is a .22 ethical for small coyotes?

Re: is a .22 ethical for small coyotes?

The airport I fly out of has a pretty decent size pack of coyotes on it; its nothing to see them out and about in the middle of the day. Our other pilot had to go around because one was sunning itself on the runway last winter and couldn't be bothered to move out of the way of the landing airplane. Early last fall I landed at dusk and the sound of them howling was spooky.

Last week, three of them were cruising between the runway and taxiway while we were taxiing out to leave.

About a year and a half ago, one walked well into the ramp and got within 15 yards of our airplane and, more importantly to me, my passengers. It was a juvenile and wasn't threatening or menacing in any way, just seemed curious what we were doing.

Not sure if the risk from coyotes is any better than the risk we face from deer on the runway...both need to be culled in the WORST way.

This may be a "double edged sword" but I would contact the local game warden for advice. If he's a down to earth fellow you can call him before the hunt and inform him of your intentions. When he gets the call about shots fired, he'll know what's going on and won't be alarmed. We contact our local warden regularly before night hunts and he welcomes the info. A coyote problem like you describe needs to be handled...hope you get those vermin under control.

Seen any planes that have hit a deer? I would gladly run over a coyote that is wheel height than take a deer that is engine height. A plane hit a deer at the local airport last year and it destroyed the radar pod on the bottom of the plane. Plenty of fur stuck in the seams it opened up in the wing too.

Yes, I have...including a Jetstream 32, King Air 200 and a Lear 60.

Given a choice I'd much rather hit a song dog than a whitetail in our $6M+ business jet, but either are going to result in a bad day for us (and our insurance underwriter).

Baited offshore treble hooks tethered to a tree branch do wonders on the flea-bitten bastards. Not a good idea if you have any neighbors with pets though.

As for ethics.... When they steal thousands of dollars out of your pocket dining on livestock, your moral compass gets an adjustment. A living 'yote is unethical in my opinion.

RWS Subs work fine. This one was a lucky shot trotting at about 80 yards, swung thru let a round go. DRT.

Shot 3 last year in the same field, they come up to the neighborhood and feast on dogs and cats....

I really think that it is, especially within a reasonable range (whatever it is that you can solidly hit one). I have an aunt who used the .22 rifle that was kept behind the kitchen door to shoot a German Shepherd that was chasing a new foal in the corral by her barn. It ran away.

Uncle found it piled up in the driveway by the highway. GSD was a lot bigger than any 'yote I've seen.

Ethical shoot, for sure. 'yotes fall in the same category for me.
