WAY off base (COS CO)
I took my SPR to the range yesterday and was using near Mk 262 clone ammo (2750 FPS not 2800). With a USO ST-10 as a Type III optic it rang steel out to 600 yards with boring predictability, even small things like rabbits and crows. I was able to connect with the 1017 yard plate as well, though my thrown charges were showing up in elevation variances. Being transonic at 1201 fps did not help either.

On the same range I have occasion to shoot a McMillan repeater with AMAX 750s running about 2750 at the muzzle. It carries a 400 yard zero and is only fired at the 12"x14" 1017 yard plate, nothing closer. The 1040 yard 12" circle gets a few hits too.

Anyway, I was having a bit of trouble confirming hits with the Mk 262 ammo, other than there was no splash in the dirt and the quietest of "dings" coming back to the electronic muffs turned all the way up. Getting indication of hit is no problem with the 50, and at dusk the bullet striking the plate puts of sparks. So, when I got home I looked up the energy on target between the two loads as it is not on my range card:

Mk 262 energy at 1025 yds - 263 ft/lbs

AMAX 750 energy at 1025 yards - 7,213 ft/lbs

Gee, no wonder

Love this setup though:

9H,
That is a fun comparison!Any wind to deal with?

I've been playing around with my SPR also.Surprising what can be done...except when the wind comes up.

One more reason why I am not a fan of the .223 (5.56) round for combat use. It's not much good up close, far away, or in between either.

Cool info though 9H, thanks for sharing it with us. And good job stretching that .223 all the way out there.

Thanks for the interest in the topic.

Mount is a USO slide lock. Honestly it is OK but has a few issues. One, you have to slide it on from the rear after pulling the charging handle back and leaving it back. Two, it is a tad low. Three, it is not the lowest profile mount out there the way the rings go together on the left side. BUT, it does return to zero and is a good solid mount.

Wind - that is a good one. Last time I shot the 50 side-by-side with the 308 shooting 155 smk 2155 bullets. Wind with the 308 was about 1 1/2 mils. With the 50, I held half a mil and banged the plate every time. Think about what that does to your shot hit percentage at 1k-1300 yards.

It is important to note that the 50 with M2 delinked type ammo and projectiles - M33, AP, API, APIT, T - does not perform like the way a machined solid or AMAX does. Those bullets are in the .650 range for BC whereas the AMAX and solids are .920 and up. Go play with JBM and make charts using both classes of projectiles. While the 50 is somewhat impressive with M2 type ammo, it really steps out there with the good ammo.

H4895 is a fine powder for the 77 SMK in a 223 case launched out of an AR.

Scott, I am a cheap ass and am shooting WC846 from Pat's. so far so good with it but I am no bench rester.

On the 262 clone, I am told they (.mil) use a powder not available to us, so our civie velocity is going to be a tad slower if we maintain reasonable pressures.

Re: Interesting comparision - SPR vs. AMAX 50 BMG

Can't imagine shooting the $2 plus a piece Amax with surplus powder. I have been using H50BMG with the Amax and even my pulled and sized projo's from HiTech. They have proven to be very accurate. 1 moa with 225 grain of the H50BMG. Kind of fun to think at 1,000 yards that it hits harder (more energy) than twice the muzzle energy of a .300 win mag. Amax just slide right through 1 inch cold rolled (non AR) plate at 200 yards. There is no question about a hit or not.
