Thanks for the read! I wondered why the 700 was chosen as the standard platform over the 70, when guys like Hathcock chose Winchester 70s.

When Remington introduced the M721/722/700, they were not trying to make a better rifle - they were trying to make a cheaper rifle.

The M70, pre or post, is a drop forged receiver. Go to LRB's site for info on that process with pics. Conversely, the M700 is cut from a piece of extruded steel 4140 Shelby pipe. Then look at the machined parts that make up the fire control mechanism of the M70, versus the sheet metal (with a few hardened parts) that make up the 721/722/700.

There are many elements of the M700's design that contribute to accuracy, that is true, (hence the high quality clones) but Remington's overall execution of the design, especially of late, leaves a lot to be desired compared to a pre, post, or FN M70.
