I have no idea where to post this or if anyone will even find it useful but I know it burned my ass until I found a fix so here it is.

I got the 4S as soon as they were released. I had the 3, 3g, 3gs, then the 4s. I never had a problem with any of the "3's". As soon as I got the 4S i noticed that if I held the phone with my shoulder I would put the call on hold, mute or end the call with my cheek. I never had this problem with the previous design but I guess the location of the proximity switches had something to do do with this.

I set out to find a way to get around this. I googled the hell out of it and found other people having the same problem but no "fix". At first the only thing I came up with was to put the phone on speaker then lock it with the lock button on top. When on speaker the lock button would lock it and that worked but didn't always want to use speaker. (if not on speaker it ended the call)

Here is my discovery that fixed all my problems................while on the call swipe down the notification screen and leave it down during the call. This hides all other buttons

I'm pretty sure the iphone has an IR sensor so when your face is against the device the touch screen is disabled. Are you using some kind of case that is blocking the IR sensor?

They do have sensors but I think with them being thinner it doesn't get ckose enough to activate them and shut off the screen.

And yes I prefer to text over talk but some things ya just gota

the otterbox does help, but the notification menu is a neat trick. I honestly hate that friggin menu though, can it be turned off? It always swipes down when I'm trying to go back to the top of a page in safari.

The phone uses a proximity sensor to deactivate the screen when it is held up to your face. It sounds like the sensor is not working.

ROFL I have two of the 4S's and neither one does as you are describing.... Both of them will damn sure hang me up sometimes in the middle of a conversation... Also while on Skype if the phone does something Skype turns completely off. Something as in Alarm, timer, call, farts, etc....

Yes my switches are working. If i cover them with my thumb the screen goes off. The problem happens mostly when I'm holding the phone wityh my shoulder to free up my hands. I assume the top of the phone lifts and lets light in.

Google iphone and proximity sensor, there are numerous articles about the issue. Some say a hard reset of the phone will fix it. I had the same problem with an older one and could never fix it. My new phone the 4s does not do this. It may be worth a try to trouble shoot.

If you are holding it with your shoulder that is probably the issue. Sounds like you found a good work around with the swipe down. Technology supposedly makes our lives easier, I find it to be a pain in the ass sometimes.

This is brilliant. My Iphone 4 consistently mutes, or goes on speaker when i don't want it to. It also tries to three way call people in the middle of my conversations. Thanks for the free fix.

If you lock it during the call it hangs up (unless you are on speaker phone)
