Is an Atlas worth the jump from Harris, etc?

My 700 is in desperate need of a new bipod and I've been weighing out my options. In a perfect world I would have an Atlas but the cost with an AICS spigot is pushing $300 as well as a lengthy wait as no one seems to have them in stock.

The other option is a Harris which is cheaper, easier to find, but still very reputable.

Is it worth the money and the wait for the Atlas? Any other good companies besides Harris out there?

Atlas is a luxury, the harris will serve the same purpose. With that said I love my Atlas!

Dont buy one, but if you end up tasting the atlas goodness you will honestly end up buying one for every rifle you own.

Yes and no.

If I were looking to buy a new bipod, I would look at an Atlas. I wouldn't buy one just as an upgrade option if I had a functioning Harris.

Its insulting to think to put Atlas in the same category as Harris. The Harris works but the Atlas just does everything better. Worth the money and worth the wait.

The Atlas is great and Kasey has been really great about taking care of customers etc and it has some features the harris does not. It's tough to go back to the Harris once you've used an Atlas.

That said the Harris is a great bipod for the price, with a podloc and considering what you can usually get a very good condition one for used it's really a great functional bipod.

If money is tight find a used harris, and use it until you can afford a Atlas, you'll get your money out of the harris and have a perfectly functional bipod in the meantime.

Run a small bead of silicone where the spigot touch the stock. Let it dry good then snap it in and your GTG.

Another +1 for the Atlas. I was really hesitant to spend the dough to switch from the Harris to the Atlas V-8 with AI Spigot. Money well spent...Have not thought twice about what I spent on it yet..

I bought mine from Lisa @ Rifles Only. Very helpful and shipping was faster than hell.

I'm not trying to put Harris on the same tier as the Atlas, those just seem to be the two most popular products in that market segment. I'm starting my 700 build fresh after I took the cheap route a couple times and it ended up biting me in the ass. I told myself that this time around I'm going to do it right.

The way I'm looking at it, though, is $300 can also buy me a new trigger + some other goodies or a SPUHR mount for my optic or even some custom action work from GAP, so it's hard to justify that same cost for a bipod.

If it's worth every penny, then I will certainly go with the Atlas. It just hurts to think how much other stuff that money could buy me as well. I guess all in due time, right?

Also, should have mentioned in my OP. What feet do you guys run on your Atlas? I normally shoot in the grass but my cheap Winchester bipod doesn't like to stay in place when I load it. It slides forward just enough to move my NPA and it gets rather annoying to have to reset after each shot.

A Harris BRMS 6-9 with Pod-lock is all you need but the Atlas is simply a better product, I run the rubber feet that come with it, and see no need yet for the others, I did a how to install a BT17 rail on a A5 stock should you need to put a rail on, that thread is in the Gunsmithing Section.

Not to start a flame war, but I doubt you'll ever break the Atlas. It's a solid piece of gear.

You will notice a bigger improvement in your shooting with an Atlas than anything else you listed. You cant imagine how good it is until you have one, kind of like sex

Ill go against the grain! I had an atlas which I loved but had a hard time adjusting the length of the legs on the fly. The harris has the push button with a spring that pushes the legs out which is much easier for me to use. The slop was not a big deal with the Atlas. Beside looks, I think the Harris does its purpose just as good as the Atlas for a lot cheaper. Both are great. If you want to save a few bills go with a Harris if you have money to burn go with an Atlas. Also with the money you save you could get a set of claws for the harris.

I have that figured out. I worked with Kasey on an upgrade that may be available in the future. That is the best thing about the Atlas...Kasey. He designed an awesome product and listens to users and makes changes from their input.

It truely is another level of performance...no more Harris.

I'm still getting used to my Atlas. Just arrived 2wks ago. Shot a match with it for the first time last weekend. I didnt get a couple shots of cause I was messin with the legs on the fly, but by no means is that a deal breaker. Just something I need to get used to. Also seems a bit higher than a 6-9 Harris.

I really love the versatility, and the quick mount is awesome. I also like the fact that for positional shooting, I can take the pod off pretty quick to take some weight off the forend of the rifle.

It definately outshines the Harris when shooting on concrete. Seems like it naturally want to bite a lil more due to way it is designed. You definatly can load it up. AND keep it loaded while panning, if you're shooting a mover.

This thing is built like a brick shithouse. Very well made.

I would say if you have the means to do so, you usually get what you pay for.. I recently got an Atlas and am very impressed with what it can do compared to the Harris. I also have several Harris which have served me well over the years. But as mentioned above, if you are happy with your Harris, no need to fix what isn't broken.

I guess its like buying a car. If you have the money you will buy a Luxary car. If not then a economy car is good enough. It might not be fully loaded but it gets you from point A to point B.

Very well put. I guess if it means holding off for a little longer until I can comfortably afford a significantly better product, then so be it.

This thread actually surprised me. I knew the Atlas was good, but I've seen so many builds on this site (high end builds included) that are sitting on a Harris.

Looks like I might just have to cry once over this one. I keep telling myself one step at a time.

A swivel harris BRM is about $110 and an Atlas is functionally way more than just 2x the harris so to me its a good deal.

I would not trade 3 harris for one of my Atlas bipods.

Ok in reading this I am intrigued. I have a Rem 700 with the Harris swivel mounts (two on the bottom front). I dont want to do major surgery on my stock. Can I add a Pictinney rail in the exsisting holes? or what other mounting options do I have? Or am I a Harris Bi-poder for life?

If you are currently using a stock trigger, you should change that first, because that WILL improve your accuracy. If you are on a tight budget, you could use the Harris for the mean time, then sell it here for a very small loss when you are ready to step up.

And since this probably isnt nor will it be the only rifle you own, you can always pass the Harris down to the next one in line when you can afford the atlas. When it comes down to it its almost the same as picking optics. Sure a Hensoldt is super duper badass, but a Falcon that tracks and you can see through does the same exact job.

I'm surprised it took this long for responses like these to surface. On the inside I know I would greatly benefit from a new trigger and it's probably the smart way to go but it's just not the "glam pick." It's like drafting an offensive lineman in the first round. Not flashy, but something you really should do that is almost guaranteed to yield great results.

I'm still leaning towards an Atlas as I'd rather get the bigger investment out of the way (not to mention how nice it works, looks, etc) but if I do then I feel like a trigger has to be the next upgrade.

When I go that route, I'd prefer to stay away from the Jewell (blasphemy!) only because I don't want to mill out my AICS to fit it. Are there any drop in replacements that won't require the services of a smith or modifications to the chassis? Any companies offer a pre-set trigger from the factory?

I'm surprised it took this long for responses like these to surface. On the inside I know I would greatly benefit from a new trigger and it's probably the smart way to go but it's just not the "glam pick." It's like drafting an offensive lineman in the first round. Either way it is no big deal.

After owning an Atlas, I will now endevour to not purchase any other bipod except an Atlas for any future rifles... unless something as equally nice comes out and tickles my fancy

I tried one after hearing all the great things about them and seeing that they were in stock somewhere. I had never actually seen a list of features that they offer in comparison with a Harris, so I was completely suprised with how much more useful it was. Effortless pan, cant, and it seems to preload very well. I will also only be using the Atlas from here on out unless something better comes along.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the Harris bipods if your budget limits you to $110 or so for a good, swivel unit with a pod-loc (or if you are issued one). BUT...with that said, the Atlas bipods are simply leaps and bounds above the Harris in every single respect and for me, and apparently many others, it is worth the additional investment.

The problem is...they are like Lays potato chips: Betcha can't have just one!!! They get expensive quickly which is why I have two and am running lever mounts on them so that they can be easily moved around as necessary, without tools, and in a matter of just a few seconds.

I agree. Started out with one, to replace a Versa Pod on a Les Baer custom AR. Now have three, one on my wife's M4, another a big bolt gun, the third on a .308 Monolith. I particularly like the versatility of the leg positions: lets you get nice and low if you need to be. Also NO WOBBLE when panning, etc.

Try one; you'll like it. Well worth the price

There are several manufacturers that provide a picatinny rail that mounts on existing swivel studs..

Here is a mount from Blackhawk that will provide the interface:

To the OP, I upgraded from a GG&G bipod and while it's a great bipod, it's no Atlas. I wouldn't trade my Atlas for anything. I'm using the standard feet as I shoot from a bench or from a mat and that's all I need for now.

Bottom line; get it, you won't regret it.

Pretty much how I feel about it.

I run a Harris BRM-S on two rifles. My AI has the Atlas V8 with spigot. There are things I like and don't like about both.

I feel the Harris is much quicker to deploy. The Atlas is more streamlined and better constructed.

I'm with ya on this one.

I tried and Atlas and wasn't crazy about it. Mind you, it was a pre V8 (and Kasey's response to some of what I didn't like actually was part of the V8 so I will say that as a manufacturer their CS is great and they have their ear to the ground with regards to what we want and what we think).
I wouldn't mind trying a V8, but it's gonna be a while at the price point they are at. I can see how the Atlas is a good design, and now that they don't loosen upon panning, or fold under firing when deployed at 45* forward they are probably a good piece of kit.


I just can't get over some of the comments, like "an Atlas will improve the shooting of a factory 700 more than an improved trigger will"......c'mon, that's just a little heavy on the koolaid.

Let the flames begin (LOL). Although outnumbered about 1000 to 1, I have to say I much prefer the Harris. I bought two of the Atlas V8s about 6 months ago and have used them extensively on a Sig 556 DMR and more recently, a DTA SRS Covert .308, to try and see what might work the best. One is the QD mount, the other is the direct rail mounted version. Frankly, I just haven't been able to get as comfortable with the Atlas. I agree 100% that they are a much more versatile bipods than my Harris BRMs. Also as mentioned, Kasey was great to deal with.

However, I think a lot of it depends on how you're going to use it. I am shooting prone on a gravel bed at targets and steel out to 600 yd. Some of the features of the Atlas that set it apart from the Harris really haven't come into play for that kind of shooting. I find the Harris to be absolutely rock solid; it just doesn't move or wiggle, whereas the Atlas definitely has some play to it. So for the simple sort of shooting I do, the Harris does the job and I just feel more comfortable behind it. YMMV.

I have a Harris BRMS with pod claws and pod loc, its an excellent product and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone. But in saying that I have an Atlas V8 and its absolutely superb on my 18 inch AR, durability, functionality, it has it all.
