and my rifle has not problem hitting steel at 600 yards.

After I made that post I did some more reading about that stock and noticed that myself. I just saw the pictures and went whoa, I want that. That being said, I'm prepared to buy an action and a 308 barrel.

I don't doubt my current rifle will do 500 with decent glass on it. I haven't tried it yet. I just don't like the look of it. It looks like any other hunting rifle out there. It's not bad to shoot but its really light and beats the crap out of me after a few dozen rounds. Its been great for hunting, I don't mind carrying it at all. I'm thinking should keep it and the cheap scope for hunting anyways. That way if I trip and break it I won't cry.

I'm pretty sure I bought the gun, with the scope and rings as a package for $1100 and I am pretty sure that was taxes in. We have a 15% sales tax here. Who knows, maybe the dealer boned me on the price. I found out after the fact he boned me on a different gun and I don't shop there anymore. That's why I'm here asking questions now, so I can avoid getting boned again, or buying the wrong tool for the job. I don't mind spending money but I hate getting ripped off.

I honestly believe you will walk away with a better, more capable rifle modifying your current platform instead of buying a replacement. 30-06 is a very capable round. You can make it "look" however you like as well with these modifications. All a rifle is;action, barrel, stock(with BM), glass and trigger. if you have 2k to spend you can drop it directly into a manners or used McM stock, buy some quality glass and have a smith spit shine it (bed, tune trigger)and you will have a very capable rifle. later you can slap a new barrel and re-chamber it to whatever caliber the bolt face will accept.(possibly .260 if your recoil sensitive?) By that time, you will have enough experience to better know what you want/need. Nothing like blowing all of you cash on some new cool thing and then realizing that its not what you really need, and at that moment you feel like you ripped yourself off.

I have nothing whatsoever against Savage, but you already have money invested in a very workable unit. If the tables were reversed and you already owned Savage and wanted a Rem, I would have recommended moding the Savage.

also, If your max range is 900m, 30-06 is a great round, with FGMM prices close to .308 costs. A 300WM is not needed, and if your a bony guy like you say, it will just beat you up even more.

To be honest I personally know zero long range people here. I'm on the east coast of Canada. I pistol shoot mostly, but I've started a nice collection of various other toys and take turns shooting them on rotation LOL.

No.. you aren't a dummy.. you are smart for coming to a place with lots of knowledge.. real knowledge. Now, it is up to you whether you want to take it or not. Again, if the 30/06 is not beating you up, you have an excellent platform to start with. I bet in stock form, a good driver could do quite well with it. So go spend your money on ammo and glass. Shoot and spend lots of time in the "Marksmanship" section and less time in the "Gear" sections. Good glass, ammo,training, maybe a trigger and stock down the line.. that is the path I would follow. Sometimes less is more.

I'd keep and tweek out the 06 with good glass, stock, and barrel, but that's just me, I'm a just a little biased to the 06. With handloads the 30-06 perform good 500 yards won't be a problem.

After reading this I'm thinking that drtfarmer's 30-06 is a hunting style pencil barreled rifle. The money it will take to modify it will bust the budget. The 06 is a hard rifle to train on because it punishes you alot, that is why I suggest a .308, lots of ammo to select from and a ton of barrel life.
I suggest you buy a barreled action, used from the Hide in 308 then buy the chassis system to get the tacticool look you are after.
Either sell the 06 and help fund this project or keep it as your long range hunter.

You describe my barrel perfectly. Tapered like a pencil. Not a match grade barrel by any means.

That being said, I've taken a lot of what has been said here to heart. At this point, what is the more sensible route to take? My options are:

Get good glass and shoot with what I have.

Get a match grade barrel with a muzzle brake in 30.06 and drop it in a tacticool stock.

Buy something in 308 and start from scratch. There is the option of the Savage 10BA which does come in 308 and is less expensive than the 110BA, both in purchase price and to shoot.

I understand I will still have to get a good scope with the last two options. I'm thinking a Bushnell 6500 4.5x30.50 which will add $900 to whatever option I go with.

Again, I don't mind spending the money. It is almost worth it to have 2 rifles to shoot with, one for the woods and one for the range. If it costs as much or even close to modify what I have I am better off buying the second rifle.

Is there another rifle similar in looks and performance to the 10BA that costs less? Again, I am a big fan of the tacticool look.

If you want "tacticool" on a budget with room to grow, I'd definitely do a Rem or Savage 308 with an XLR chassis.

I have a few questions for the OP, why do you need a 300wsm or 338? Do you have thousands of yards of open land? I live on the eastern seaboard also and I have never got to shoot more than 600 yards. I have a remington 700p .308 in a mcmillan A4. I have around 1700 in it. And my reloads cost me about 36 cents a shot. I probably will never need a larger caliber. I dont see the need for a magnum cartridge like that unless you plan on shooting 1500+ or plan on shooting elk at 800 yards. .308s are everywhere because they are versatile, cheap, easy to reload, and easy on the shoulder.

I bought a Savage 10FCP last week and am waiting on rings and 20 MOA base to arrive. It was $699 and I like the looks of it so far. I have rifles that cost 3x's more, but I wanted a rifle with a detachable box mag and this one filled the bill.

It has the Accutrigger and Accustock. The trigger is nice as it came from the factory. I am not going to take it out of the stock to adjust it because I want my first range session to be with the rifle as it came from the factory. The Accustock seems to be a step in the right direction. It is rigid without the forend flex that plagued the older lowend rifles Savage offered for the tactiacl/police market. If I take my hand and exert a great deal of pressure on the stock at the very tip of the forend, I can make it touch the barrel. But when I move back to the sling studs I cannot.

I hope my rings and base will be here by Tuesday or Wednesday. If they are I will wring it out at the range Thursday morning and post a report with pictures.

This might a route for you to consider.

You can get the 10FCP, but I would sell the HS stock personally. I just don't care for the thing. I would snag that rifle, sell off the stock, and drop it in a Manners if it was mine to do so with. Or again, you can drop it in a chassis.

With the 10FCP, you will have an easy option of going to a detachable magazine rifle without breaking the bank as well. I know you said that spending the money is not a problem. I wish that I had that kind of problem. But seriously, spend the funds where they will do you the most good. Spend it sensibly.

Unless something major has changed, I doubt it. AICS specifically held off making a stock for the Savage action due to the changes that were constantly being made in dimensions. It just wasn't worth their R&D to try and keep up with the changes and put it into production.

I have however, seen a couple of people make the internal part of the stock that holds the action, and then place the AICS skins on them. It looks like an AICS, but it's not.

It seems you are correct and I stuffed my foot in my mouth before I did my research. I just got off the phone with the Canadian distributor and they said it is a popular rumour but just that, a rumour. O well. There are tons of other good stocks out there.

Thanks for that link. Finally thinning the herd on choices. Too much to choose from makes me freeze up a little. Hard to make decision. It's also complicated by the lack of local options so I can't get a chance to try something to see if I am comfortable with it.

Honestly, if I had the action and the money to fund it, I would send that Remmy action to a good smith and have it worked over then put in a good stock.

There are good options out there for a long action.

A 6.5x55 will do everything the 300 will do to paper at equal and possibly greater ranges, with less recoil and much friendlier to barrels. (you'll need to start handloading)

Of course the good old '06 is no slouch either. i do not agree that factory match ammo is near the same price as that of the .308 though. FGMM in .308 can be found for 20 a box, other match ammo can be found for 15 to 17 a box. You are not touching those prices in '06 or .300 WM for that matter.

I've handled the Accustock on the BAS and it is nice (although I don't like all the rails). I had the FCP-K and finally decided that I needed a better stock and I found the XLR Stock which I personally think is a pretty nice stock. I suspect that functionally, they are pretty much equal. If I was buying a whole complete new set up I think the BAS would be a good place to start.

I'm certainly pondering a .338 BAS in the future but not totally sold on it.

Im not sure if thats a great deal. My brother picked one up with 10rds thru her for $2000. It came with 50rds Lapua ammo, RCBS dies,200 sierra 250gn MK bullets, Bipod, Bushnell Elite 4200 8-32x40, and pelican carry case.
